So I came up with this idea when you were talking about those statues in Celeste: Imagine a level in a game with with all those disembodied eyes in the wall constantly following your every step, which is creepy and unnerving on its own. After a while, you enter a big, seemingly empty room and explore it, when SUDDENLY all the eyes jolt away from you to the other side of the room, wide open and trembling with fear, all looking towards the same point, but you see nothing. After a few moments of eery silence, you notice the eyes' gaze slowly shifting towards you, and suddenly you get attacked out of nowhere and the boss fight starts: you have to use the eyes to triangulate the location of whatever this thing is in order to fight it.

I imagine the level starts out with no eyeballs. As you progress, one opens up, but doesn't end up looking at you. More and more eyes soon start to open up. Eventually, once you kill an enemy, one of the eyes starts... eying you. As you continue on, overcoming obstacles, killing more enemies, more and more eyes start to open up and quickly take notice of you. Eventually every single eyeball that is ever onscreen at some point is *always* looking at you. Word gets around quickly. You have their unwavering attention for quite some time. *Then, you walk into the boss room.*

The fear of unknown is huge. While watching horror movies - once the evil thing is revealed to us, i stop being afraid. But the whole time when it is unknown - it is scary. Therefore if you show just eyes in the darkness, you can sht pants but if the creep goes out to the light... yeah it may look scary but now you know what you have to deal with so it's less unpredictable and so less scary.

I really like how they used this in Darkest Dungeon's Crimson Court dlc. You are hunting down vampire nobility hanging out in an eternal ball. You just can't go and kill the nobility whenever you feel like it. They have to invite you to the ball themselves where you fight them and as you fight them there is a group of vampires hanging out in the background. They just drink and chat, but whenever you fuck up they laugh at you and cheer and clap when you take critical hits. Your struggle is just entertainment for them. I just love it, makes you feel weak .

7:58 interesting thing happens to me. When I'm playing a competitive game, like Smash or Smite, and people are watching, I definitely play worse and think about how people are judging me. But when I know people are watching me play a single player game, like Celeste or Mario Maker, I thrive in it and play much better. I'm not sure why that is, but I've noticed that about myself over the last few months.
@Kurochana2 жыл бұрын
Maybe it has to do with the fear of letting others down/what others feel in competitive games, causing you to overthink or get distracted. Compared to something like having an opportunity to show off your prowess in a single player game.

You definitely made the correct thumbnail choice. Ha! I originally thought this video was about playing video games while being watched irl (like with a friend). Obviously I am wrong but this is a great video! "Be clever with whatever information you present the player and what information you withhold. Sometimes the players own deep dark imagination and ability to fill in the blanks is greater nightmare fuel than you can ever crate." This has never been more apparent to me since playing multiple playthroughs in the latest Resident Evil 2. Your first time is the scariest because of what you see and your own fear of the unknown, your second time is less scary because you become normalized to what you see and you known (almost) all there is, your third time almost all fear is gone as you rush through the playthrough knowing what to expect. It's a ride of an experience; I highly recommend!

7:20 "Ruin has come to our family. You remember our venerable house, opulent and imperial. Gazing proudly from its stoic perch above the moor. I lived all my years in that ancient, rumor shadowed manor. Fattened by decadence and luxury. And yet, I began to tire of conventional extravagance. Singular, unsettling tales suggested the mansion itself was a gateway to some fabulous and unnamable power. With relic and ritual, I bent every effort towards the excavation and recovery of those long buried secrets, exhausting what remained of our family fortune on swarthy workmen and sturdy shovels. At last, in the salt-soaked crags beneath the lowest foundations we unearthed that damnable portal of antediluvian evil. Our every step unsettled the ancient earth but we were in a realm of death and madness! In the end, I alone fled laughing and wailing through those blackened arcades of antiquity. Until consciousness failed me. You remember our venerable house, opulent and imperial. It is a festering abomination! I beg you, return home, claim your birthright, and deliver our family from the ravenous clutching shadows of the Darkest Dungeon."

in the middle of watching your fighting game video and this comes out, lucky lucky! this was a great video, one fun thought though I wish you had brought up. At one point you mentioned being observed by other players in multiplayer and showed some footage of overwatch but then went on to focus more on ambiguous observation. I was hoping you'd touch on ambiguous observation in multiplayer, particularly in stealthy battle royale style games. Hamish Black made a really neat video touching on this (QVWyHl6YOGE), how it felt to never really know if someone, a real person, was ever watching you or not. Eyes are creepy yeah, but seeing signs of activity in a multiplayer game adds so many more questions I feel and makes you much more spooked. I've never really gotten into the battle royale scene, but it's always fun to hear people talk about it in their videos. "Being Watched" definitely seems to play a major role in those sorts of games. Anyways, rambling, good video fam!

When I watched the first 20 seconds I had my back to a wall. At first I though I didn't turn around was because I'm courageous, turns out I just didn't realize

I am so paranoid that when you just showed those two dots at the beginning I had looked behind myself for a good three seconds, when you started talking about it I look behind myself around four times. Then when he had given the example of the people looking behind you, why did you NOT give them pupils, that was so hecking creepy and I had to avoid looking looking at my phone. And what the hell was in Kirbys "Ghastly Canvas Course"?! That was pure nightmare fuel.

I thought this was how people's performance on a game is lowered when someone irl is watching you

When you started talking about masks the first thing I thought of was Bosco from Fallout 4

Had to think of Observer at the beginning of this video… Gosh, this was so interesting, I got goosebumps a bunch of times!! I love how pretty much everything concerning psychology can be tracked back to basic animal instincts! I think the informational influence concept was also tested once with people turning into a specific direction in an elevator. A test subject then entered the elevator and after a short while positioned itself in the same way the others did. I think the concept of ambiguity and using it to one's advantage and intentionally withholding information (creating a mystery) is really awesome and I'd love to see more of it! To sum it all up: humans are weird, haha.

Haha oh humans definitely are. And I know the elevator experiment you're talking about, that was actually about social conformity, but it does tie into informational influence. When a ton of people are doing something, even if its weird, its the "norm", so people might conform. This is how things like the tide pod crisis happen haha. They did another experiment like that in a waiting room, its kind of hilarious kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGqyaoaloLmHd5o

I will say, this is quite true, a new game that came out after this video called creature in the well, had this thing that had eyes and watching you, and makes a creepy door sounds when they get up. Its pretty scary when your in a part then boom, eyes watching when you look away.

Real life spectators make me unable to play. Any time my parents would come into the room, my performance went down drastically.

*I ALWAYS FEEL LIKE SOMEBODY’S WATCHING ME, AND I HAVE NO PRIVACY!*

Here’s the thing about the beginning part where you said that I was being watched, I totally would have turned around (like you predicted) if it weren’t for the fact that the feeling of being watched is almost there for me, I always feel like someone or something is watching my every move. With the terrible addition of , every time I’m in a public space and do anything that would grab the attention of anyone, I feel somewhere around 500-1000 eyes burning into me, even if it may only be a room with 15 people inside it,
