Thank you very much! This is the exact video I was looking for. I have recently started my internship and as you say we do need to learn some deploying technologies as well. I have a question. When do you feel that you are read for an actual job ? How long should one intern and get ahead with the transition? Any tips?
@datawithrez
@datawithrez 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome 😊.. To be honest with you, I don't think there is really a time that you will feel very ready. Especially when we are starting out, there's so much to learn. So do not wait for the time to feel ready, do it even with uncertainties because you will learn it during the job and companies understand this except if they are really looking for the senior ones :) I did internship for 1.3 years but 20 hrs per week after that I got full time. I suggest don't be limited with the experience, if there's an opportunity that you match with, go for it even if you're a bit uncertain :)

Hey Rez...thanks for the video and that was quite informative. I would like to hear your perspective on getting to know the German language. Is it really necessary for us to know german as a Data analyst / scientist to interact with the stakeholders?? Or the Germans will communicate with us in English? What's your take and experience on this.
@datawithrez
@datawithrez 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Sri, I really recommend learning the Language. My company is International, it is fine but most of your colleagues will be german, sometimes during break or unofficial meetings they speak german. So if you don't know it, you'll be left out a bit ;) For talking with stakeholders, they speak english if the mode is set in english but sometimes, some also don't. So it depends on the company's setting. Learning the language is very important for your daily activities too! ☺️

At university you will be fine, almost everybody here speaks english and everybody will be fine with you being from another country and not speaking german. But if you live and work here for many years you should definitly learn the language, even though most people in IT can speak english, it is frowned upon if people refuse to learn the language.

applying for jobs is really hard and do not think that the problem is you, sometimes, companies really just don't look at CVs long even though you are perfectly fit. I read somewhere that on average, recruiters spend around 6-8 seconds on the cv which is not a lot. Do you have projects/portfolios in your cv or past Data science/analytics experience? I think you should really highlight those. In which areas are you applying too?

@datawithrez
@datawithrez 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Zowlex, I really understand this. It's very difficult to even land interview these days despite your credentials. May I know your background before that? I know a lot of people still looking for jobs. I believe CV should be more important since it's the first thing they should notice. On average recruiters spend 6-8 seconds looking at your cv before they decide and this is not a lot of time. It's only my opinion but I have tried hiring before, and it helps my attention if the cv is catchy. but I am not an expert recruiter, however this is something that would at least catch attention. it also helps if your cv is easy to understand but at the same time stays technical. people don't like to read very long CVs as well. with portfolios it only supports your expertise and it shows your personality as someone dedicated and willing to learn.
@datawithrez
@datawithrez 2 жыл бұрын
for big companies like Allianz, sometimes applicants for a job position goes above 1000. so it's a lot of competition and I believe they also use algorithms for this. so perhaps try to match your cv to the job description as well. this might help.

Hey Rez, really informative video overall! This really helps in getting a better understanding of the expectations being laid out for these jobs. I would like to know a few more things in this context if that's okay. Amongst the candidates applying for the jobs, are the ones holding masters in data science degrees getting an edge in the selection process? Or are their profiles being completely disregarded? Also, How is the data science job market like in Germany? Is it highly competitive with only a select few getting the jobs? Are the immigrants being treated any different while screening for interviews? Hope the list of questions is not too intimidating :). It would really be helpful if you could offer your inputs on this. Thanks!
@datawithrez
@datawithrez 3 жыл бұрын
Q: are the ones holding masters in data science degrees getting an edge in the selection process? Hello Dhulipala, Thanks for the questions :) Yes it's a bit long but it's okay. haha To answer if graduate degree matters, most of the people who have a Data Scientist title holds a higher degree such as Masters and PhDs (check out this article: www.stitchdata.com/resources/the-state-of-data-science/). This is not necessarily required but in my observation, the data science jobs I looked at mostly requires these titles especially if the tasks are more industry specific (ie, healthcare, finance, etc). Q: Is it highly competitive with only a select few getting the jobs? Are the immigrants being treated any different while screening for interviews? I can really say that Data Science is very competitive. As I've said earlier, they mostly require higher technical degrees and a lot of experience. For immigrants, it's more competitive especially if you don't speak german. In general, there are more German jobs than English, and as an immigrant if you don't know that language you are only limited to these English jobs (i.e., international companies). As a female Asian :D I don't feel any discrimination in the selection process. I am completely aware that I am competing with mostly guys as well but I don't see any issues here, so far :)

Hi @Regon Bai, I think at that time I thought it was necessary since I don’t have the technical background like comp. Sci, or IT. but I am now going into the direction that bootcamp is enough if you have a stem background and learn the rest while working. but in your case, I have a feeling you will not find it hard to penetrate the market. Right now, for 1 data science job posting there are 100 or more applications, that’s how saturated it is currently but they always prioritise people with 2+ years of ds experience. For international companies, only learning english is okay. But it’s really advantageous to have the german language.

Yes and No 😂 For an entry level position. This video was 2 year ago. Also, prices here in Germany are not that high. Personally, I can still save around 45% of my net income after basic needs + leisure budget (holidays, etc). At the end, I think it depends on your lifestyle too.

You should include that when you speak English about Germany. So, people don't get illusions about the German market, like I did once. I would bet the competition is way higher for English-speaking jobs. Since most people speak English and the Germans who want to become data scientists speak English anyway.
@datawithrez
@datawithrez 3 жыл бұрын
You're right. It's a question I was asked all the time as well, I'll include it in one of my vids. If you only speak english you are only limited to mostly international companies, but some small comp. also adjusts, most of the time they will send you to german courses if you only speak english.

Hey, I think IT support jobs are far off from Analyst jobs. Although you have the technical skills but the challenge is convincing them that you can do analyst jobs. what is your status in databases, BI tools? how good is your data knowledge? I think asking these questions will give you an estimate on your chance because there's also a lot of competition. You can maybe look at job descriptions in analyst jobs in Germany and see how much you match :)
