Pregnancy comes with a lot of advice concerning everything from how to determine the sex of the baby to how to ease both pregnancy symptoms and the oft-dreaded task of labor and delivery. Most of these stand on little to no evidence, but some are attached to data. In today’s episode, we examine the quality of the data behind two popular pieces of advice about easing labor and delivery outcomes.

Well I HIGHLY recommend the consumption of red raspberry leaf tea during pregnancy in the 3rd trimester! Helped me to go into labor on my own and have 2 vaginal births after cesarean, and looking forward to my third in a few weeks🤗🙏🏿!

AMAZING TESTIMONY, I’ve begun drinking red raspberry tea at 33 weeks. I don’t want to go into labor before 40 weeks but I do want to go into labor on my own vaginal birth after my previous cesarean. So I’m inspired and excited

then you probably already know a scheduled c section the best thing for a baby and the mom mentally and physically the recovery overall a lot faster as well even though the lie tries to say its not because they force the woman to stay 3 days in the hospital instead of kick them out after 1 day and then the complications of a natural birth ends up with the mother dying on the stairwell and those news reports are way to common and brushed under the rug

But the data doesn't say it hurts either. Eeehhh. Say I do both things and it boosts my confidence and gives me a can do mind set. I even if it wasn't those things, it kind of helps. I think I'll try them. Worst thing that could happen is they don't work.

The problem with studies like this is that by the time that they are published and made available to the general public they are dated.

I had a pregnant patient ask me very recently about raspberry leaf tea, so this is really helpful! (her question was mostly in the context of GDM but this is still interesting)

In traditional Chinese medicine they use dates with fresh ginger to help with nausea and vomiting; not for labour problems.

Just a few days shy of 37 weeks here. A few days ago I increased my consumption of raspberry leaf tea and now I've got annoying contractions that kept me up all night last night (about 20 minutes apart and needing to breath through them) and during the day about 10-15 minutes apart. I've stopped drinking the tea now and hoping things will slow down. This is baby #5 for me and my midwife just explained to me that women who have had multiple pregnancies can be more sensitive to it and to not start drinking it until last week of pregnancy.

When I was in my last month of pregnancy, I dug into some of this research and came to similar conclusions. I still ate dates. I was like... I'm not sure there's any evidence that dates are better than any other dried fruit, but it doesn't hurt me or anyone if I eat some dates, plus it's not very expensive. Dates are yummy, and at the very least probably helped keep me regular. I skipped the red raspberry leaf tea because and I didn't want to spend my money on it because it sounded kinda gross.

Raspberry leaf tea is actually delicious, as long as you don't overbrew (then it turns bitter). It has a faint raspberry flavor without the tartness.

Good to hear the opposing side as I hear so much for it. Like drinking 4-6 cups of the tea a day. They say they are a good source of vitamins. But I am wondering if I can find other foods to get those other than drinking my money and taste buds away on tea.

Hi Dr. Carroll! Hopefully video ideas are welcome in the comments - would it be possible for you to go over the safety of Essential Oils? I'm definitely not falling for their claims of how they'll improve my life as a person, I'm just considering getting them so they smell nice. But I'm concerned about whether it's safe to fill my house with tiny particles of evaporated oil. Should I expect that to be harmful to my lungs, or is it realistically fine and I should go ahead and enjoy having everything smell like lavender/eucalyptus/spearmint/whatever? Thanks for constantly cranking out such useful videos!

Who cares if dates do or don't shorten the second stage of labor. That's the single part of childbirth you already have control over to begin with.
