So much time spent flying these from SYR/PHL and back, never realized that they wouldn’t be here forever. Godspeed Dash 8.

Nice documentary. Dash 8 are still flying. Soon I will be flying 3 Dash 8-100 (the slower 37 seats version) over a total of a 4 segments flight return from Montreal to Iles de la Madeleine in the gulf of St-Lawrence. I love the Dash 8. I have meet a woman with whom I have lived 14.5 years on a Dash 8-100. She sat in seat 8A. I sat in 8B. Row 8 was the last row before the famous row 9 with it's 5 seats. I also remember flying into Hilton Head airport under heavy crosswind. How many people do you think have special memories involving the Dash 8? Getting there is part of the fun too.

When I was a kid I remember there were Dash8 type cert tests happening at my hometown C-YAM . During one test a prop blade went through the fuse. Years later I worked in Downsview building Q400’s ... I’ve always had an emotional attachment to these imperfect Canadian birds .

Very nicely done; a fitting tribute to two "greats", an excellent airline, and versatile aircraft. Seeing an organization flush with "graybeards", and their dedication, is heartwarming. I'm a retired industrial engineer, who supported FQIS for a major airframe manufacturer, and took many-'a "Peidmont puddle jumper" out of PHL, as my home-base was located in Chester County.

💗 I will always be team dashbird 😃. I feel like this is definitely one of the most heartfelt legacy pieces on this amazing bird 💗. Thank you for sharing this again Piedmont.... and also thank you for taking care of the greatest plane that not only was (and still is) my best friend.... she is also the plane that reignited my love for aviation again 😃💖. We will all miss her and her siblings, but.... they will definitely not be forgotten 💖

Glad to have watched this story about a good plane from Canada that was embraced by a good airline in America. de Havilland is quite a company and so is/was Henson.

The de Havilland Canada legacy continues as Viking Air Ltd. in Victoria, B.C. builds the DHC-2 Beaver, DHC-3 Otter, DHC-4 Caribou, DHC-5 Buffalo, DHC-6 Twin Otter, and DHC-7 (Dash 7). Bombardier recently announced plans to sell the rights to the Dash 8 and the de Havilland name to Viking, whose parent company owns the Q400 plant in Downsview, Ontario.

Cool video! Worked at HHH/HXD for about a year for the contractor handling the Piedmont USAEX/AAE flights. Recognized several of our employees and Piedmont aircrew. Was very challenging at times in that we had a very short runway and no ILS. We could go 2-3 day a couple times a year with all flights cancelled. Lots of fun at the counter telling the customers the airline doesn't compensate for acts of God.

Turboprops don't need as long a runway to land and take off as a pure jet airliner. Turboprops are more fuel efficient. Also, some say driving a vehicle with a manual transmission is real driving. Is say that flying in a propeller driven airliner, is "Real Flying"! I also find the sound that the props make to be amusing, the "The Box Fan" sound in high idle and taxiing, and the "Bumblebee" sound in takeoff and infight.

This is such a beautiful video! Its funny how here in Ithaca most people just know the Dash 8 as the one small, noisy propeller plane that used to fly into here a lot (if they even know the name of the Dash 8, if they don't they'll just call it "the propeller plane"), and now next time someone says that I'll have to shows them this lol. Seriously though, its an amazing story behind this plane!

Piedmont goes back to the 1950s and they operated quite large aircraft into the 1980s - includung Boeing 767s. Dash 8s fly over my house many times a day on the way into Southampton (UK).

Great video and tribute. It's interesting, but not surprising, how many can become emotionally attached to certain aircraft. It's a little scary, however, they were all different and some even built by management during a strike. Hopefully the Q400 has better quality control.

This may not be flown by Piedmont anymore... do not forget that the Dash 8 100/200/300 series are by no means going into the sunset anywhere... on the contrary, their used prices are at a premium due to their capability around the world and buyers and leasors are scrambling to get them. The Dash 8 "classics" will still be going strong in 2060...

Care to bet on it? A proven tough aircraft frame that is designed for austere conditions, will continue to keep on going... and going... and going... C-130... B-52... B737... B767 (most Boeing products) DH6... DH8 (most DeHavilland products)... Aircraft do not have a retirement date; for that fact, DC-3's developed in the 1930's soldier on and on and on in an upgraded form all over the world. It will be the same with the Dash 8 series, I promise you that. The B-52 is not planned to be retired until the 2040s, some 90 years after first flight!

The only limitation(s) to your surmission, are determining an effective "post life expectancy maintenance schedule/program", and the ability to produce 'spares and supportive materiels' for that afterlife.
@JimWakable

...Which are all well established for the Dash 8. We operate several. Besides the fact that slowly, other aircraft are cannibalized for parts to support a slowly dwindling fleet. 2060 is not unreasonable. If not, then 2050... the point is that the DH8 series fits a very unique niche in the world in austere operations. It excels in this environment. I should know because I go "off pavement" with one all the time, in the middle of the bush in northern Canada; from +35 c down to -45 c (brr)... One of a couple types I fly... complete confidence in the aircraft.

Why didn't Piedmont acquire the Q400? It is hard to understand why this plane was retired when they continue to sell it and improved it and it's such a great craft. It's the smoothest of all the AA craft I've ever been on. May be passengers got the wrong idea that these "puddle jumpers" aren't smooth when in reality they actually are incredibly stable and safe. Why didn't Piedmont acquire Q400's?

My most used airline recently changed from Dash8 300 to ATR and he ATR is horrible. Very uncomfortable and handles bad weather way worse. I can only say the ATR is quieter. I hate it . Same question why did they not switch to the Q400 and went with ATR.

@Aviation380

I'm not an expert, but I would think considering the -400 is a 70-80 seat airplane and Piedmont replaced the Dash's with the ERJ's (a 50 seat airplane, the same as the -300), the -400 simply wasn't what they were looking for.
