Darwin's first big clue while in the Galápagos Islands were actually the difference between the 4 mockingbirds that he p icked up from four different Islands. He did not look at the finches in detail until after arriving back in England and a colleague pointed out that they were different species. He had put all the finches in one box. Not even labeling which island they had come from. This is a common misconception about the finches who were named after Darwin later and his first real big clue, which were the Mockingbirds of Galapagos.
