I am data engineer and i think data scientist is fancy title started by bootcampers and colleges to attact money. They are no way deserve to be called scientist. An engineer or analyst or even developer is fine bcz our lot of work overlaps with them. Its just hyped fancy trend.

I am bit apprehensive when someone cal. themself as Data Scientist 1) One they aren't inventing 2) Secondly they are using existing methodologies to do their jobs which produce results 3) Lastly it would be better if they say they are data science professional or data science enthusiast But anyway people do what they want.. For that there is some amount of research that goes into the data in hand. Secondly the position is called that in industry, you or I cannot change that.

Yeah most of the courses require you to have some coding background. Do look into python as it is widely used in data science and is relatively easy to learn
