Peace Ninja • I should have qualified and quantified my flippant retort, young man! Lol. Thank you for bringing it to my attention, because I’m usually the one who hollers “don’t say always or never!” (Except when you’re talking about our creator God.) Of course, not all young’uns drive like that. Hopefully, not even most! Many Younger 4-wheel drivers are just as bad. Not a cop, but I am old. I was a kiddo when my dad’s construction company laid down most of I-40 thru Tennessee, so I was always around roadbuilding, especially the “brand new super highway that many oldsters were afraid to drive on. I grew up in two cities 150 miles apart (divorced parents), and later spent much of my career on the road. So I’ve observed some changes in my 64 years - to be fair, I’ll count only the years I’ve been driving. That would be about 50 years. I’ve listed some of these observations: 1. The roads are crowded! You young folks really would have loved the open road way back when. When you could set your cruise control (yes, it was invented in the dark ages) and cruise pretty much from city to city without disengaging even once. I find now, much of the time, I don’t even use it. 2. Construction! Of course, back when the interstates were new and fairly new, they were built with the best engineers and the best experienced road crews with the best materials. There again, increased traffic means increased upkeep, but tbh, I don’t think road upkeep - even in cities - is done as well as it used to be. (Any roadbuilders or city employees reading this, I welcome your input. I feel like city/county/state/federal budgets have a lot to do with this.) 3. Like I said before, there was a time when truck drivers seemed more courteous. If I stopped for any reason - in the days before cellphones - it would be only a matter of minutes before a trucker pulled off to offer his help. Back then, we just weren’t afraid of much, especially truck drivers. They were always gallant! They probably had daughters my age. Nowadays, I get that truckers have crazy schedules and mandatory rest hours, also pulling off the interstate is also so hazardous because of heavier traffic, and 4-wheel drivers are more distracted now. Which brings me to the next thing: 4. A BIG problem over the road is misuse of the left lane. Tbh I think most truckers, young and older, pretty much stick to the right lane, except to pass, as they should. But MANY 4-wheel drivers were not taught the same rule. They sit out there, at or below the speed limit, and the problem applies not only to regular people but to police as well. Unbelievable how some drivers will bottleneck traffic and be oblivious to the problems, including being potentially dangerous, they cause. I’m no speed demon and never have been. It’s just that traffic flows best when it flows like it’s supposed to. So I’m going to close this very lengthy post by saying how much you truckers who drive safely are appreciated. My husband’s dad was a truck driver in the 60s and 70s. Sometimes I’ll see an accident scene with an 18-wheeler involved. My second thought (my first is always a prayer) is “I bet a 4-wheeler had something to do with it.” I see how car drivers do - they don’t realize you have a blind spot and so car drivers: if you can’t see the truck driver in his/her side mirror then THEY CAN’T SEE YOU. Car drivers, use your turn indicators when changing lanes! And give the trucker PLENTY OF ROOM! They cannot stop on a dime! And be courteous to truckers. Don’t cut back in front of them. If a truck passes you, it’s always nice to flick your lights to signal them when it’s safe to get back over in front of you, especially when the highway is pretty crowded. Sorry this is so long. I just now hugged my grown son as he departs - he’s a truck driver too❤️

@MRO You forgot to mention that Chevy and Dodge stopped making police vehicles because frankly, the Crown Vic outplayed them. By the end, the Crown Vic was by far, the best Police vehicle ever made. Now, while I agree that the Dodge's an Chevrolet's were faster, that's all they were. For crying out loud, when Dodge decided to get back into the police vehicle market, they forgot that it might be important to put a key hole on the passenger side front door. Oh, it was a blast walking a handcuffed suspect around to the driver side and immediately adjacent to speeding traffic so you could open the driver side front door and hit the unlock. Not to mention, the Dodge's needed full brakes every 8,000 miles, the driver's compartment was too cramped and you couldn't see jack out the back window (way too many blind spots). Then there's Chevy, which also stopped making police vehicles because they just sucked at it. The Caprice's, while fast, had major electrical problems, they went through motor mounts every 10,000 miles regularly, regular transmission problems, and they were way too small........but yep, they were fast (that's it). As far as the Tahoe goes, forget it, 85 MPH and she shakes like an out of balance clothing dryer. Now the Crown Victoria. There was no place I could not take that car, over medians, through mud, dirt, hills, rocks, railroad tracks, etc. and she got the job done. I never lost anyone in a pursuit driving a Crown Vic. and even though she topped at 130, it was fast enough, plus she handled amazing. The majority of cops today, when asked was the best police vehicle they've ever drive n was, you will likely hear "CROWN VIC". It was the best all-around police car ever made. That's not to say that I didn't like the 1990 Caprice, she was awesome, then they brought out the WHALE, forget about it. It was like driving a boat in high seas. Today's Chargers on not much better and once again, having been outsold by the Ford Police Interceptor SUV (the V-6 eco-boost hauls a$$), Chevrolet took the caprice off the table......again, left with the Tahoe, which is roomy, but a police vehicle it is not.

I agree. And because of the high odds of that, I've always been an advocate of deadly force being used against anyone fleeing in a vehicle. -- Wild guessing, I'd say one time in 20 to one time in 50, an innocent person is maimed or killed when a P.O.S. runs. -- And the real kicker? The added charge if "fleeing" is usually a fairly minor charge. - It should be at least months in prison for that alone, factoring in the extreme danger it poses to the public.
@AureliusR

@@2ManyNamesTaken So, Mr Expert, what should they have done in this case? You cannot safely PIT a car at 105mph. Anything above 70mph is an absolute no. You can't shoot them, there's way too many other cars and people around. One stray bullet hits a kid and suddenly it's the cops who killed someone and not the criminal. Spike strips are the best option. If they were wanted for something less than homicide they would have backed off and allowed the aerial unit to track them, but that wasn't an option here. So again, what's your genius solution?

All the troopers were trying to do was let them know their gas door wasn't closed all the way. But obviously those criminals knew it was partially opened and intentionally drove around anyway making themselves a public nuisance. This is a lesson to everyone, make sure your gas door is closed before you pull out of the gas station or you too could end up lying face down on the pavement. And that is terribly uncomfortable especially if it's an extremely hot or cold day.

Rhelir We only train to use the PIT at speeds of 45 MPH or less (unless they changed the training since I learned it). I don’t think the speeds ever dropped to that for long enough to implement it safely. The last thing you want is to get sucked into the PIT and dragged with the suspect car into a wall at a 80 MPH impact speed (Dale Earnhardt style) Furthermore, with murder suspects it’s a pretty good assumption they’re armed and you don’t want to end up stopped door-to-door next to them with them shooting at you from less than 5 ft away while you’re still buckled in and trying to duck and draw. Cruisers are tight with all the junk they have mounted in them...so basically you’d be a sitting duck. Tactically, that is a horrible situation to be in. Also, if you PIT someone at 80 MPH well outside of our guidelines, and there turns out to be a smashed child dead on impact in the backseat...guess who loses their job, house and has to live with the death of a child for the rest of their life. The only time I’d PIT at speeds that fast is if it was a deadly force situation. However, pursuits rarely rise to that level...this one included. If they were actively shooting at the officers and sending rounds down the highway towards other motorists...well it’s a shit situation, but then we’d have to take out the car as quickly as possible by any means necessary and take risks that normally we would not take otherwise.

P71 vs Grand Marquis. Ya wanna know a bit of irony between the two? The Grand Marquis has the 4.6L V8 known for the Vic, marquis and Mustang of the same generation. However, the Grand Marquis is on a similar tune to the polices P71 tune used in the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. We basically just watched a police car chase a police car. - Edit: big difference is the Intake. The P71 Tune itself relies on a higher flow intake, manifold and throttle body. The better the airflow, the more efficiently the 4.6L was able to preform. A perk of the 4.6L. That, and better exhaust flow. The reason I say it’s a similar tune is because Ford got away with enhancing the 4.6L performance in the 2006 Grand Marquis and up. Instead of the 210hp of the civilian Crown Vic, there was a near 260hp, close enough to the P71 to give the police a run for their money.

OSP uses Dodge Chargers, Chevy Tahoe and Ford Explorers. These were Chargers chasing down the Grand Marquis. If you google Police Chase Trotwood murder you'll see the aftermath with the chase vehicles lined up behind after the wreck and subsequent feeding frenzy. Now the question is were they packing 3.6 Pentastars or 5.7 Hemis and will grandma get her low mileage cream puff back?

They used to have Crown Vics as well. In the early days, the vehicles were charcoal black with the door emblem being highly reflective. In the mid-70s, they went to the Grand Marquis and they were white. Just about the same time, they had their light bar on the hood of the vehicle which they called Liberty Lightbars because they were red, white, and blue. My father was a trooper for 21+ years. In 1998, when I returned to Ohio from my career in the military, I was shocked to see they had gone to Chargers (WTF!!!). The OSHP were (are) known for three things: 1. Their uniforms. 2. Their vehicles. 3. They're badass.

Many departments forbid the use of a pit maneuver unless the fleeing suspect is entering a heavily populated area.Its a dangerous maneuver that can get the officers/suspects/bystanders killed. Its only used if there is clear and present danger. So say if this was in a town and not a highway, they probably would have pitted him if they could create a safe opportunity.
