Like guys who actually came from metal bands or even just felt like they fit in with Metallica's vibe at all. Except for Pepper Keenan I guess. There didn't seem to be much real competition for Robert. It surprises me cuz I would think a million badass metal bassists would be all over that opportunity. Ya know?

Playing bass in a band like Metallica is very, very physical. Rob seems to manhandle his bass and make it look easy in the process

Also Rob played with his fingers, was able to keep up since Metallica always plays faster live, and a lot of times the bass just goes with the guitars (so he has to keep up with James and Kirk's speed).

Probably because James is just as bad as Lars, and those two think alike. Lars is also that guy to James in such a way, that any negative opinion that could make the band look bad. Lars says it all, and takes the heat. Keeping James looking like the good guy. The hate on Napster, both of them. Wanting the bass turned down on AJFA? Both. But yet, Lars is the asshole, especially in any interview. That's only what I heard anyways. Also, I can't see how a person can be around somebody like Lars and not be a dick to some degree.

***** I see what you're saying. But my point is that they (or at least whoever edited this) crafted this thing deliberately to show that they made the best choice possible. They have an interest in doing that. Not that they didn't choose the best guy, but the other guys are pros too, as you know, and I'd bet they had their moments.. Smear might be too strong a word, unless "they're just not as good" (it's 10% over their ability) is a smear to another pro musician.

+Paulo Mondaca Well, it is fretted bass so there is not much of reason to be really out of tune. Unless their octaves are not set right or if they bend too much, which none of them did. They are proffesional bassists, they know how to tune their instrument. Also that riff is in chromatic scale, so it might feel a bit sharp in some way and of course, tempered tune feels a bit diffirent on every bass. That's what I think.

+Cyramor11 A change in personality and style that happened because Cliff was no longer there. Unlike Jason, Cliff was a big factor in Metallica's creative direction. From Cliff's death to this audition Metallica had become what Lars, James, Kirk, to a degree Bob Rock, and mostly Lars had made it. With some old reports surfacing, it seems that if Cliff lived one of two things would have happened: Cliff would have left or Lars would have been booted. If the former happened and Metallica made similar if not the same decisions with the band direction, this video would not exist. Because Cliff would be hired back with the Metallica collective begging, "Help Us! We screwed up and we don't know how to fix it. Help US!"

Because they are not the same persons they were when they started. They grew up and changed their style, as well as their motive. The reason Lars said that was because they are different then they were 30 years ago, and when they got Cliff, their goal was to rule the world and get drunk/fucked up. Now, when 22 years later, they hold a new audition, and their motives and personality changed. Thats why :) And I am sure they all played more songs than For Whom..

Rob actually had a "callback" audition with the band where they pretty much knew they wanted to hire him but needed to hang out/jam with him some more... I'm guessing it's the second time he jammed with them he didn't have a bass, as he was staying at Lars's house and also borrowing a t-shirt of Lars (who took him out and got him shitfaced the night before, he's hungover as fuck in a few of these scenes) He told the story on Marc Maron's WTF podcast recently. There's also cut scenes from between his two auditions showing that the band's management suggested they use Trujillo for the Raiders parking lot gig, but they object that he "isn't even in the band yet" and used Bob Rock instead.

Hard to believe some of these clowns were even auditioned, respect where it's due Twiggy Ramirez (3:37) - Completely the wrong key. Scott Reeder (3:45) - Not sure what happened there? That geezer playing with a pick who looked totally out of sync with the rest of the band. The guy from the Cult wasn't bad, no wonder Trujillo got the job, the others were fucking awful.

Scott Reeder would have brought Metallica in an entirely new direction. He's a way better bassist than any of the rest in the video but he just doesn't belong in Metallica. You really should look up Welcome to Sky Valley before judging him.

its not that they are awful its that bassists need to feel the type of vibe that the Metallica has like Rob does plus he used to be in Suicidal tendencies and that band kicks ass, the others are good but not in Metallica's groove.

0:53 Robert picked up that bass and without thinking I said out loud “god I love Robert💛” Love everything since DM in 2008 and the direction he brought them, he was the perfect fit. Personally i never understood people bashing bands playing into old age like the stones. Bands like Metallica, Melvin’s, AC/DC, Faith No More, McCarthy, are just such an entity and play and sound AMAZING in 2024

Gregory Geloewski James did clarify that it was an ''advance on a percentage'' so I took that to mean that he was getting his first however long's percentage cut up front as opposed to how you put it i.e. a million and ALSO a percentage to follow. That's just how I took it though.
