Damn that's tragic. I had my Ls in both NSW and the ACT. In the ACT you do a multi hour course over two days before you get your Ls where they spend most of the time reinforcing the potencial consequences of reckless driving. This included showing documentaries about people who had ruined their own lives and the lives of others, including killing friends, through their reckless driving. Those docos were hard to watch even for a desensitised 18 year old male which I was at the time. They have stayed in my mind till now a decade later. ACT does this course in lieu of the 120 hours behind the wheel imposed in NSW and frankly I think it is a much better use of time. Most people fake a bunch of their hours in NSW anyways. Sitting someone down in a small group away from their mates and showing them the real tragedy and horror that can occur on the road is much more impactful.

What I ended up doing was driving by myself around the back streets of Wollongong without my Ls, hoping I wouldn't get nicked. I was in a box truck as a passenger once going down the freeway near Geelong. We were in the far right lane and I realized from the muted Tom Tom (this was in '09) that we were about to miss our exit. As I realized the driver was sketchy (I only just started working there), I just thought "better let it go, it will quietly recalculate after we miss the exit and nobody will know". Then my idiot PhD American middle passenger yelled "YOU'RE GOING TO MISS THE EXIT". Well, this Tourette's/Asperger's driver cut across three lanes without even looking and a B-Double doing 100 k narrowly missed us. Called the other guy a f'ing idiot, but he was the f'ing idiot who - like many - don't know what the merging rules are. its a pretty common intersection for people to get confused and alot of drivers make assumptions. to me it looks like the haval was trying to get to the servo or hungry jacks to the left of our perspective but could have easily just got confused at the first round about and ended up heading toward the second round about when their aim was to head toward kfc that is in front of our perspective which required going right at the first round about they entered. the forester would have seen the haval go far over to the left having seen it come from the first round about and assumed they wont be going all the way around as they could have just gone around the first round about. if the forester would have waited to see if the haval went straight rather than going right on the off chance they were heading to the servo the white jeep that slips on past when the forester stops would have already been in the round about and the forester would have to give way to all traffic entering from the right of it which at that intersection which at that intersection is almost never ending. of course the forester had to give way there but unfortunately a mix of poor design of that whole complex of round abouts and complacency are the main cause of that one

Looking in his side mirror, he probably thought he initially had room. he didn’t expect the other car to speed past him to try to overtake, when he had started the lane merge. Then again, by the time he said ‘dude’ he should have taken evasive action to avoid the collision, when he saw it beside his car. If I was in the car behind, I would let him make the change whether he was in the right or wrong.

@@heredownunder Yes, avoidable by both drivers, but bottom line is the dash cam vehicle / driver had time to react and avoid even after saying 'dude'. There was enough time and space, even at that point. Defensive driving and giving way to those at fault is usually better than dealing with insurance and repairs, but it's clear who was in the wrong here. 19:20: It would have been helpful to be able to see the traffic behind the DC driver here. While legally the DC driver is required to give way (since his lane ends with a dashed line), I wonder if the SUV vehicle deliberately accelerated to "claim their right of way" so to speak? If the SUV deliberately accelerated, then the SUV created an unsafe situation. From a safety point of view, I feel it's always better to let the vehicle in front in, whether a zip-merger or a left or right lane ends scenario.

Recognising a bunch of places this week: - 6:56 Citylink on-ramp intersection at the start of Mt Alexander Rd. Driver is even more reckless than the clip makes them look - there's a tram stop and a bunch of pedestrian stuff just ahead. - 8:56 Ring Rd, but realistically you get the same thing at any offramp with confused drivers. Likewise 12:03 , which is a nearby offramp from the same Ring Road. - 9:50 Bulla Rd & Bell St exits: Genuinely confusing bit of road to navigate, though I'm guessing this driver was being chased from elsewhere. - 10:45 Bulla Rd roundabout: absolute nightmare to go through in pretty much any direction, honestly I'd cut the driver some slack there. - 15:09 Sunbury turnoff just outside Riddells Creek. From memory, DC's speed limit goes from 60 to 80 around about here (and then to 100 a little later). Not a good intersection to enter blindly.

Not quite right. Australia has two "merging" rules: 1. When changing lanes (as happened in this incident because the dash cam vehicle was crossing a broken line), the vehicle changing lanes MUST give way to any vehicle in the lane they want to enter. Does not matter whether their lane was ending or not. 2. When the line between two lanes simply disappears (usually preceded by a "Form 1 Lane" sign), then the vehicle behind MUST give way to the vehicle in front. Many drivers in Australia wrongly think that rule 2. applies for lane changes - it doesn't.
