The abundance of American car tuning styles and love to the auto-modification in this country amazes many gearheads, who live abroad. Americans create many custom cars, usually modifying several systems separately or go about all of them a bit.
Suspension lowering, engine swaps and adding custom rims are probably the most popular modification types but the representatives of the hi-riser culture take their main customization type of the extreme.
If on the street you see a flashy car with incredibly large rims (22in-30in), then you are probably looking at a donk or at least a hi-riser. Automotive experts understand hi-riser as an American-made sedan with extensive modifications made to the suspension and the car’s body, which enable the installation of ridiculously large rims (they look especially unusual if the design has see-through sections).
Hi-risers are being subdivided into several categories depending on the model of the selected American cars. The customized 70’s Chevy Impala is labeled as a donk, 80’s Chevrolet Caprice with very large rims is known as a box and the tuned 90’s Pontiac is referred to as a bubble.

So far we have already reviewed such automotive styles, which are popular within the US:
- the sleepers;
- slab culture vehicles with custom swangas;
- lowriders with hydraulic suspension, which allows them to dance;
- and many more to be added soon.
Thanks for your time and please share your thoughts about these vehicle tuning choices.
