Masterpiece 10/10. Unverified information, the premiere was held in front of former submariners (3 out of 4 did not return from the assignment), almost half of them walked out during the screening, not because of inaccuracies and a bad script or bad acting, but because of the attack of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that the film caused

If you see the TV-series it is even better with the boredom and the characters come to life even better. And the ending is even more effective. I believe that Germans was more philosophical than you US-people think. The way they talked in the movie feels realistic for an European as me and I'm swedish.

Fair enough! Thanks for the clarification. We have not had the pleasure of experiencing a European culture on such a way that would allow us to understand the philosophical nature of their conversations. So this is good to know, thank you!

@@samebutdiff before the second world war Germany was the country for higher education. The rest of Europe had lots of people who had German as their second language (as we today has got English) and the University's in Germany was regarded as the best of the best in the world. And then came Hitler and the Nazis and destroyed it all. It is still hard to learn German language without getting contaminated with Hitler and it's an effort to get around that. The man who played Lieutenant Werner is actually helping out a lot since he is now a huge rock star in German language area of Europe and his songs are awesome! Look up Herbert Grönemeyer!

The University's in Germany is still regarded as the best. But the main language is leaning towards English and it's really a shame. German language is really beautiful if you dive in to it.

You are right about German philosophy. Nietzsche Schoppenhauer Marx etc. The short version of the film is shit, makes no sense. The series is the only true version.

Re: Boredom: The author of the novel the movie is based on used his own experiences as a war correspondent (i.e. Lt. Werner is basically his alter ego). But he actually condensed SEVERAL sorties with U-Boats into one, because otherwise, there'd be yet even more boredom, even less "events" and the whole thing would not have been particularly engaging for readers. Most of the events in the movie did happen in one or the other trip - but they didn't all happen during one single trip.

The shortened theatrical version is actually the worst of all of the Das Boot versions. I'm always warning the reaction channels and other people, who want to watch Das Boot, NOT to watch the crappy, shortened theatrical version. It is cut down to the action scenes and that is NOT what the spirit of Das Boot is and what makes it so special. The directors Cut is still relative short and not as good as the much longer TV-mini-series version. So you already watched a relative short version with the directors cut. The uncut TV-mini-series version is the original version of Das Boot. All other versions are cut short versions. That is including the cut short Directors Cut. The "boredom" added to the quality of that movie. It added realism and was building up tension. This is showing you, how unrealistic the most other war movies are and how the modern cinema suffers from an overload of unrealistic hyper-action all of the time. The dialogues were normal for Europe and especially Germany. Those conversations in Das Boot are normal conversations and not overly philosophical. Maybe a cultural difference to the USA. Even the boss of the U-boats, Admiral Dönitz, only joined the NSDAP in 1944. Very late in the war. So yes: You were allowed to be in the Military without joining the Nazi party.

Thanks for reviewing this one. For you two it was 3,5 hours, for these men it was 3,5 months. The boredom was certainly real and almost another character of the crew. Not a friend of ratings, though.

That’s so interesting and true to consider boredom as a character. Love that! When you say you’re not a friend of ratings, do you not like ours? Or do you not like rating movies in general??

My top underwater movies... "Das Boot" - Theatrical, Directors and the miniseries cut. "Das Boot" 2018 - the new SKY series. Takes off after the events of the movie "Das Boot" in La Rochelle "Crimson Tide" 1995 "K-19: The Widowmaker" 2002 (i almost forgot this one... shame on me. Excellent movie! Chernobyl underwater...) "The Abyss" 1989 "The Hunt for the Red October" 1990 "Kursk" 2018 was fine. "The Enemy Below" 1957 - Some of the oldies :)

"Boot" in German is pronounced like the British English "Bought". Even longer "ooh" sound. Nothing like "uuh" in the footwear :D. Cheers!
