I'm glad someone covered this song and finally woke some people to the amazing talent of Peter Blegvad. I like his music and his drawings immensely. Amazingly talented man.

Hard to think Loudon Wainwright didn't write this. He's made it his own and it so encapsulates the family dynamics he's spent 40 plus years singing about.

Wish there was more Blegvad stuff online; come to think of it I wish he was still releasing such cracking songs as this. The man's another vastly under-rated songwriter like Robyn Hitchcock and Lloyd Cole.

Absolutely Beautiful song, the lyrics are brilliant, for me it expresses how a parent feels about their child and the unconditional bond between them, this song is very special to me and my dad, so thank you for a truly amazing song xx

Beautiful song. I had no idea this wasn't Mr. Wainwright III's original song . . . I love this version. The finger-style guitar really suits the whole feel of it. Hah, this song makes me, an immature 20-something with a minimum wage job and no home, want to be a father.

You posted this comment 12 years ago, so I hope you achieved your wish to be a father. I, too, was an immature 20 year old more than 40 years ago, but was fortunate to meet my wife, get my act together, and experience the joy of the birth of my daughter when I was 27 years old. She's 34 now but will always be my baby. This song brings back my fondest memories of seeing my baby flourish and become a woman. She's a licensed attorney now and is getting married in a few months. I hope she gets to experience the same joy.

Fantastic. Glad I found this since if you listen to his kids, Loudon doesn't really live up to the lyrics.

It's very difficult to decide whether this one is better than this version. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g36VgJmBq72XqKM Hint: Both are correct answers.
