My parent bought their house in a small country town in South Oz for 40k in the late 90's sold it in late 2000s for 400k and is currently on the market for 1.2m. House and town didn't really change much to this day. Most "home owners" here don't actually own their house, the bank does.

The statement that "home owners" don't actually own their house doesn't really mean much in current times. Currently 35% have a mortgage, 31% are owned outright and the remainder are rented out as investment properties. Given the market and the policies that surround home ownership, home owners where the mortgage is still active, the bank continues to have significantly less equity in the property than the mortgagee. An example is that if someone purchased a Sydney house a mere 6 years ago, with a 20% deposit, the bank held the majority share in the property. But with property growth, if the mortgagee paid just normal repayments during that time, house prices have increase so much that equity on the property has increased so much, than the bank on average would own less than 50% of the property. And the home owner holds all the cards when it comes to selling; not the bank. Selling this property allows the home owner to take out all the newly gained equity with the bank having absolutely no claim to it. In most cases of recent times, the equity earned is significantly more than the interest paid. Unless the person selling is re-entering the market (which they often are), it's a tax free way to wealth that is the reason that Australians are considered by the large Swiss Bank, Credit Suisse, to have the highest median wealth (which is really the measure of the middle class), than any other country. -- In the case of your parents, they used this system to their advantage. By the time they sold their house they would have earned a lot of tax free equity in the house that was paid for by the next. Really a ponzy scheme with something to show for it. And it's a scheme only supported by the fact we're lacking a lot of housing.

@@inodesnet You don't own the asset until you pay it off, all the other BS we all know, wow, what an insight. pay back 1.5 million on a 300k house over 40 years. lol, Ponzi scheme alright, just not the way you think.

My parents bought a house in Thirroul tops northern Illawarra in 1978 for 39k when Thirroul was considered too far from Wollongong city at the time and cheap housing. Thirroul is now the most expensive trendy suburb outside of Sydney with our old house demolished and replaced by a huge monstrosity last on the market for $3.8m. Good indication of house prices here from my point of view. My parents purchased the house i grew up in(a weatherboard 1920s build) in 1974 for $13,000aud and they sold it it 1990 for $63,000aud, it was then sold in 1992 for $70,000aud and then again in 1995 for $50,000aud taking a $20,000 loss and then again in 1998 for $85,000aud and then someone actually kept it until 2009 before selling for $300,000aud. It's now as of today got a price guide of $850,000 - $899,000aud in a town that while growing up had a population of only 4,900(now around 10,000).

The Nullarbor was once a shallow sea bed that, over 10s of millions of years, accumulated a deep layer of limestone formed from the calcareous skeletons of ancient sea creatures. This seabed was uplifted by crustal movements to become world's largest single exposure of limestone bedrock. The theory is that it was always pretty flat, being seabed, and as that region has remained geologically stable since that time, it has remained that way. There are cave systems in the limestone though.

What you should have done were view dates 9 months forward from these dates and other big events and festivals (e.g. Woodstock, Superbowl) to get a true picture of when why certain birthdates are more common than others . . . and as per "Snickers Commercials" here in Australia the saying . . . And as it is not too big you can hire a campervan and drive round the country in three weeks depending on your itinerary and get to see all the popular sites. It is truly spectacular. Despite my partner and I both working full time, we're unable to get out of the rent trap and any savings have been vastly outpaced by the explosion in house costs. As an example, the place we're renting now was purchased for 317,000 6 years ago and is now worth 750,000. Also because of the recent interest rate rises and bank reforms, borrowing power is significantly reduced. It's becoming an unachievable dream unless you can find work in the country towns (talking 2-4 hours out of the city) where there are still achievable properties for 200-300K

The interesting side note to the foreign born in Australia statistic relates to US ex-pats. Generally speaking the US (like Australia) is an immigrant country, as opposed to an emigrant country. It's large population compared to anywhere else, makes this statistic possible. In the case of every given country (excluding notable tax havens), the US has more citizens from that given country living in the US, than US citizens living in that given country. So for example, there are more British living in the US than Americans living in Britain. There are more Japanese living in the US than Americans living in Japan. There are more French living in the US, then Americans living in France. There is only one exception. There are more Americans living in Australia than Australians living the the US. This is despite the fact that Australia is also the only country to have access to the special working visa, the E-3. A lot of countries have tried to gain access, but it is completely restricted to Australians and is significantly easier with less restrictions than the TN visa offered to Mexicans and Canadians (i.e. spouse of Australian E-3 holder can work in the US regardless of nationality, TN spouse cannot work). This makes Australians the easiest foreigners to hire for US companies without the need for complexities of sponsorship.

“Home buyers from China are stepping up their push for a slice of the Australian housing dream, racking up $3.4 billion worth of approved residential real estate purchases over the 2022-23 year, up more than 40 per cent on the previous year. The Foreign Investment Review Board’s June quarter report, released on Friday afternoon, shows the Chinese appetite for residential real estate is accelerating, with 826 approvals granted in the June quarter alone, worth $1.1 billion. The overall Chinese interest is even larger yet, given that a further $600 million worth of approvals were granted for those buyers from Hong Kong, which is counted separately and came a distant second in the overall tally of foreign buyers. Home buyers from Vietnam ($400 million), Taiwan ($300 million) and India ($200 million) were also among the top ten for 2022-23. More broadly, the US remains the biggest single source of commercial investment in Australia with $34.5 billion approved proposals in the last financial year. But the FIRB report also shows just how quickly Japan is expanding its ambitions, winning $11.7 billion in approvals in the June quarter alone.” One can only shake their head as to why the government allows this when we have a housing crises.

Here in Newcastle, Australia, our UV hits 11-13 during the summer consistently. Fun fact, the way the body deals with UV is to convert it into heat (via melanin and is additional to the IR absorption) which the body then deals with by sweating and increasing respiration rate. An easy way to feel cooler is by using sunscreen which blocks UV by other mechanisms and therefore stops the need for the body to convert it to additional heat.

The eggs in Australia are getting more expensive as well. This is because the chicken industry here is changing going from battery layers to having a lot more free range or organic layers. Still some farms that do what call caged eggs eventually that will likely be stopped completely.

The highest UV usually occurs on mountain tops due to the thinner atmosphere. The highest ever recorded was on top of a volcano in Bolivia at over 43. That must be have been deadly to be exposed to, burn in a few minutes territory.

Its more than "a little more" lol $US763,000 United States Dollar equals $AU1,200,328.71 . The average home price in AU is about a million for a liveable family home. You can get units or apartments cheaper, but they're still crazy expensive.

See if you can find a UV rating for a place called Port Hedland, a little town on the Northwest coast of Australia. The temp up there would start getting into the mid 30s about now, rising to the high 30s to low 40s by the end of November and staying like that until the beginning of March. Strangely, that time of year is also called the wet season... but we hardly got any rain, except when a cyclone came through.

@@IWrocker No need to apologise, Ian. I can show you a dozen different maps, presumably showing the same thing like relief or topography, and they all look very different. Some look like they've used a logarithmic scale which distorts the numbers in order to highlight the differences. As for vegetation, a satellite image of the country will how three consecutive La Ninas and an abundance of rain have transformed the entire continent. If you compare it with an image taken at the end the last El Nino, which brings drier conditions, you will see big a difference. I think I've said this before, maps are only a snapshot and belie the true nature of a dynamic system. I appreciate your interest in Australian geography and natural history, so keep up the great work!

Interestingly enough, although there are approx 100,000 Americans living in Australia there are also approx 100,000 Aussies living in America. Given that America has 10 times the population of Australia this is somewhat surprising. I guess with America being the land of opportunity i shouldn't be so surprised, but still, the disparity is surprising...

The latest from the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (10/22) for proportion of total forest area by state - Qld 39%, Vic 6%, NSW 15%. These are based on figures supplied to the Commonwealth by the States. There is also a definition of what constitutes a forest. Some of the high country, for example, being grassy/swampy/rocky plains and peaks, doesn't qualify as forest.

the answer to your comment how to make a home cheaper & more available would be to halt all immigration for ten years, but that would be a very difficult process to implement due to the existing waiting list for those who have already applied to migrate, that is already a three year wait at the present time & for others, even longer up to I believe five years for family reunions.
