Everybody's talking about how good his Mandarin and Cantonese are but that's obvious. It's his hands and gestures that truly amaze me - he MOVES like a Chinese person, orates and uses rhetorical devices in gestural components like one. That is some serious absorption of culture, something to aspire to.

I like how this guy is the OG and then there is Julien and then obviously Xioama who thinks Julien is one of the goats. I wonder who Dashan's master is even... probably somewhere up in the hills, cloud hidden, herb gathering.
老外? have some respect. His knowledge of Chinese is probably better than yours.
@mialiu9405 жыл бұрын
@@brucebergkamp What are u talking about? There is no disrespect at all, “老外” is just a nickname of “foreigner”. In Mandarin sometimes we would add “老” before people's surname as their nicknames, for example “老王” literally means “old wang”, this type of nickname used to refer to middle-aged men but nowadays is commonly used in males of all ages . Same for “老外”, except here “外” is not a surname but means “foreign”. Actually lots of foreigners who understand Mandarin use “老外” to call themselves as well, it's not a derogatory term at all.
My favorite thing is to see the people in the audience dying of laughter. 🤣 It's so wholesome.

Dudes like this are why I will ALWAYS deny my Mandarin is even a little good. I started at 26 and I'll always be 一点, and I'm okay with that. This is goat level fluency, but also super inspiring.
This is so beautiful for a fellow Canadian to watch. I cannot put it into words We need bridge builders like Dashan to bridge the gap between our cultures with laughter
Really like Dashan how he flattered the Northerners when he said that mandarin is now the main Chinese language overseas. And then telling them that their language is not as pure and close to Middle Chinese as Cantonese.
@zwang39093 жыл бұрын
That's just for comedy purpose. Apart from Min I don't think there's any modern dialect that is “closer” to older Chinese than others.
@luissantiago84463 жыл бұрын
Cantonese is actually an older language then Mandarin. It is closer to how Chinese was spoken centuries ago, and preserves many of the terms and words.
Very impressive; he spoke what many Chinese can't speak themselves. Thumbs up!

it is great to see you perform throughout all these years. I've watched you when I was a kid and living in China. It feels totally different to watch your performance now that I know both sides. It is awesome and I hope to see more.
Hilarious, it was a little off-putting to see him have to apologize so much (working the crowd, I get it), but i learned quite a bit about the different voicings between Mandarin and Cantonese. Very cool!
@waterfoker85582 жыл бұрын
If you don't apologize in China, ppl take you literally as comedy is no as free and mainstream as in western country, the CCP can ban you for saying anything wrong
@RyanAmparo-tl2 жыл бұрын
He has to. Otherwise, his joke about Beijing air can be construed as some thinly veiled criticism. You might think it's petty, but CCP has a history of taking offense even for little jokes like this. So, he has to backpedal with "but it's been improving recently."
Being a Cantonese-speaking HongKonger, I am really impressed by this speech!! It really promotes Cantonese!!

I love hearing the Mandarin tongue and love it even more to hear excellent Mandarin spoken by a non-Chinese
Came across this clip by chance, and I could not stop laughing... I was amazed by his understanding of the nuances of each dialects. His Cantonese is really good; it is funny that he speaks Cantonese with a bit of Mandarin accent, not English accent. Also, not sure if the audiences got it, but Dashan/Mark did a great imitation of Jean Chrétien as well. He probably speaks French really well too. Thank you Mark; wish you the best.
