I am from the States, and other than being on the other side of the road, it could be video of our drivers. Evidently none of us are training drivers very well. But the real enjoyment of the video for me was the scenery. The buildings and the land and plant life around the traffic ways I enjoyed. Will probably never get across the "pond", so you were my travel agent. Thanks again, and greatings from the "States"!

At 7:39 we see the driver go for an overtake involving him attempting to pass five vehicles ... the Audi driver ahead of him had just two vehicles to pass and the camera car driver should realise that an overtake by a driver who has fewer cars to pass than he does could be fairly likely to go for an overtake, as any of the cars in front of him could ... they ALL have fewer cars to pass, ... we should try to think about what other drivers may be thinking in the circumstances we are in ... but that said, had the Audi driver and the camera car driver considered, not just what was coming from behind, but what was ahead, particularly in the form of side turnings and / or concealed entrances? ... For an overtake he needed to check mirrors and over shoulder BEFORE SIGNALLING ... though an overtake in this situation was a bad move, see below. He should never have signalled, that was his mistake, as well as not checking behind ... the two mistakes were connected, one led to the other. The Audi driver is what I call a "magic wand" merchant ... this is why it is taught in advanced driving that we should only signal when another road user or pedestrian will benefit from that signal ... in this situation but where only one or two cars needed to be passed and assuming a view ahead told us that there were no side roads or concealed entrances to the right, I'd say that a signal, even though there may have been nobody approaching from behind, would be a good thing ... it would benefit anyone behind who was already considering an overtake, even though they hadn't yet committed to it, but rearward observation needs to be had before committing to giving a signal. I would not have had any faith on this road in believing that there were no side roads etc. to the offside ahead, I would assume that there were these hazards and would not have overtaken here. It may have been possible to see far enough ahead to pass one ... perhaps two cars ... no more than that, even two is doubtful but you'd need to have been there to know for sure. (The reason for only signalling when that signal will benefit another road user is that it makes you look BEFORE signalling. It forces you to evaluate whether a signal is actually gonna benefit anyone ... if it isn't, then don't give one. The people who signal and then pull out regardless are using the indicator as if it was a magic wand ... believing somehow, that their signal makes it safe to pull out even though no checks were made beforehand! They don't evaluate whether a signal will benefit anyone at all ... they just give the signal and pull out! This happens a lot on all of our roads, including motorways. The magic wand principle doesn't work and could kill you and others, it has done so many times in the past. We all need to realise that a minority of drivers do this regularly but that minority is a considerable number.) Back to the video ... Had the Audi driver properly checked behind as described he would never have pulled out so a signal would never have been given, it would never have been necessary ... MSM ... in that order ... this has become nowadays, Mirror, Signal, Position, Speed and Look system. The MSPSL is an extension of the familiar MSM (Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre) routine. So in both cases here the first thing to do is to check behind (*M*irrors & over shoulder check for the blind spot) before the second part (*S*ignal) occurs ... if it is clear with nothing approaching from behind then a driver can pull out to overtake if all is clear ahead and that includes thinking about and looking for side roads etc. (*M*anoeuvre, or position with MSPSL). The fact is though, and considering the camera car, in this situation, overtaking any long line of traffic involves a considerable distance to be covered in the opposing carriageway. Assuming the speed of the overtaking vehicle is at an average of 65mph then that vehicle is travelling at around 98 feet per second ... call it 100fps. (1.5 x speed in mph = fps as near as makes no difference) The overtake would have taken around 13 seconds as a minimum ... this means that the overtaking vehicle was in the opposing lane for around 1300 feet, or 400 metres. There was a gravelled pull in or farm track on the offside during that overtake and a vehicle could have emerged from it. It wasn't a side road btw... there was no give way or stop line at the major road we are on, but it was an area where a vehicle could have turned into the overtaking vehicle. It was indicated by a broken white edge marking at the edge of the road ... difficult to see until you are close to it. This 400m distance is far too long to be in the opposing lane as there was no way for the driver of the overtaking vehicle to know whether a concealed entrance, a side road or such a pull in / layby / farm track as described, existed. A highly dangerous manoeuvre. ROSPA have provided this information for us, it may surprise some people. "More deaths occur on rural roads than on urban ones. In 2014, there were 982 fatal accidents on rural roads compared to 591 on urban roads." I'd say our road here is a rural road. One of the deadliest kinds of road traffic collisions occurs where a driver is about to enter our major road from a side road or a concealed entrance (/exit) from the offside wishing to make a left turn. Many drivers wishing to make a left turn, as they approach and reach the give way lines will look to their right ... (where they are fully aware that traffic which presents a threat to them could be approaching,) ... and then when that is seen to be clear, will pull out into the major road ... many will not check to their left before emerging, ... where they should be thinking about a vehicle who is overtaking slower vehicles, and in their carriageway ... being about 10 seconds, if that, away from killing them. Incidentally, all of the vehicles in that "queue" behind the van were travelling too close to each other ... It is said in the video that they were all travelling at around 30mph, unless I misread the situation shown in the video .. it looks like they were all around 40 feet apart max. A two second gap means they should have been around 90 feet apart (dry conditions) minimum. This wasn't the case and you should have checked before overtaking that there was sufficient a gap for you to enter in front of any of them before committing to the overtake otherwise you could be left in "no-man's land" ... up a certain creek without a paddle!. Not good driving by all I'd say.
@hulverfarm51326 жыл бұрын
I'd say another thing, you say the van was doing 50% of the speed limit, so what! 60 MPH is the maximum on that road not the minimum. He may have been in "take home" mode, he may have a crap engine, I have an old transit with a gutless engine with a maximum speed of 50 MPH even on motorways, we are all entitled to be on the road so long as the vehicle is roadworthy MOT'd, taxed and insured.
