You are correct, sir. This will be epic! I'm hooked and I'm in! I'll be following along. I'm takin notes too. That way when I finally find my own, I will borrow some of your mechanical knowledge to have an awesome example of what a Willys can be. Thanks ahead of time. Be safe brother. Til the next one...

Rock Auto has a clutch kit for the 69 commando. There are probably a lot of vehicles that use the same clutch pack/transmission you can cross reference. I'd say get a rear main seal while you're at it. You KNOW how bad that job is when it's in the truck! I'm looking forward to seeing this!
@redclaytraveler1949

I really should change the rear main but I’m trying to get it rolling lol I can change it in the truck if I have to. I’m sure I’ll regret it lol I just want to get started while I’m in town.

External oil pump? Can boost pressure with a stronger spring.
@redclaytraveler1949
@redclaytraveler1949 Ай бұрын
What do you mean external oil pump? I replaced the oil pump with a new one and talk about it in a later video. I was at a time thinking I might have to have a remote oil filter but I think I will be fine now.

Decent power! That's more than late AMC 304's. Be nice if you could find an overdrive unit to get them rpms down a tad at speed

I unfortunately can’t use a overdrive on this Dana 20. It’s not like a Dana 18 that’s easy to put a overdrive on. I’m hoping it all works out lol

@@crs2275 Thats true. I'm hoping that with the higher rpm range of the dauntless I will be able to cruise at about 55 or so. The L hand is screaming at 3500 rpm and that is about 35 mph. The dauntless can handle higher rpms and isn't in the red until around 4300 rpm from what I have read. Either way I should have plenty of power and torque to get it moving and keep it moving. I have my eye on a couple other transmission options if I don't like this one. This trans is basically a t90 and I have read a lot about T90s hooked to 350s and having 5:38 geared axles being able to get well over 60mph. I'm hoping my truck can cruise at 55 or 60 and still have a little extra for passing folks. lol

I had my dauntless completely rebuilt and totally restored my 69 cj5… after engine break in it sounds like a diesel with a rocker knock… I’m devastated… don’t know what is causing the tap…😢
@redclaytraveler1949
@redclaytraveler1949 10 ай бұрын
I’m sorry to hear that! I have heard that sometimes that during reassembly oil ports aren’t lined up properly and that will cause poor oil circulation and knocking. I don’t know the details but maybe something similar happened with your engine. Does it have a warranty on the rebuild?
@noneckjoe948
@noneckjoe948 10 ай бұрын
@@redclaytraveler1949 not really sure about a warranty… the shop rebuilt it like 3 years ago and I just ran it a couple months ago… I called him to see if he would listen to it and he didn’t act too interested in helping me out…. I’ll push harder once I’m not as demoralized…

I hear you buddy. I would definitely make sure everything is getting oil before running it. It might be something simple or it could be worse if ran much. I’m sorry buddy, I know how you feel and just let it rest and come back at it with a clear mind.

I know your in a hurry but I don't think you are hearing me. I don't know the mileage of the v6 but that's not all that matters. The longevity and reliability can be greatly increased with a few steps. I can give you my phone number to prevent typing it all out or I can type if necessary. You have a rare motor and I don't want it blown. I don't like unnecessary mods or work but I feel I'm yelling train and no one hears me. I want your engine to live long and do well

I agree on principle. I had full intention of doing the oil pump work. The oil pressure it’s showing is perfectly in spec and I can monitor it as it’s in the truck. My work schedule is wild and if I go to deep this will turn into a year process lol feel free to email at redclaytraveler@yahoo.com and we can exchange numbers and talk if you have the time. This engine reportedly had around 60,000 miles.

@@redclaytraveler1949 what I recommend doesn't take long. The misplace is so the gears don't dig in to the aluminum cover plate. By the time oil pressure goes down the damage has already happened. I say pull and clean oil pan. Gently remove front cover. Replace timing chain with cloyes true double roller. The factory and all metal replacements are only good for 60 to 70 thousand. At that point the chain starts to dig into the top gear sending flat flakes of steel thru the motor. That cost me about 2300 on a 232 not long ago. Friend warned me of this but I didn't get it. I thought all metal I'm good but I was wrong. With double roller on v6 you remove and delete chain tensioners mounted on block. They don't get used with double roller. When front cover is removed you can check dust gear and fuel pump eccentric as they are removable from the cam. Distributor gear not dust gear. My phone typed wrong. The mid plate and timing chain should help the motor live long. Also check the long oil pump shaft to have no play in the front cover as in side wobble. Checking oil pressure relief valve. Be carefull with gasket on hex plug you may need to use it over. Make sure plunger moves freely in bore. Prime oil pump by packing with pure petroleum jelly aka Vaseline as per factory manual. My number is 913 709 9673 if you have questions

@@redclaytraveler1949 also to pull front cover remove fuel pump distributor and harmonic balancer. Kind of obvious but making sure.

Do you suggest going to the metal gears for the timing chain over the fiber ones?
@redclaytraveler1949

So I pulled the fuel pump and looked at the timing chain and it’s bad. So I’m definitely going to pull it apart and replace it and check on the oil pump and replace it as needed
