Think narcissism is just about being self absorbed and the superficial good looks? Think again. Narcissism is a deeply dark disorder that can tarnish relationships, careers and your own individual self. Think you're a narcissist? Or think you're dating one? I speak with Sam Vaknin, author of Malignant Self-love: Narcissism Revisited and a twice diagnosed cerebral narcissist, to delve into the deeply dark world of narcissism and learn about the traits!
DURING THIS EPISODE, SAM AND I TALK ABOUT:
The narcissist traits: Do you blame others for your misfortunes? Are you being hyper sensitive, always feeling slighted by what someone has said or done?
The different narcissist types.... those who use intelligent versus those who use sexuality to get what they want
Traits of the women who date narcissists.... has he professed his love for you on your first date? Wants to be exclusive on the second date? Plans to have children by the third?

My ex is bipolar manic depressive but in retrospect a narcissist as well . I was a gullible empathic codependent. I looked at him and myself and saw what we were . I divorced him and moved . He put a camper in my driveway and stalked me for years . Finally a judge made him leave me alone. I’m so free now . It’s like a boulder lifted off my psyche .

To put a clinical name to his behaviour was one of the most liberating feelings I've had. I'm surprised my head hasn't exploded with all the nodding with agreement I have done with all these enlightening videos about narcissism. I knew there was something wrong, at times I questioned myself as he blamed me for his cheating. Now the love bombing, the robotic personality, the non empathy, the cruelty, the way he would smile when he told me something upsetting, the need for constant adulation and admiration from dating sites, from work colleagues, from strangers on the streets, the discard, the hoovering all makes perfect sense. Thank you Sam for putting so much effort in researching this condition, for the no contact rule, for giving us the word supply for this condition, the list goes on. I'm not alone in this and for that I truly am grateful.

Scary. I was with a somatic.First year great, second was hell. Sad part was I did see warning signs after a couple of dates when he thought someone was picking a fight in the bar with him after a concert. There was no one there. He was hallucinating. I told him I was done and he had a sit down with me, and said he's had a cocaine problem for years and I was a good reason to stop. He started the love bombing. Jewelry, dinners left at my door, travel, concerts. I went away one weekend at the 9 month mark to see my kids.I don't know what the heck went on when I was away but he flipped the switch over night. But never went away. I became a once or twice a week date. I kept telling him to go away and he'd creep back in after a couple of weeks sending me youtube videos at like 3 in the morning of songs. Up doing coke no doubt. Loner type, quiet, family construction business which enables him. Just works there. His brother runs it. He lost his place in the business due to his ways. Went to reform school in high school, dropped out of college, went to rehab, that didn't last, in jail for a month for drug possession. Has lived in the world of Grateful Dead concerts for years. Tethered to his parents still big time!! Has his own house(builders) but catering to his parents all the time. We went to Florida and they are down there 6 months a year so we spent the weekend there, went to Miami Mon thru Fri. and returned to the parents the following weekend because heaven forbid we miss Sunday dinner. Says his father didn't pay attention to him or come to his games, but yet he's the kid that never cut the cord. Got married, cheated and the ex has given him minimal contact. In spite of that, she has been drawn back into the harem herself. Never has had a boyfriend since. 17 years. What a bizarre world I found myself in. Now I look at him like a mentally ill, zombie. But it really does screw with your mind. If I had walked away at 9 months when the trouble started, I would have been better off. The second year of back and forth is what screwed with my head. You are longing for the return of the good times which never come back.

I like the metaphor 'alien', makes sense as they are wired completely differently to the human experience. Family or origin subsequent relationships....after a while you realise they are not who they are in real terms after invested yourself. It is a scary place when the mask falls. I can't recommend Sam's work enough, plain and clear work which has opened up answers for many people. And you are so so right about dating sites, it's a hunting ground.

I dated a narc once .. it was a roller coaster ride from hell.. he would sabotage our dates by showing up late (while waiting in the car and watching how I act and to see how soon I left). You are always guilty for his problems. The wedding proposal came on the 2nd date.. and he offered his last girlfriends ring. Sicko from hell made me give him tons of cash and left me broke and homeless. He took me for everything and left.

I dated him for exactly 2 months, my very first narc that I was aware of. From day one he told me he has nothing to give me. So I thought casual would be fine but then he started demanding my attention and texting me at midnight threatening to walk. I told him to walk, I have no time to beg any man to stay. Our conversations were crazy, one minute praise one minute putting me down, one minute saying this another the exact opposite. And he loved texts. He always implied I could never leave and he admitted he is fucked up. That fooled me for a while because I though narcissist don't admit they are fucked. But he called me crazy alot and he had too much drama it was exhausting. He even started taking my a identity and talk like me. He made me start liking him alot and every time I said it, he just laughed at my face and The last time he was so loving and sensitive he gaslighted me just a day after. And told me he really can't be with me. I was ok then. I move on and find someone better for me. It took only three days for him to come back. You know the silent treatment was now obvious. But I thought he gaslighted me he should not come back like he does with a stupid move. But I knew he would come back like always. That's when I chose to tell him to never ever contact me again. Apparently I am carrying his child. Too complicated but I never want to put my child in that psychos life. ahhh life!

So many topics in this video! The most important to me, however, was just accepting that she was a narcissist without understanding. As Sam said, you must be one to know one. I always seek to understand, to perfect, to find the answers, no matter how hard I have to work at it to do so. With her, after so much emotional capital was invested before I understood what she was, I tried even harder, believing I could "fix" her by loving her. I was wrong, so wrong. I only made myself a bigger source of supply. I learned to accept the unknowable and move on. It was that or perish. It took 4 1/2 years, but she's long gone and I'm wiser for it. Now I can spot 'em a mile away.

@sam I had the exact feeling you described of something being off with my ex about 2 weeks into the relationship. He was indeed robotic and fake. I even gave him the nick name of RJD2 for a bit. I tried to break up with him but he made it seem like this relationship meant the world to him and he seemed devastated so I went with it for a year!. He did seem to love animals though and had gotten 2 cats and he became obsessed and developed a love and attachment to the cats that he would display in front of me as to make me jealous. As he had at that point become unemotional and unaffectionate towards me. This was very bizarre but he used to say "they will never leave me". So the part about the animals would not fit him as he would put those cats before any human being, even before his own family.

I thought of myself as some kind of hybrid narcissist, I have had some of the characteristics in the past but I have many of the characteristics of an empathy and enabler. My main narcissistic attribute was my unending need for attention from people and the public. Yet on the other hand I was an enabler and sympathized with people to the degree that I would place everyone's needs and wants above mine. A strange combination of traits.

Sam is brilliant, this man sounds uneducated in this topic and it's odd how most men think women are narcissists while there are many but most are men, which explains the state of the world. My mother is a narcissist as is my father an inversed co-dependent. Men never like to take responsibility for the fact that it's their gender that has messed up the planet, that they are still in control and hate women for wanting equal pay except when paying our bills. Hopefully this show host will go a lot deeper into this study than simply using this platform as a discussion to get him attention.

I have had interactions with two narcissists. One was very successful in hacking my computer, waiting 2 months, and then taking money and chatlogs, changing them, etc. I tried to call the police about internet terrorism, but since it didnt involve money, and all of the past behaviour she bragged of, including identity theft, and saying she would destroy my life. Of course no one else saw that face of hers. I seemed to be the crazy one. the result of this was the loss of a bf, leaving the internet, and going to an intensive outpatient program for 2 years. Ironically the sociopath that I met there, would be very charming and inconsistant. but i didnt think about it. He was there for depression. He manipulated situations including getting my roommate out of the house, and taking my 4000 camera. Of course, he was never seen in the program again.

Dr Sam: I am so thankful here, I think I have figured out the term that has been wrong with me for years now "Cognitive Distortion" I need to snap out of this thinking, some how and some way..I have ALWAYS had a low self esteem, my entire life and I end up with someone in a relationship who treats me very badly, and I end up staying for some reason or another (and also maybe some trauma bonding going on there)..... well, I'm tired of this being treated badly and now I just need to work on myself. Now I have somewhere to get started from, it's called "Cognitive Distortion"....wow, thankyou....!!!

Sam Vaknin Absolutely, had to go and look it up, out of curiosity. Nemesis noticed this behavior and attracted Narcissus to a pool, where he saw his own reflection in the water and fell in love with it, not realizing it was merely an image. Unable to leave the beauty of his reflection, Narcissus drowned. Narcissus is the origin of the term narcissism, a fixation with oneself.

I am the daughter of a NPD, ex-wife of a Clinger Psychopath (19 yrs) and Ex-GF of Somatic NPD (3 yrs). What is the demographic of the NPD? Is there a certain culture that is more NPD than others? I am of E. European background (Macedonian/Polish) and notice in my experience certain cultures the unhealthy expression of 'love behavior'. After years of not being able to take the pain any longer, I wondered for some years if I am solidly CoDependent or am I posess NPD within myself. I do not find use in using anyone for success, as Ive always worked hard at my own, however I do believe Ive always wanted 'credit' for my ex's upbringing, if you will. I was addicted to the highs of helping (clinger) and arguing (Somatic NPD)....The dysfunction is all I knew.... what type of therapy is needed to break away from this pathology? I always wanted to play the role of a traditional woman however I also sought men that needed fixing or helping. What is it? NPD? CoD? How is this fixd - CBT? EMD? In the end, the men in my life were sadists, cheaters, conmen, and stalkers. I believe now that I could have been killed many times over. Writing a book seems to be helping me therapeutically, however I still wonder how this ends in order to start over. I do wonder about my traits, and how they comingle with the callousness I was drawn to throught my life, starting with the Father. Thank you for educating me...

I am not engaging in it "now". I coined the phrase "narcissistic abuse" and started the entire online (anti-)narcissism movement in 1995! I do it for money and fame (narcissistic supply). I met my ex and it was love/lust at first sight. My close friend introduced us. Supposedly he was single and had been divorced for 4 years. Week two of our relationship my intuition told me he was married. My close friends tried to convince me to let that thought go. The friend that introduced us somehow got him to admit he was still married but had not lived at home for 4 years. Needless to say I was not happy, but somehow my ex convinced me he was "available" and he was going to get a divorce, he just didn't have a reason to divorce before he met me...(I fell for it). Then almost two years into the relationship my son got in some trouble and i needed to help him. My ex told me to let my 18 year old son help himself and the day my son went to court my ex (at the time my boyfriend) called me to tell me he was going to F%&$ someone, or everyone if I did not come to see him NOW. This was the first time I knew he had some kind of disorder I just did not know what it was? I took a flight to see him within 3 weeks of this crazy call. I knew something was up. I checked his phone and found out he was seeing someone else. He finally admitted it and then turned cold as ice. He wouldn't even look at me. He was mad because I looked in his phone. Infuriated he was caught. He told me he didn't tell me to save my feelings. I said, how could you have me come here and act like you missed me, loved me....? He had no answer. It has been almost 3 yrs since I left him standing in the middle of his living room, no eye contact, complete disconnect...and have not seen him since. We talked on the phone but I cannot forgive him, nor can I talk to him about anything without yelling at him then months go by and I send him nasty text. Is he a narcissist? Am I? How do move on?

@Samvaknin if I demonstrate narcissistic traits would it be better for me to refrain from social interactions i.e. abstain from going to clubs etc.... is there a way to treat this or is the condition a life sentence? perhaps it is better to avoid human interaction if these traits cause hardship to others? I appreciate your insight and cannot begin to show my appreciation for your work, thank you.

what is the term when Somatic and Cerebral narcissism are combined in the personality?
@samvaknin
@samvaknin 9 жыл бұрын
All narcissists are BOTh somatic and cerebral, but one aspect is dominant and the other recessive and emerges (is expressed) only during life crises: www.narcissistic-abuse.com/faq29.html and www.narcissistic-abuse.com/journal21.html

A person who is a psychopath is normally a narcissistic person, but that's a side-effect. That's all it is. When you don't feel certain things you get cocky. For instance, I walk into a super market and calmly walk out with two carts full of groceries without blinking an eye. I load them up into the car, wave to whoever is collecting carts, and go home. I have the money to have bought them, but I want that slight thrill of getting away with it. Would I kill someone? No. But I have had the thoughts. I would never do it, but I had a decent set of circumstances growing up,,, eh, for the most part I guess. At home, anyway. Edit: actually, I guess I'd shoot a guy if he was messing with any of my family. Not willy-nilly though.

Unfortunately describes my significant other to the T !! He also shows his vulnerable childlike side too me also ! He is very possessive over me , insecure, love bombing , emotionally sensitive, grandiose personality, given to out burst once of anger when under extreme stress ! Of which I told him never again , and hasn't ! Jealousy and controlling individual ! He denies of course, but admits his jealously because of his ethnic background, Hispanic decent ! He regards himself as highly intelligent , handsome , grandiose. Im guilty of teasing him with silly pet names , at that time , early on I had no idea of his mental state ! And he has taken it to the higher level now , that I have to lasso him in off the edge of his joking now , crazy behavior that he loves to do ! But I love him, regardless ! Its hard not to when he loves me so much , he tells me everyday ! Iam have several health problems and told him so , by our second date , but never made a difference to him except he thought it depression , and constantly makes sure that I eat everyday ! Or he gets upset ! Angry he says ! He has broken English and kind of cute! Make no mistake we have argued and I have broken with him at leat 4 times in 3 and half years, but he always comes back , in a day or two. He never wants to leave for good ! I guess Im stuck with him !

+Beatrix at The Cchw Club Very True. It is better (healthier) to recognize & AVOID those kind of manipulative, cruel, hateful & hurtful people. Regardless of how much love/patience/understanding/forgiveness they receive they do not change their evil ways. It is abuse. One CANNOT change abuse - one can only TAKE it or LEAVE it. NO CONTACT is the best solution. Amen.

Could you please do a "companion video" to this subject with regard to The Game & this so-called pickup artist movement? (specifically in terms of online dating & social media cyberpaths) You mention the bond between an NDP person & those women who have similar psychological disorders. Please elaborate upon the bond between women with BPD & men who are somatic NPD. If I can untangle that NPD/BPD ball of string I maybe able to have a healthy psycho-free future. Thanks!
