My first time listening to this song but my take is. He has died and they used to be together. Guessing she left and broke his heart. She looks good in black is a double meaning. He still loves her and is attracted to her is one. With her mourning and showing her emotion she shows she actually did care for him.

Yet another great reaction Don. One of the most under appreciated singers. I think it was a funeral. His family were mad at her because they split up right before he died. When Darryl first came out when I first heard him on the song I let her lie I thought it was Keith Whitley

his voice ranks right up there with the elite of country greats. just think what he could have done if fate didn't take him so young. never got the radio fame and sales he deserved

I first heard this song on XM radio back in early 2000’s when it was first recorded and has been one of my favorites since. I’ve always considered it “He stopped loving her today part 2. I know some will say the album didn’t come out till 2009 but it had been recorded way before that and put on hold due to record label issues. XM was playing a promotional copy which fortunately I was able to record a copy from.

Beautiful song...and that voice...right up there with George Jones, Merle, and Vern Gosden! This was off his album "Rockin' in the Country"...catchy title that reminds me of my favorite KZbin channel. :-) There's still an on-going controversy as to who is preaching and singing at the beginning of the song. Some say it's the beloved Dr. Ralph Stanley, but I found an article that states the preaching was Christian music artist Gordon Mote and the portion of Amazing Grace was sung by Glen Duncan.

@David Emswiler Not that you necessarily need any more work, but you’re gonna have to write several books, the first topic (I’m volunteering you for it) is country music. Not only for the public’s benefit, but what you’ll discover about your full perspective along the way will be astounding. Just sayin’. :-)

If Amazing Grace was not being sung by Ralph Stanley I must commend Glen Duncan because he certainly sounded like Dr. Stanley. He sure fooled me!

This is the first time I've heard this song also and it sort of has me puzzled too but I don't think the funeral was a metaphor, I think it was a funeral. My take on this is that this song is from the point of view of the dead man because it said, "all my friends are gathered round" and later "tears rolled down her face onto the finest suit I've ever worn" which makes me think he is in his coffin, and she is hanging over him crying onto his suit. I think his mother hates her and his daddy blames her because I think she split up with him and he committed suicide because he didn't want to live without her. She left him and now she's there crying over his body and "my sister swears it's all an act." I think he died very young and that's why "the whole town turned out." I think his love for her is still strong and that's why when he sees her all he can think is that she looks so good in black. I could have it all wrong but that's the way I see it. I LOVED the beginning where he "preached" the service for the funeral. I was raised in the mountains of east Tennessee, and I have heard old-time preachers who sounded EXACTLY like he sounded, right down to those aahs (or however the heck they're spelled) he threw in there. Those old-time preachers liberally sprinkled their sermons with those sounds, and I could almost picture myself back there as a child listening as one of them was speaking. What a unique and special and realistic beginning. And I loved hearing Ralph Stanley singing "Amazing Grace". This part was very true to life also. Many churches were too poor to own a piano and even if they owned one, no one in the congregation could play it so much of the singing back in the day was acapella. And what a great voice Daryle had. What a shame he died so young. EDIT: Someone said it was not Ralph Stanley but someone else singing Amazing Grace. I stand corrected. I will say that whoever it was he sure sounded like Rev. Stanley. BTW, this would not be the first time a country song was written from the point of view of a dead man. In "Long Black Veil" the song says, "she visits my grave, when the night winds wail" and "sometimes at night when the cold wind moans, in a long black veil she cries o'er my bones". I think Long Black Veil by Lefty Frizzell and She Sure Looks Good in Black by Daryle Singletary were both written from the point of view of a dead man.

I think that he loved her and he thought she looked beautiful in black so he was imagining what she would look like at his Funeral. Even though they were no longer together, he liked to think that she would be there. LOL That is just my take on it. I loved Daryle Singletary's voice, and he was such a nice guy. I live in a small town in Georgia and a year or two before he died, he came to my small town and played on stage at our little annual Fair. It was wonderful. Everybody in our little County turned out to see him on stage.

What I got out of it was even though it was his funeral, and she is/was absolutely amazing in red, he'd even take black because she looked that good. He loved her that much he'd take even his funeral for one more glimpse. He hoped she was coming back... but he'd died, apparently from suicide if his father blamed her or maybe drinking. I've been listening to country music for all my life, I'm 47, that was a hard one for me to wrap my head around as well. LOVE Daryle which is what brought me here, however, I wish they would have been more blunt on this one. It left a lot of room for different meanings.

It's just simple. She left him. He died from a broken heart.......all that might go with it. Just lost the will to live. The women blame her for breaking his heart. Leaving him. It's his family. The women. He's dead. He's singing. Telling the story. His funeral. .........by the way, that woman sure looked good in black, at the funeral.

What a master craftsman and a singer of real country music. The preacher at the beginning of the song reminds me of churches I went to as a young boy. I think this song is about an imaginary funeral for their love affair, which is obviously ended. I’m just proud to know Daryl was from my home state, Georgia. And yes, I expect to loose to Alabama tomorrow night. That just hurts!😂🤠

@@RockN2Country that’s all well and good, but you gotta beat Alabama on the field. It’s time Georgia started looking at Alabama as the bully on the block. Album review that I copied and pasted. The most unusual track, and one which seems to be made for a video, is ‘She Sure Looks Good In Black’, written by Dale Dodson and Billy Lawson. This opens with an old country preacher (played by Christian music artist and Nashville session musician Gordon Mote) speaking at what turns out to be the funeral of the narrator, and telling us that the lady in the front row broke up with the deceased just a few weeks earlier; then we get a couple of lines from ‘Amazing Grace’ sung acapella in the voice of an elderly choir member (performed by Glen Duncan), before Daryle starts singing in the persona of the corpse. This may be my favorite track, as Daryle’s classic country voice tells us to a suitably mournful tune (with Rhonda Vincent on harmonies), “My mama hates her, my daddy blames her, My sister swears it’s all an act But if she had wore [sic] red She could have raised the dead But my Lord, that woman sure looks good in black”

This song is wrote in the perspective of him looking down on his own funeral she had left him and he never got over her whether he drank himself to death or just never got over the heartbreak whatever the case may be. His momma hates her and dad blames her for killing their son is how they see it and his sister thinks the crying over him is just a act for sympathy

What he is saying in the song is she was one of those beautiful women that had well let's say kind of a black gold heart even though he's not saying she has a black heart she's just one of those beautiful women that has ulterior motives and could probably get him to do anything she wanted kind of used him probably drove him to his death somehow so yes they are saying she is a beautiful woman that looks good in Black but the rest of the song is pretty much about how she's a shitty person that got their son to do whatever she wanted him to do probably cheated on him multiple times and then got him to take her back every time cuz she's beautiful so in a way that's how I interpret the song it doesn't say in the song but I'm sure she had glorious tits LOL

I love this song . 1 - they shouldn’t have put the preacher in at the 1st. It take away from the song. To over the top. 2 - the guy broke up yrs ago with this woman and never rebounded. The family could see him go down hill from there on. Like myself. Then when he dies from what ever. Liver I suspect? She showed up at funeral and the dead guy described what he sees and feels STILL!!!! Yes.In his eyes she’s still hot. And if she wore red he would probably have come back to life.I laughed so hard at your reaction.Priceless .Thanks for this one.
