This happened to me when I was 17. I was asked on date. He told me to wear something nice. He ends up taking me to a whole ass pyramid scheme conference where they asked us (“guests”) all to stand in front of the crowd and commit on the spot. Yep. I was involved with one for a few years and my "mentor" was like you need to hide people on you social media feed that are already a part of it or buy products. Then you need to "friend" the friends of people you are friends with so that you can then try to recruit/sell to them. It was exhausting. Eventually she told me I have a problem connecting with people since I wasn't able to sell/recruit. I'm thinking "I can connect with people fine I just can't push products on people". Especially really stinking expensive products.

OMG, once I went to lunch with another girl who worked in the same industry as me so we could network. These people are awful! My most recent encounter with a melaleuca person was the worst one yet. I work with individuals with special needs, so whenever I see a parent with children that have special needs, I am always inclined to say hello. I said hello to this mother and we had, what I thought, was a lovely chat. We connected on social media and, within 30 minutes of having said “bye,” she is sending me all sorts of information and facts about melaleuca and telling me it will “change my life.” I barely knew this woman! She also professed it was life changing for her kiddo with special needs and all of the products were key to his good health. I’m sorry, but using your sweet child to sell or recruit is appalling.

I live in Grand Rapids, MI which is where the Amway Headquarters is, and you guys would not believe the kind of money that exists there. There’s an entire town (it’s called Ada) of luxury shopping and dining across the street that basically only exists because of the wealth (primarily Amway executives, not “independent business owners”) that exists in the surrounding neighborhoods of Amway HQ. It’s controversial here, because Amway as a company has indirectly benefited the city in so many other industries, a lot of us forget that what they are, first and foremost, is an MLM.

OMG! She's so patient! I'm only partway through this and I'm already ready to just stand up and walk away. Can't help noticing how many many times he says "honestly". People being honest usually don't feel the overwhelming drive to convince you they're honest to the point it becomes a verbal tic. He's not articulate or emotive which is really adding to the whole effect.
