Data Analyst Salary | 100k with No Experience | My Story // I had absolutely no experience when I started my path to becoming a data analyst. None of my friends were in this field and I really only had myself to push me and figure out what to learn. Over the course of the past 3 years I have learned more than I ever thought possible. I am now a data analyst at a Fortune 500 company making over 100k and it seems a bit surreal. I have a lot more aspirations for my career and I hold myself a little higher knowing I worked incredibly hard to be where I am now.

I took a Bootcamp program this March 2021, I learned 10 weeks of excel, SQL, and Tableau, and 3 months later, I found a job paying 75k + 10% bonus, it doubled my salary as I used to be a staff accountant. I think I'm extremely lucky that I'm able to find an entry-level job with such great compensation. I live on the west coast.

Very similar to a path I'm attempting to achieve! I graduated with a master's degree in exercise science in 2017. Yes, a boneheaded move on my part. Why? Exercise science is considered a useless degree by many and I'm probably one of many that are living proof. I made 16k in 2018, and a whopping 18k in 2019! I've had had seven jobs the past three years, with five of them paying at or near minimum wage. Another job was personal training. I could not sell my way out of a paper bag to make that gig work. I also had a part time teaching job at a community college but was not selected for rehire the following year. Now, I have been self-teaching myself the skills needed to get into data science for the past year. My goal is to gain an entry level data analyst job so I can build my skills more and put myself through college again to pursue a quantitative degree. Gaining an entry level data analyst job where I make even 40k would be like winning the lottery! Earning 100k, I might probably feel like I died and went to heaven. Why? I will be able to pay off my 100k student loan debt and start living life!

I'm not sure about sources, but the whole point of a project is to show how skilled you are and that you're able to do what you need to do to be a Data Analyst. If you can create a few projects and create a website with those projects, you can then put the link on your resume.

There is a huge market for people with in-depth clinical knowledge and also data science experience. I work with a lot of people in that intersection and it's definitely a specific skill (and they get compensated well for it). I would stick in healthcare as your domain if you are still interested in it. People with your experience can get jobs as Clinical Data Scientist/Analysts quite quickly. If you're learning Data Science try to pick up some NLP - that's pretty big for this field.

Would you say getting sql certified as a recent college grad would help me get my foot in the door for a healthcare analyst job?
@AlexTheAnalyst
@AlexTheAnalyst 3 жыл бұрын
Javy Alvarado It May, but it probably won’t make too big of difference. There are other fields where certifications are more important such as Data Engineering, Data Architecture, etc.. For Data Analysts it’s just not as important - it’s the skills that make the difference. I am not against becoming SQL certified at all - it definitely won’t hurt - but it wouldn’t be my top priority. A good Portfolio will make a big difference as well as knowing the basics well such as SQL, Python, Tableau/Power BI. Hope that helps!

Where can I go to practice SQL - could you recommend sites with good exercises? I think I'm more of the 'learn by doing' type when it comes to learning programming, rather than go through 30 hour Udemy courses which I don't have patience for. I also like looking at others' finished/correct code for exercises and seeing what they did, and manipulate my code bit-by-bit until I get it right. Thanks!

srujan00 haha I feel you on that although I’ve had to push through a lot of Udemy courses when I was first starting out. I’m not sure I know anything that’s fits your description, but a few places I would start looking are W3School, Khan Academy, and Codeacademy. I personally would look at Khan Academy first. I learned a lot from them. Sorry I can’t be of more specific for what you’re looking for.

@@AlexTheAnalyst No worries. I 'could' do Udemy, but the pace is pretty slow with most of it: 5-7 minute videos for something I could read in 2-3 paragraphs instead. And many of the lessons don't really tell you much in those 7 mins. Yeah, I've used w3 and some Khan, also SQL ZOO. There's a course on Udemy from "Colt Steele" that was good, a bootcamp for MySQL. But as you know, that differs from T-SQL. I also found a Russian site where you're given a scenario to try to output with SQL code. I'll try to find that one for you if I can.
@AlexTheAnalyst

@@srujan00 That would be awesome! I will say what I did to get to the next level in SQL was to actually take a dataset and put it into SSMS and start to analyze it, build views, build stored procedures, and connect it to a data vis software to create dashboards. Walking through that whole process was a real learning experience when I was first starting out.
