My grandma has said a 510 was her favorite car she ever had, and she used to get a new BMW every year back when our family owned a dealership in the 70's-80's so I think that's saying a lot for the little Datsun. Always thought they looked like a lot of fun.

I owned a 78 datsun 510 2 door back in 1986, bought for $100.00 4spd. I slid on some ice one winter, and spun around sliding going backwards about 40-50 miles per hour, and hit a telephone pole on the driver's side so hard, it pushed the whole trunk over to the passenger side!! I had my kid brother run across the back yard full speed hitting the pass side with whole body blocks, until he straightened the trunk back out, then I put in taillights from a dodge mirada I believe it was called, and it was good to go back on the road!!! Loved that car!! Thanks for sharing!!!

in Australia we refer to them as Datsun 1600 and they are mostly 4 doors .. have owned 5 of them over the years and absolutely love them. L16, 2x L18, L20 and a CA18DET. wish Id kept the granny spec datto with L20 with twin webers. importing a 2 door is a long held dream of mine. cracking video Tom 🙌

I used to bomb around Portland Oregon in the late 80's and early 90's in a bunch of 510's. Fun cars. I finally gave in and sold them all and bought a 92 hardbody. But my faded red 68 4 door was an absolute blast to to drive. 2 liter, dual webers, hot cam, Z buckets, short shaft 5 speed with an odd shift pattern, a z rear end, gold Enkei's and Nitto 205/60/HR13. Looked like a pile with nice wheels.....it sort of was. It was an import with fender mounted mirrors. I flogged that car daily.

To say those early Datsuns were prone to rust was an understatement. When I first got my licence in 1972 and living in the midwest where they used copious amounts of salt on the roads I remember seeing a B210 rusting thru after just one year and many were in the scrapyard after just 5 years because they were unsafe to drive from all the rust.
@grantrussell82883 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately this was a problem for lots of Japanese-made cars in those days. The reason is because in Japan they used very poor quality steel. Much of their steel is recycled, and in the past they didn't process it very effectively, so there was already lots of rust in the metal to begin with. They didn't really need high quality steel for their own domestic market, because they don't have nearly as harsh of weather, cars don't get driven nearly as much, and people don't own cars in Japan for very long due to strict inspections that take unsafe cars off the road. Eventually by the mid-80s, Japanese car manufacturers finally started building their car bodies and frames with better quality steel.

Back in the day I had a B210 that I purchased for $40. I drove it for about a year and the engine threw a rod but because there were so many of them in wrecking yards back then finding a good used engine was cheap and they were easy to remove and install. I put in at least 5 wrecking yard engines before that poor car rusted away but I had a lot of fun with it and have always wanted to find another one that is in good condition.

Not a dying breed. More young people, myself included, are discovering what awesome and easy to work on cars that Datsuns are. I've been driving/ restoring my 240z for 10 years and every time I get behind the wheel brings a mass of smiles every time. I got the bug bad. It's just a shame rust scares alot of diyers away from picking one up

Wow, haven't seen that many 510s in ages. There were millions of them and they have almost completely disappeared. I had an orange 73' 2 door with Shelby Cal 500 mags(wanted A R Libre mags...), fibreglass fenders, a Formula France steering wheel, and the obligatory rusty trunk floor, in about 1978. Great car, like a poor man's 2002, but I liked the look of the Datsun better. Thanks for stirring the memories Tom!

Paint scheme was generic Nissan. The number of shorty Z cars is unusual. Here in Oz we got 240s, all manual and short, 260s both long and occasionally short and then 280s, all long and fat. The shortys are the ones everyone wants. I have had half a dozen 260 long w/b cars. Even when under 10 years old they were rusty and doors splitting apart . By the late 90s they were all stuffed. And worth $300 as a trade. Sold some to the wreckers and others to 'enthusiasts' We never got 1600s in 2 door. most of them were rallied and beat to hell and ofcourse rusted as well. A friend had one and the amount of rippled panels was about par for the course as they were so thin

Yeah, they squirrelled away all these cheap things so we couldn’t have them. All the cars are unobtainium too. There’s nothing to see on the road, nothing to buy. They KILLED culture. It’s called city culture mining ⛏. They have these bizarre concepts of having a car when it’s not actually useable. They stopped being cars decades ago. These are buckets of rust, not cars. My dad came rolling up in a brand new 1972 Datsun Z, and my face lit up. I was 12, and that was the coolest car I had ever seen, and especially cool being picked up from school, and driven at 100mph home. That was a pretty good speed in 1972! Later, when I was 15 1/2, I received my aunts Datsun 1200, and proceeded to switch it over from auto to stick, and replace the motor with a built engine that had a side mount Weber. The owner of the engine also had a 510 motor for $400 more, but he wouldn't sell it to me as it had 2 side mount Mikuni's (I think, might have been SU's) that he said, required a lot of tinkering with as they would fall out of adjustment. Just as well, I'd probably have killed myself with the extra 40hp.😁😎👍✌
