If you have low TPS, it feels like the game is in slow motion. You might see mobs moving slowly in a choppy way, if you lit TNT it's gonna disappear for a bit before exploding, and eating takes a lot longer than usual

fps lag, you know what it looks like. TPS lag, if you don't know what it looks like, you can still move around with high fps, but mobs and other things appear to delay or freeze and not move, or move in small increments, but their motion looks smooth.

tps is hugely important. i made ianxofours raid farm a few days ago and nearly died in my hardcore world due to vexes spawning even though i did everything right. this was because of the tps lagging causing the evokers to live long enough to spawn in a vex which took my totem even. my fix was to make two vex supressors which had evokers spawn in vexes which got caught in boats so evokers in the raid farm wouldnt be able to spawn vexes of their own

For anyone wondering why tps matters, 1 tick is basically 1 frame but for server calculations, the more things in the server, the longer it takes to pass 1 full tick

The only reason I knew what this was, is because of a modded playthrough I'm doing. If you've ever worked with Project E and the pedestal with a watch of flowing time than you know how laggy things can get. It speeds up ticks and gives tps lag really bad, but your frames are normally fine unless it's something like breaking a ton of blocks at a time, or anything to so with a lot of particles. Watch of flowing time is one of the most OP items in any mod for progression and I use them for practically everything. Speeding up my furnaces, using them on my solar panels to make them generate more power every second by about 10x, and even to speeding up plant growth in mystical agriculture, although a lot of this is usually disabled when mods have ProjectE for these very reasons, it can speed up progression in a modpack by WAYYYY too much.

tps is the physics, fps is the graphics they are independent, but if you’re on a laptop with integrated graphics it’s the same hardware handling both so they’ll be correlated on a server, the hardware is completely separate machines (client does graphics, server does physics) so there’s no correlation

Well, my computer is so weird that I have a 4th type of lag: the CPU 100% lag, when my cpu reaches 100%, even if I have 60FPS, my game starts to lag extremely but not like the FPS lag but a lag where you for example click the W and the character continues walking, and the keys take a lot of time to react and they continue, that lag is HORRIBLE!

I play on servers, and I get 3 types of lag: fps lag, ping lag (teleporting back, blocks I just broke rematerialising), and, the most common and horrifying one, what I like to call 'oh god, I'm jump sprinting towards lava and can't stop, and mashing the keyboard barely helps, no, please stop' lag. It also often comes with lower fps. If I do not touch my keyboard and wait for it to stop, it doesn't, but the fps get better again, and then I can stop it by pressing whatever key Minecraft thinks I am, which is usually w, but can be anything, including mouse buttons. Bringing up task manager sometimes helps, but usually not. Sometimes it just decides to freeze for a minute while I'm swimming and drown me too. :D
