What is so great about Dave is this... His performance of all Ten songs is absolutely phenomenal. He didn't take anything away from these songs, if anything he added to making the songs better. In most cases, when a new drummer or guitarist comes along, when they perform previous material, it makes you long for the original performer. Not so in this case. His work on Vs and Vitalogy was so legendary! i started playing drums in high school, around the early 90's, and listening to this guys drumming inspired me so much!! His crispness, his busyness on the cymbals and high hat, always had me floored. I don't want to get into the politics of why he was fired, everyone has their own viewpoint and i support all those involved, but no way should this man not been elected into the Hall of Fame. When Pearl Jam was on top and in the world's eye, this was drummer that was there and represented. You can say what you want about him not fitting in, but this man's work should always be remembered and celebrated. Hopefully the Hall will see what they done and give this man the respect he deserves.

I didn’t pay much attention to Pearl Jam until I saw them one night on SNL and thought “ I don’t remember their drummer playing this good!” Then I found out his name was Dave Abbruzzese and I became a fan of his that night. He took the band to a whole different level, and he didn’t “overplay” as some band members would claim, he simply locked into a groove and played it better than most drummers of that era. His use of cymbals from splashes to crashes along with his kick and snare technique was phenomenal! Unfortunately band egos, jealousy and cliques get in the way of sound judgment which wasn’t heeded when they let Dave go.

Dave being forced out of the band happened at about the same time Eddie was asserting his influence over the songwriting processes in Pearl Jam. From what I've read, it didn't sit well with Jeff or Stone. I think the idea of having to put up with Eddie's shit was slightly less-offensive than the notion of Pearl Jam continuing on without them. That pretty much would have been the equivalent of calling them "Pearl Jam, featuring Eddie Vedder and the Guitar Center All-Stars."

I think I dig Chamberlin a little bit more. I think a lot of the sound of Smashing Pumpkins is cause they can ride that line of hard rock to heavier stuff real well. Chamberlin could do both, with his background in jazz. He could do soft, groove, and whail. 90s had a ton of great drummers. Much more than in the 00s imo. At least as far as mainstream rock goes. Modest Mouse had a great kid on the drums for their first couple albums. Same with Afghan Whigs with Steve Earle who they "found at a bar". These guys were just coming out of the woodwork lol!
