cat I passed out when I saw a 5 inch spider on the floor of my room and I slept on the couch for a week. I hate spiders but t spiders in this game for some reason just don’t scare me, only part that is creepy is when you hold them and they wiggle in game. But finding a tarantula in game is great, it’s the most expensive bug in the game selling at 8k, tarantula island is money city

Don't tell him about stardew valley Because there's no goal you don't even have as much small goals like repaying your loan in animal crossing. And your choices aren't limited not even by time.
@BonaparteBardithion
@BonaparteBardithion 4 жыл бұрын
There are some goals. The main story is rebuilding town hall (or grinding for money if you wanna go Joja). But you can complete that in the first couple in-game years if you make it your main focus. At the same time you've got character events (romance being the biggest ones), but you can do those concurrently with the main quest and be done around the same time. Though Concerned Ape is pretty good about spreading events out (one character doesn't even show up until Year 2) and adding new content to keep it fresh. Anyway, there are definite goals and milestones that the player is encouraged to meet. That said, you are in no way required to participate in the main quest to play. The story is complete optional. You're always free to focus on self-set goals like building a barn, getting to the bottom of the mines, catching all the fish, or strategically planting crops to recreate Michelangelo's "Creation of Adam". And that's when it gets a little more sandbox.

Still, I feel like I have way more tasks and clear objectives in that game, mostly because of the very limited time per day. @headphonic8

There are huge goals in stardew valley. The completion of the community center. Achieving all the cutscenes for the characters. Obtaining difficulty items through combat in the mines. Those goals all take WAY longer than paying off Tom Nook's loan, which I'm pretty much doing in a week.

@AmaranthRBY

I mean, nah. Not for everyone. If it's true for you and you've figured that out that's brilliant, but different people have different experiences. I have over a thousand hours in four different games and they're better now than they have ever been. The more I study and the more I understand the games I play, the more I enjoy them. Finding something to analyze and getting in the zone and finding all the answers to my questions and then looking at the clock and realizing that three hours passed since I started - that's the feeling I'm after. When I'm so deep, so fixated with the nuance of the game that I forget about everything else. That's brilliant advice for people who aren't maximizers, but I can't live without analyzing what I'm doing. It just doesn't work for me

Ikr! I have trouble differentiating the songs, for all i know it could just be the same one looped. It's just so boring at ths point where I just block it out completely. I've even played the game while listen to acnl music before
@blockedblock5203
@blockedblock5203 3 жыл бұрын
@@yogurtfan7336 I think I figured out why this is: All of the hourly music in previous games feels like little bits of music without a driving beat, whereas New Horizons' each feels like a full song. Because it feels like a full song with a driving beat, a beginning, and an end, it's much easier to tell when it loops. Since it loops so often for a whole hour and does so so noticeably, it gets repetitive quick. Also, each track for some reason uses the same musical motif taken from the main 'Welcome New Horizons' track which leads to each track feeling very similar to one another and makes each hour blend together into a sort of mush instead of each hour feeling unique and special. The music feels like it's dragging you through the day mindlessly instead of lifting you through it supportively. Summary: The hourly music in NH loops much more noticeably and each hour includes the same motif, making none of the tracks feel unique.
@jaye4521
@jaye4521 3 жыл бұрын
Funnily enough, I felt New Leaf's music was largely bland and elevator-like as well. New Horizon's is worse, but personally, the only AC game whose BGM I like is the original's. It's funkier and more percussion-based. Everything that came after sounds like easy-listening music that is sooner to put me to sleep than get me energized to play the game.

But then there's the sunk cost fallacy. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is $60, a price used by mostly triple A games. A lot for a game if someone doesn't make lots of money. If someone buys the game thinking they'll enjoy but later realize they don't, they wasted their money. (I don't know if the eshop has a refund policy, or how strict it is) The person is then thinks they need to keep playing the game, even if they don't like it, just to get their money's worth. Even if it would be better to spend their time doing something else they enjoy, they play the game because they think they have to.

I find it very interesting that some 'maximizers' (I didn't have a name for that before now) are afraid of certain games like AC. Especially because I *am a maximizer.* The idea of being afraid to try a game is really foreign to me, I'm not sure why. I tend to see the game, see the style, and go 'oh I see that's the idea of how it is played, I bet I would enjoy it in XXX way too' and just dive in. Even if I don't play it *forever,* I have enjoyment in that moment. A note: as a probably *slightly* less maximizer type compared to other maximizers, you can in fact 'maximize' your goal to this game. Like Daryl said, its about just deciding a goal, then going for it. And if you ever feel like 'hey this goal is boring/too fast' then you have infinite other goals to pursue in a game that is so relaxing, you'll often forget you set a goal for yourself, haha. For me, it is always maximizing my house to the final payment (which is even longer and satisfying in this recent game because it has so many great room expansions, size expansions, floor expansions, etc), followed by filling up my entire museum, and always collecting interesting outfits the entire way. It lasts me months to *years,* because I give a little check in every day, that brings a smile to my face. As a 'maximizer,' if you have a switch, just buy it. Hesitating on small decisions so much is more often to result in missing out on something enjoyable and worth the money, rather than 'wasting' it like your worries may tell you.

I thought this video was going in a different direction. I bought a 3DS back then and my first game on it was AC New Leaf. I liked it a lot, but I quickly realized that the main way to play it was to play it 30-60 minutes a day every day. The first week I was cool with this, but as soon as the day came where I felt like I had to play so I don't miss out on the daily fossil or pull the weeds I felt pressured into playing it. I straight up deleted my save after 9-10 days so I stopped sideglancing at my 3DS thinking "well, I should really get my daily half hour of AC in now". In a way it fits into the same category as your problem, but from a different angle. The game is really fun but it just doesn't gel with the way I play games. It's supposed to be feelgood and easygoing, but I got more anxiety from AC than from most other games I played.

I got New Leaf after hearing about it from some friends, and it was kind of fun at first. I mostly just spent my time fishing just to fill out the museum, but it just got kind of old after a while. I should point out that I typically spend very little time on character customization or aesthetics in these kinds of games. I usually get one set of clothes, which is usually just the default or a random selection, and use it for the rest of the game. I feel like this severely limits the enjoyment that I can get out of Animal Crossing. That said however, when playing Pokemon Ultra Moon, I decided to try playing as a girl character for a change. Not too long afterwards I noticed that I didn't seem to have any money available for pokeballs or healing items. Funny how just a single gender-swap was enough to completely change my spending habits. I actually started to get invested in how my character looked. Maybe I should give Animal Crossing another try.

Same's probably true for MMOs, I never fully bought that roleplaying as the opposite gender explanation. There seems to be a tendency to care for a gender more... Only now (after three weeks playing) I'm starting planning out the layout and moving buildings/terraforming to get it the way I want it. I didn't think much about placement before because I knew I would change it anyway. Also, the fact that the game is super chill allows me to do one thing at a time and not worry about having everything all done at once. I mean, technically the "finish line" for acnh is to get kk slider at your island (credits roll) but yeah after that I guess you could say it "goes on forever". Most people have a goal of achieving a "perfect island" (five star rating) or to complete everything by obtaining every item/catching every bug or fish (gotta catch 'em all!) edit: if you're going to comment being nit picky over a light hearted comment don't waste you're time. This was such a dumb thing for people to get pressed over. IDK why so many people want to foam at the mouth and argue about it isn't endgame if theres still playable content. In my opinion, KK Slider visiting your island marks the end of the tutorial rather than the ‘end’ of the game. Before KK goes to your island, you have to do a bunch of things for Tom Nook with the purpose of teaching you aspects of the game. After you finish ‘working’ for Tom Nook in NH, the restrictions are finally taken off and you now have access to all of the features in the game. It’s just like the Tom Nook’s part time job tutorial in the other games. Except this time it just takes like a month rather than 10 minutes. (Also, I think they play the credits during every live KK show just cause it’s a convenient place to put them)
@omgitsLindsay
@omgitsLindsay 4 жыл бұрын
@@FriendsAreHere that's a good point. There's a huge chunk of the game only available after KK Slider comes for the first time. Some would argue that those features are the main part of the game. His first performance being "end game" just doesn't make sense considering that.

This video is so accurate to my anxiety it hurts - people don't understand when [generally speaking] customization can be a turn off for me. It's just too much responsibility. But sometimes it depends: in a character maker (or player customization), I can never have too many options, for example. All the hair styles, eye colors, skin tones, clothes, 20 colors for one dress, shoes, whatever, I want it. Usually I never like to settle down with one look and change it up all the time, so it's good that ACNH gives you that freedom. HOWEVER... my struggles with customization begin where it "actually matters" - in Animal Crossing, that would be customizing the island. What if I spend all my time making a pathway only to have to dig it up and move it somewhere else, what if I have a "dead area" where I can't figure out where to put anything, what if I organize my island perfectly but then have to move everything around when they add new stuff in updates, what if I need this seasonal item five months from now or something I don't know, what would be practical or impractical, what if Resident Services is in a bad area, etc... how is this relaxing for anyone?! mmh. Interesting discussion. I have a slightly different problem, which I guess works in my favour for a game like Animal Crossing. I do struggle with decisions when it's an either/or thing. I really hate having to commit to something, so it drives me nuts and makes me feel like even if I did choose something, did I miss out on something else? OK, so what does this have to do with Animal crossing? Well, when decisions aren't meaningfully mutually exclusive (eg I can in fact have both without too much issue)... I just end up getting both. (in the real world I don't have that kind of money, but in a game? That's not usually a problem) So... Yeah. The end result of that kinda makes me a hoarder. So a game like animal crossing, expect me to kinda just own... everything there is to own? Whether I end up actually liking any given item or not? ... You see where that's a problem in itself? I mean, it's less of an issue in a game because you don't typically run into things like storage constraints (until you do, at which point things get pretty annoying. XD) Yeah... Let's hear it for digital hoarders huh. XD

A Maximizer like myself would likely spend like 20 minutes on the screen, sifting through all the clothes once, twice, maybe three times, getting the colors just right, and seeing how the hair looks at all angles, while a Satisfier may just scroll till they find one they like, and then be done from there, without bothering to look at the extra options.

You had to go and do Dimitri like that sir. I actually had to make a poll to see if I want to play AC, asked friends... but still ended up just staying with fe3h. Awesome vids! Subscribed \o/

It's interesting how differently people react to this type of game. Both Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing New Horizon give me huge anxiety spikes to play. I kept trying to force myself to play them because I kept hearing they're "relaxing and wholesome" and now even hearing their music makes me tense up lol

You really described that well, but when it comes to these "sudden merchants" that just... show up and offer something I might not buy anywhere else, my go-to behaviour is to shut off the game and ignore it completely if I am not able to buy it that second.

I understand that fear, but the folks at Nintendo know about it, and made a lot of decitions to avoid it

Generally speaking, I think one thing that helps is that there isn't any "Permanently Missable Content" due to the way the RNG in this game is set up. If you missed something you just have to wait a bit, should be on sale again in a bit. The RNG is biased towards things you don't have yet, so repeats of things you already have are pretty rare. and then there's wisp who appears on a couple nights and after completing a quest lets you either get something that's probably quite expensive, or something you definitely haven't already acquired. And then there's the marketplace on harvey's island that unlocks after the K.K. Slider Quest and let's you visit the random "peddlers" as they're called, even when they're not on your island, since they'll set up shop there, and THEN there's Cyrus and Reese, making a triumphant return from New Leaf allowing you to customize any furniture item, in ways even YOU can't do normally, including non-customizable items with unique variants, like the Board Game decoration.

0:15 penguins actually aren't afraid of humans at all so they probably do see humans as just big penguins (but probably don't care about the size)

i really enjoyed the previous animal crossing games because though the game was endless there were limited options in, for example, house decorating and town design specifically because terraforming or any way of actually changing the layout of the town was impossible. shops, houses and the museum had a solid place you couldn't move but now that you can actually change literally every single position of water bodies, town decorations and houses it just became TOO overwhelming for me because now there were so many options that i simply ended up not doing any of them because i couldn't decide - and because i suck at designing and such. acnh was one big round of fanservice because it removed every single thing fans complained about which ironically were the things that made the game enjoyable for me in the first place.

I'm lucky when it comes specifically to the Maximizers drama involving Animal Crossing. You see, like you I also search through all of the options for things like clothing, because when it involves my presentation and appearance, I NEED it to look just right. I spent, no joke, an hour going through sixty frames for glasses, found that one I actually liked, then when I finally got the frames I was STILL unsatisfied!.... But...here's the thing... When it comes to something I deem nonconsequential (in this case, Animal Crossing), I try to have as much fun as possible with my options, even if they're not the best. I have a character that wears dresses, just because I like playing with the color harmony, and not because I like wearing dresses. I like taking an ugly sweater, and finding a pair of pants/haircut/etc to make it "work." Even if it's not the best (or not even successful), I just convince myself that it's not important, because at the end of the day it's just a game with zero consequences to my actual life. In some videogames, I'm willing to die to do a cool/interesting thing, because I know it's just a game and I'll come back to life. Ask me to do this in real life and I'll jump through hoops just to avoid the situation all together (this is why I don't take studies about online anonymity and social experiments too seriously, because they're decisions based in an artificial universe). So to address your main point: Why worry about a fake reality? It's purpose is to have fun.

i guess i'm the same. i've bought multiple of the same thing jut so i can have it multiple times as other want optins. i.e square framed (typical nerdy ish glasses) and a beard. i wish beards were just a customisable option like the hair and are either just on you constantly but meh. maybe it's because irl i own those glasses and love then and i really want a beard but in other cases like clothes, i buy almost every colour variation i like and not just one so i can make the perfect outfit i love. But when it comes to thing like terraforming, breeding flowers or wondering where to place houses, i didnt care less tbh. i know thats a big part of the game but all i'm caring for atm is looking good with variety, the museum and paying off house dept.

jrpgs have towns with inns where your character relaxes and unwinds from the stress of life threatening situations at the cost of chump change deducted from what they got paid from their job in the military industrial complex. animal crossing is like that too, except you can take over the town, although not to the degree you can in fable or overlord.

This was interesting and educational. It's funny I find myself to be a maximizer in the opposite way to you. I purchase games on a whim, but spend ages max/min-ing stats. And I usually play games with no ending, as opposed to being afraid of them.

I didn't know all these fancy schmancy words before watching this video. now I know what's been holding me from gradually finishing my video game backlog even when I have time to spend (which I'd ultimately use to meaninglessly surf on youtube watching videos I don't actually like anyway). I still don't get a solution to my problem though -_-.
