Yep. I was involved with one for a few years and my "mentor" was like you need to hide people on you social media feed that are already a part of it or buy products. Then you need to "friend" the friends of people you are friends with so that you can then try to recruit/sell to them. It was exhausting. Eventually she told me I have a problem connecting with people since I wasn't able to sell/recruit. I'm thinking "I can connect with people fine I just can't push products on people". Especially really stinking expensive products.

OMG, once I went to lunch with another girl who worked in the same industry as me so we could network. At the end of our meal, she said later she had an event she wanted to attend, but seemed nervous to go alone. These people are awful! My most recent encounter with a melaleuca person was the worst one yet. I work with individuals with special needs, so whenever I see a parent with children that have special needs, I am always inclined to say hello. I said hello to this mother and we had, what I thought, was a lovely chat. We connected on social media and, within 30 minutes of having said “bye,” she is sending me all sorts of information and facts about melaleuca and telling me it will “change my life.” I barely knew this woman! She also professed it was life changing for her kiddo with special needs and all of the products were key to his good health. I’m sorry, but using your sweet child to sell or recruit is appalling.

I live in Grand Rapids, MI which is where the Amway Headquarters is, and you guys would not believe the kind of money that exists there. There’s an entire town (it’s called Ada) of luxury shopping and dining across the street that basically only exists because of the wealth (primarily Amway executives, not “independent business owners”) that exists in the surrounding neighborhoods of Amway HQ. It’s controversial here, because Amway as a company has indirectly benefited the city in so many other industries, a lot of us forget that what they are, first and foremost, is an MLM.

In most MLMs 94-99% of people make nothing or lose money. With the Amway example, the “average” is between $0 and the $84,000, so it may show that the “average” income is $200-300/month, but even that’s misleading. But let’s say someone is lucky enough to make $200/month. That profit is eaten up by the $200 of products you’re required to buy each month. These companies make their numbers difficult to investigate but most of them release an income disclosure statement that, once deciphered, shows no one but the top 1% are making any money.

About 15 years ago, my partners cousin invited us to a barbecue at his new place. While it is proper etiquette, for the inviter to pay for the date, I always make certain I have enough to cover my evening, just in case. If I had a "date" like this, and my date gave me a book and assigned me homework to read it before our next "date". I would thank them very nicely, place enough money on the table (or go to hostess) to pay for my share, and set the book on the seat, as I march my happy ass out of there.

I had some friends in 2001-2 when I lived in California. Years later I had moved back to Portland Oregon and they had moved 3 hours away in Washington. They wanted to come see me and I was so excited! They took me to an Amway recruiting event. I was sickened.

I don't know what's worse: Getting sucked into a pyramid scheme or actually loving the products sold in a pyramid scheme. My mom. LOVED those horrible Princess House crystal pieces so I'd have to actually deal with these people in order to get her bday gifts. 😂 I finally introduced her to Waterford and she hasn't looked back.

That's what kind of happened to me. I liked the products so I dealt with the crap for a while to get the discounts. Now I realize their stuff is overpriced for what it is and I can find as good or even better products for cheaper.

When I was in college, I went for boba and on the counter was a jar for a raffle to win a "all inclusive spa day for you and 6 friends". I never win things so I thought, why not, you never know. The next day I get a call saying I won!! Imagine my shock, I finally won something!! So I gathered 6 of my closest gals and gays and we went! My first red flag was that the "spa day" was downstairs at the boba shop. Turned out it was a Mary Kay scheme, where we were just taught how to apply Mary Kay skincare and makeup and were then invited to purchase! Literally nobody bought anything and we left cracking up!! They gave me HELL for falling for something like that, and we still laugh about it.
