This week I came across Larisa Shepitko's name for the first time when I discovered that the String Quartet No. 2 (1980) by the Soviet composer Alfred Schnittke is dedicated to her memory. The music of the quartet suggests an intense reaction to her death, so I wanted to know more about her. Your video was a very useful introduction, thank you for producing it.

Thank you, Raymond! That means the world. Directors and artists like Shepitko deserve to be remembered, to have their stories told, and to be succeeded by their creations. Glad you enjoyed this video and hope you find more of her work!

I wrote a paper on The Ascent for a film class a couple years ago. My professor humbly admitted he had never heard of Shepiko, but had since added her to the Russian filmmakers curriculum.

Thanks for bringing her name to audience. I'm Russian, 41, and only now I watched "The Ascent" - and this is really one of the most powerful movies about war and about human will and choice. I really like that you tell her story with historical context, and treat her as a part of that generation of soviet film-makers. The censorship was still strong - and some of those films reached the broad audience decades later. Larisa Shepitko definitely deserves her place in world cinematography. P.S. And please, don't mind you'd been sweating ))

What an amazing honoring of cinema greatness! I first saw "Farewell" at "The Screen" cinema in Santa Fe many years ago during a Klimov retrospective of newly restored 35mm prints. This important director Larisa Shepitko was given an in depth historical context as part of that retrospective. This was years before the Criterion release in DVD's. "The Ascent" is perhaps the greatest film in cinema history. Shepitko crawled in the snow with the hand held camera following the intensity of actions with vested involvement that goes beyond "emotional". The intensity of her soul shines in this great cinema art.

Thank you! You are really, as the other comment put it, doing god's work. Shepitko story should be told. And I'm so glad that there are people out there who are passionate about her, her works, her ethics and her legacy.

Actually as a Russian I must add one thing: consensus among local art cinema historians is that Shepitko was much stronger director than her husband and her legacy is considered to be more prominent than his. At least that's what I heard said by a couple of VGIK professors. That's why it's somewhat of a mystery for me why Klimov is so big in the West, while Shepitko is clearly not.

Thank you for the kind words. That’s interesting, especially to hear a Russian’s perspective. Shepitko was a once-in-a-generation filmmaker, and her legacy should be better known!

I just watched Ascent on youtube. I was struck by the harsh conditions on locations, but the acting was excellent. I've noticed that Russian artists put their heart and soul into their work, whatever it may be. It's captivating and profound. Thank you

An amazing director. ‘The Ascent’ is a masterpiece she married Klimov the director of ‘Come and See’. Quite a couple. ‘Wings’ another of her films, is also well worth checking out. Taken from this world far to young.

I've said it on other KZbin channels, it is such a shame that The Criterion channel isn't available in New Zealand. As someone preparing to do a B.A. in film studies, it's kind of essential. I am new here and I thoroughly enjoyed this. I've just discovered The Ascent, so to hear something of the woman who made it was both interesting and informative. Thank you....if you have Criterion's number, give them a call and ask them to look up New Zealand on the map!
