The idea it had to be 'proven false' is ridiculous. Humans have been awful, violent things since the dawn of time. There were decades of violent books movies, TV shows and plays preceding games. I once was involved in a production of Treasure Island, and on stage we had two fake rocks, one made of paper mache that looked quite good, and one a painted cardboard cutout taped to a chair. During one scene the lead character was meant to stand on a rock to look further to the horizon, and the intent was for them to stand on the chair rock, since you know, there was a chair to stand on, but the first time the rocks were actually on stage was dress rehearsal and the actor, not entirely aware of which rock she was supposed to stand on, stepped on the wrong rock and fell right through, after which she muttered "they just don't make rocks like they used to" and went over to the correct fake rock and continued the scene. I've also witnessed instances of zippers not opening, telephones falling to pieces, and plenty of missed cues by actors entering and techies cuing sounds... Not that I do a lot of stage acting these days, and I've usually had minor roles when I did, but I've been fortunate to avoid being personally victimized by many stage glitches.

Similar story! I first played it on a very weak laptop and i often experienced lags and stutters and crashes, though eventually it started running consistently but only at like 15-20 fps (I legit beat the game multiple times at that fps I have no idea how younger me was so patient). The laptop was even tended to bluescreen from time to time Then when this "crash" happened I freaked the fuck out. I knew for sure the laptop was dead and over and over I just pressed the power button as soon as that happened and let it cool off and tried again. The game even crashed a few times and gave an error message on that part. Then eventually I decided to stick it out one time and my mind was absolutely blown away at the fact that this was intended. I had no idea games could do that.

The concept of "play" seems to be a pretty common attribute in mammals, but I think in humans and perhaps a few select animals we include Stories in there which may give us a unique perspective with the "Play frame" specifically. It makes me wonder how much we should allow the play frame to take up our mental space, whether holding to too often causes issues, and whether or not that applies to standard online interactions outside of obvious "play" in positive or negative ways (in some ways it may have to do with what we see as effects in anonymity). Intentional glitches are my favorite kind of comedy, that's why I love the classic Looney tunes because you expect one thing to happen and somehow they bend the rules of universe to do something absolutely out of place, like moving Daffy's peak arong his head, moving the front of a rifle so it shoots in a different direction, taking off infinite signs from a tree to decide who is going to be murdered, wearing tons of different costumes so you can confuse someone, shape shifting and transforming into God (big chungus origin), etc. Because none of those things not only don't make sense, but somehow manage to give it sense, it isn't simply "I'm gonna hunt this duck" and finish in an Italian restaurant solving a crime as a detective, it's not funny unless you manga to give it a direction for why it ended like that.

CrossCode, as a game that takes place within another, fictional, game, can really play with glitches while _adding_ to the immersion rather than breaking it... to an extent. One quest added after release is entirely focused on breaking the inner game and requires that you phase through a solid wall while doing it. Partway through, the partner guiding you skips a large puzzle room that you just did using a technique that was originally unintentional called a Jump-Attack-Dash Cancel (JADC), which effectively acts as a long jump. The technique was unintended by the developers, but this quest basically acts as a tutorial for one of the first glitches used in the speedrun. There are also several points in the main story where the game yanks your immersion out of the inner game while still maintaining immersion in the outer game.

i think its worth mentioning that some rare glitches can actually INCREASE your immersion. especially the kind of immersion that comes from control (the best kind of immersion if you ask me) like for example, the mockball glitch in super metroid. its clearly a glitch, but it plays perfectly into both A: the game's main gameplay loops of exploration and technical mastery, and B: the fantasy that the game is trying to convey of being alone on an indifferent planet with nothing but your skill and resourcefulness to keep you alive. you ARE abusing the game's mechanics, but in the same way sharpening a stick into a weapon is abusing real life's mechanics. plus, the mockball just makes physical sense. if you throw a bowling ball harder it rolls faster. its congruent with the rest of the game. (at least to me, maybe the mockball totally RUINS somebody else's immersion idk)

If you're in New York and you stay up until midnight, you might still be getting LA kids before bedtime if your game doesn't match by proximity. With all due respect to the channel and all wrestling fans... what the *fuck* was that barbed-wire-electricity-and-explosives match? Am I the only one who was... actually seriously concerned about the well-being of these wrestlers? Like, what the fuck, that looks like it was HORRENDOUSLY painful, or potentially deadly. This was all a performance, right? No risk of a real injury, right? These people are all right, right? Please someone assure me this was all under control and these people are okay. I understand suspense, acting, and high stakes, and I understand that wrestling is a performance rather than a real thing... but maybe I'm too weak for this type of things with real people involved. This just looked really stupidly and unnecessarily violent and risky to me. Like, accidents happen, even in performances, and I *really* want to believe that this wasn't real. Please someone explain to me if/how they made it safe for the wrestlers Edit: Fckin played myself... He literally explained it in the video a few minutes later... looks like my "play frame" is, in fact, incredibly small.

I know that rubber/plastic replicas of barbed wire exist to avoid injury, with blood able to be simulated with dyed fluid stored somewhere in the props or on the clothes. While I'm neither a pyro technician or electrician, the explosions are likely caused by an overloaded electric fence that is spaced a few inches away from the real fence. Of course some injury and discomfort is inevitable, but at least it's not deadly.

the "explosions" just look like smoke and sparks to me, so that was not my primary concern, but i completely agree with the barbed wire. Even if it was fake, maintaining that "play space" requires that the audience knows that it is fake barbed wire, and as a show, revealing the trickery to pull off the stunts only breaks suspension of disbelief. Catch 22. If they reveal the barbed wire is fake, the stakes disappear. If they dont, then the injuries real barbed wire can cause rapidly pull the unprepared observer out of the illusion due to the large concern it raises. Barbed wire isnt the type of thing that has a tame enough reputation to joke about.

To add to some of your points - my favorite part about glitches is wondering about the "why". Video games have extremely strict logic, and when something breaks out of one logic loop, it can have a cascade effect into other loops. I love thinking about what particular system is "misbehaving" when I see something strange, and will often try to replicate the problem or just poke and prod at the strange result in front of me to see if some consistency emerges, or what bizarre qualifier caused it in the first place. I'll often wonder if a bug or glitch exists in a released game because of its difficulty to fix, or it was just deemed less important than other changes that needed to happen. Something about it all just triggers a fascination response unless the glitch results in a harsh setback.

I actually don't talk about my daughter that often to people who don't know her, because she is so mature and wise and spot on sometimes that I know people are going to, "r/thathappened" me. She is also one of the funniest people I know. I generally chalk this up to her being the result of two theatre people breeding, and I'm sure that hasn't hurt. But in truth, outside of the part which is simply innate to her (which let's be real, is the VAST majority of it) I think it's because since she was old enough to understand, I've actually discussed with her what makes things funny. I have a parenting philosophy that I'm not raising a child, I'm raising an adult--which basically just helps me remember that ultimately my goal is to help her be the most functional human she can out in the world. I have found consistently that kids are generally a lot smarter and more with-it than most people give them credit for, and engaging with them more deeply--WHEN AND HOW ITS APPROPRIATE--can make for a way better relationship. Since she was at least as young as 5, if you asked her what is the most important feature of a joke, she would tell you that the punchline has to be unexpected. I still think it's immensely cool that she can internalize that kind of feedback--she was editing an animatic last night and asked my opinion on the progress she had made, and I praised nearly all of it and made one suggestion for a change. She responded and told me that she loved that I'm honest with her like that, because she thinks it helps her get better; most people just say everything is wonderful no matter what, but she would rather people be honest. I'm careful to not be overtly critical, she is a relatively confident kid and I think she feels pretty sure of the adoration I hold for her which is dripping through this entire comment. Hey. So I wanted to geek out on my kid for a few minutes. Worse things in the world.

As someone with ADHD who frequently gets glitched when trying to do too many tasks simultaneously I can tell you they definitely can be incredibly disruptive, but honestly I always laugh afterwards. Imagine trying to grab your keys to leave for work, but midway through reaching for your keys you remember you left your coffee thermos on the counter so you whirl around to go get it, but then you remember the trash is full and you need to double check when trash day is so you whirl back around to the door where your calendar is with the trash days marked, but then you realize you never grabbed your keys and you keep twisting and turning and reaching for 15-20 seconds straight before finally shouting at yourself and stopping yourself so you can break the glitch.

I loved basically every moment of Ghost of Tsushima but the moment that stuck with me the most is one I used my Share button for the first time ever to record because I was laughing so goddam hard. I went into a Mongol camp late game enough to have the surprise decapitation attack for Mongol leaders. I snuck into the leader's tent, chopped his head off and started hoovering up nearby loot, but heard the sound of someone moving around. I turned around to find the headless Mongol lord crawling toward me in pain using the near death animation of normal soldiers. I had inadvertently found the zombie Mongol and laughed until it hurt. 10/10 glitch.

One of my favorite writers, Mark Lawrence, once purposefully edited a glitch into his narrative: The protagonist got caught in a magic spell by his arch enemy, unable to react, move or anything really, and he would have died right then and there if not the caster got kicked by a nearby spooked horse. For some this might feel like a Deus Ex Machina, but to me it just added so much more realism because glitches happen.

When I was younger I would take glitches rather seriously, not in a "oh no, my game is breaking" but more like "ooh, are the walls of reality breaking down? Have I accessed some distorted dimension within the game's world?" (and I imagine the distortion world in Pokemon Platinum was playing on this idea) I suppose glitches look more comical in modern games because as the graphics get more "realistic" it's more obvious when something isn't supposed to be there

3:40 and 6:44 There are... some other exceptions, mainly recreational arts. Opera, theater, streaming, music, dance... and errors are generally frowned upon, except maybe in streaming. Idk if I am ready for music with... oh wait, jazz It's ok, I'll calm the jazz gods down by singing the lick twice, in different keys a tritone appart; wish me luck.

Another interesting perspective on glitches/wonkyness can be found in the amazing part to to codex entry "pathologic for those who will never play it". That game is intentionally janky and hard to play, not to immerse the player deeper, but to make the player realize that they are in fact playing a game, and make them more actively engage with the themes and ideas behind it, similar to berthold brecht plays. It's really long but really great!

I'd guess I'm a bit of an outlier that I've never found real people slipping and falling to be funny in any capacity. I'm always immediately concerned about potential serious consequences. Similarly I'd guess this kind of mindset makes me not enjoy actual wrestling This video is actually a good way for me to understand why people may find such situations funny - because to me, glitches in video games are fun. So in a sense, I can now kind of sort of get the idea, rather than immediately going: "Why the hell would you laugh at something like this?"... Although, I'll probably still do that to be fair Thank you for the overview :)
