They were eating pistachio nuts. Back then, when the nuts were being processed, the shells would get splotchy stains on them which looked unappetizing, so they were dyed red to conceal the stains, and the red color would get on your fingers and lips.

Nordberg, the cop who gets injured at the start and then spends the entire movie in the hospital, was played by O. J. Simpson. He was a famous football player, who in 1994 was accused of murdering his ex-wife and her friend. He was found not guilty at trial, but lost a lawsuit filed by the victims' families. In 2007, he was arrested for armed robbery and spent several years in prison. The bad guy was played by Ricardo Montalban, a fairly famous and respected actor. At that point in his career, he was most well known for playing Mr. Rourke on the TV show Fantasy Island from 1977-1984.

Dasha in case you missed it the bald guy in the beginning that Frank puts in a headlock is Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the Soviet Union. He was well-known for having a pronounced birthmark on his head, so Frank wipes it off and says, "I knew it!" like it was fake all along. Leslie Neilson (Frank Drebin) started out as a serious actor but became a famous comedy actor. His most popular films were Airplane! and The Naked Gun trilogy (based on the tv series Police Squad.) He also did a Mel Brooks film, Dracula: Dead and Loving It, and several other films parodying popular movies such as Wrongfully Accused, a take-off on The Fugitive with Harrison Ford.

While Nielsen delivers a very deadpan performance, I don't know that I'd really consider him a straight man in this one. In Airplane! absolutely, (in fact almost that entire movie was nothing but straight men. Leslie Nielson was the actor who played Frank Drebbin, the main character. He is a Canadian actor who started out playing serious roles but after the movie Airplane (made by the same guys as the Naked Gun) he began making comedies.

They're eating pistachios, I think. For some reason they used to dye the shells red or green. Maybe they were a popular thing to serve at Christmas. Damn... now I want some pistachios.

I love all the Naked Gun movies. The silly slap stick and daddy humor gets me all the time. Also, Leslie Nielsen is just win he's a natural. Check out other films like Dracula: Dead and Loving it, Airplane or the Hot Shots movies. All classics (to me). Edit: One of the inside jokes (one of many I'm sure) is that if you notice, every time Frank is stopping his police car he always hits something :) And its a running gag in all 3 movies.

Dasha as a *"Russian"* I expected you to *Mikhail Gorbachev* of *Soviet Russia* at the beginning before he had his birthmark removed LOL

That's Mikhail Gorbachev, last general secretary of the Soviet Union. Boris Yeltsin followed him as the first Russian President and had a head full of silver hair.

#TheNietzschean Perspective:: Dasha claims to "Not Get Comedy" ... but I think she has a wonderful grasp on "American Humor!"

I said the other day I was confident you'd understand all the jokes and I wasn't wrong, doesn't happen often though lol. This type of film is great to watch if you're bored as the story is easy to follow and the humour is great, very childish humour. In England Dasha we'd call this humour "Tongue in Cheek", silly humour, silly jokes that make you chuckle. This film came about due to an older TV show called Police Squad which was basically the same type of humour.
