Need more roads leading to Abreeza and SM Lanang. Need a skyway connecting McArthur Highway to the diversion road. Coastal highway from Toril to Matina/Bolton and maybe up to Lanang would be really good. Direct access towards Calinan from the diversion road would be nice.

I lived in Davao City for about five years from 2009 to 2014. This video makes some very colorful claims that I just didn't see and don't foresee for many years to come. Davao City is or can be a great place to live but there are some things a Westerner would miss from their home country. Starting and ending a business is not as easy as the video suggest. The bureaucracy is quite convoluted. It is clear this is on purpose when you see how the confusion caused by government offices only increases revenue for local government as it takes needed cash out of the entrepreneur's pocket. These difficulties are only magnified if you are not a citizen of the Philippines. Safe and reliable transportation along with safe and reliable roadways are almost nonexistent. A serious lack of parks and open public spaces are also just about nonexistent. The beaches are filthy and difficult to access unless they are privately controlled. Even then, the local rivers dump loads of trash and other pollutants into the local beaches. It is clear to imagine Davao City as this video envisions it could be, but it is just not there yet and I am not sure that particular area will ever get there. Maybe if the new parts of the city is developed further North or South of down town Davao City away from the congestion of the old infrastructure. A bridge between Samal Island and Davao City would be a great improvement along with more and wider freeways and roadways connecting other commercial and residential areas of this very large city by land measures. There is much to love about Davao City. You do get a pretty good sense of peace and safety. The people are quite hospitable. There are plenty of schools, shopping along with accessible health care. There are many beautiful and affordable resorts. And one thing that made it a bit better than Manila and other areas of the Philippines. There is plenty of rain and it cools down at about late afternoon and into the evening. If I were to suggest to anyone here in America to visit the Philippines (and I do quite often) Davao City is one of the first places I tout, especially Eden Nature Resort. What I hated most about Davao City. Very loud!, Karaoke all day and throughout the nights. Burning of everything from plastics, yard waste and household waste everywhere you go. Bad roads and heavy traffic. Government corruption at all levels, although sometimes you can make that corruption work for you (the average residence). Sometimes you can offer up a little "lunch money" as the locals call it. If you are not one of the locals, I highly recommend you don't try that one.....ever!

I agree that Davao City could get there but I am not so sure the current president will get it there. He has served his purpose there in bringing a more law and order (norm) to the area. Now it will take someone that understands the importance of community and commercial development to becoming a world class city. Before I come to my conclusions, I always examine from a distance all aspects. I found that most people I had this discussion with in the Philippines for one reason or another over look the full picture. I do have a more objective perspective than most Filipinos from that area. One of the first things I noticed is the great similarities in our two countries. It is like going back in time, as the Philippines and it's people seem to be about 70 years behind the US in many areas (both socially and from a larger infrastructural aspect. One of the first observations I noticed and spoke about to family members and other Filipinos when I was living there was the importance of dumping the idea of Nationalism. Again, this is something the US was forced to abandon many decades ago. Even today, it keeps trying to rise from a zombie state. A good example of this is the Trump presidency. These people are "nationalist". They believe America is a "white" European country but it isn't. It never was and never will be. It took Federalism to begin to solve many discriminatory problems we continue to be faced with. Even as I insisted to everyone I spoke to in the Philippine that Federalism had to happen before the Philippines would be able to prosper as it should or could, most disagreed. They didn't understand how Nationalism is only a way for the few to prosper over the majority. Prosperity must be shared equally. Look at why Washington DC was created. Federalism allows for the states to have some say where and how the country and government, governs. They have some say where the money and services go. For instance. If you had Federalism lets say after WW2, you would more than likely have an interstate highway system. I drove from Davao City to Manila. It was a wonderful experience but an extremely difficult drive. At one point we had to turn around and drive more than 50 miles the way we came because a road and bridge was washed away by a tropical storm. What an inconvenience for us but just imagine the commercial loss from goods and services that had to do the same. Even if the road had been passable, just think of how little commercial goods travel from one end of the country to the other due to such a poor (to no) existing transportation system. I could go on in detail about so many things that the current president just does not have the time or money to invest in not only Davao City but all of the Philippines. It will not only be interesting what Duterte is able to accomplish but it will also be interesting to see if Filipinos understand how important the next type of leadership they choose after this current administration. The three most frustrating things I was faced with the 6 years I lived in the Philippines was the attitude towards non Filipinos owning certain things like property, guns and boats to name a few. Poor roads and highways and seemingly little understanding of how important tourism means to a countries economy. The beaches come to mind more than anything else. Some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and so little access for the public, not to mention how polluted they are.

Neat Gifts Selling foreigners properties? Before you know it it would be like Melbourne Australia where house prices are jacked up by a lot of Chinese non citizens buying so many here. Even locals are complaining and for a good reason! Even in a more developed country like Malaysia, they don't risk in selling foreigners properties unless they pay over 1 million ringgit. It's to stop the locals from losing out in being afforded land and house. Thais and Malaysians are actually more nationalistic - in practical sense than Filipinos. See how much they venerate their cultural heritage sites in comparison to Filipinos where money is #1 thing that matters over anything hence the rotting Intramuros and those similar of historical value. The "pride" thing is simply veneer to save face and cover up what they're incapable of achieving in reality. Nationalism isn't the problem. It's the freaking culture in general. The worst aspects of the culture. And it starts in these small communities. Lacking discipline and sense of self accountability are things very pervasive among average and are one of the biggest factors of hampering progress. It doesn't help that we have about over 100 million of a population - and most lack in skills to be able to start up production in the economy. Education is also not much of a priority it seems. Having 40-50 students in one classroom is freaking insane. They need to build up on this sector if the people's mindsets have to change for the better for generations to come.

shiori kutsuna Well for one, consider how the heck are you going to be able to move those settlers nearby without destroying their way of life - realistically speaking. Also, environment issues in the long run. Is it sustainable? Do you want it to be another Boracay? Does it also benefit the community or only to those scamming profiteers? This is my issue with prioritizing tourism as an industry over others.

Totally not correct I lived in Davao for a long time in early 80's the place then and now is still run by police and military 100%, the NPA had to run out this city I was in Matti Davao Del Sur where daily dead service and PI military men where bought to hospital from fighting with local NPA in the mountains by helicopter every evening , no ones those this , I lived next to the NPA in Davao but just how it is , Marcos died and all Davao cried we just wanted all food prices to remain the same and just waiting to bring back the old times, this City is not clean just waiting for the right moment again , Davao is divided between military and police they are the mafia that control and divided the prostitution, drugs and any un lawfull activities in this city, I can go to any Philippine government agency and buy what I want. Development and the future of Philippines is still so far away form normal operations to world standards and will not occur for the next 50 years or so by my reason at least. But I love the BBQ chicken and Tuna heads in Davao the best and only there, kenny low and raw fish, yes I will be back, Peter
