I think it’s usually because the piece gets old and the old finish starts to look bad. Most people don’t know how to properly refinish it so they take the easy way out and paint it.

Beautiful work…just in case you are interested, in my youth (about 40-50 years ago 😨) in the North of England a settee was what we now would call a sofa or couch. Everyone had a settee in their living room (lounge) or Front room/Dining room (AKA posh room that only gets used when posh visitors come). Ahhh, those were the days when all you could hear on a Sunday was the church bells outside and the ticking clock on the mantle inside. No daytime TV (other than the test card) until after tea. 😊 That’s why I love your videos, they remind me of when life was a bit quieter….well that and the lovely work you do.
@silverwolf5735 Жыл бұрын
That's stunning. I much prefer being able to see the different colours, textures and shades of the individual pieces of wood. So much better than an over powering stain or dye that makes every piece of wood the same colour.

That's just beautiful, what a great piece! How somebody would paint over walnut is beyond me. Glad you brought it back to life! The clear Danish oil was the way to go, and the hide glue repair was also a good choice, hide glue doesn't show on oil or shellac finishes which is a bonus of using it. Great job and video 👏

Lovely result with the rich, warm finish. Minus the time spent repairing the cracks, how many hours did it take to remove all the paint, pick away at the nooks and crannies? Many decades ago, removed a lot of paint from a spindled chair. At some point, recall losing motivation, thinking 'Nobody will even notice this little bit.'

What a beautiful piece! Drexel makes some really fine furniture. My mother had a Derxel dining room set and some chairs that were awesome. Great job bringing it back. It's also interesting that the back rails appear to have different color tones. I wonder if it's because they were covered in paint for so long. Well done.

Very interesting! The walnut is super. I wonder if it was painted originally, because of the differences in the color of the wood. This might be a good project to try some of the wood toners that even out the finish.
@jimurrata6785 Жыл бұрын
I doubt Drexel would have used walnut under paint. It was likely sprayed with a toner to even out the finish. You're going to find species like gum, birch or beech under paint.

Wow, that's a thing of beauty! You could see the great shape even with the paint on it, but without the paint, it's absolutely gorgeous. I never understand why people paint lovely pieces of furniture - fine if they're cheap or damaged, but I hate it when they paint over perfectly good wood. It took a lot of effort (I wouldn't have had the patience), but it's worth it because it's now something to be proud of.

I run into cracks that are hard to glue often. I use a shop vac with a rag held over the end of the hose to pull glue into tighter joints. You can glue them without prying or opening joints and cracks that can cause more problems. Good job on the restoration!
