I snuck watched them in Louisville Kentucky because the local CBS affiliate would show it at 11:30. I was 13. I know it was in color, but I watched almost all of that in the black and white set that my grandfather had given me. That TV was important to me. It was a shitty old mass produced 1979 Admiral black and white set. It had been my grandfather and grandmother's first "second" TV. It was in their kitchen down in Murray Kentucky, and had stopped working. They still had their nice color TV, though! So they weren't worrying about replacing it. First I saw of the Admiral TV set was on the visit to the country. Grandfather and dad had arranged this ahead of time. They had been giving me working vacuum tube radios to play with before, but this was a TV. It was in granddaddy's shop, the backshell had been removed and the capacitors in the power supply powering the picture tube carefully discharged using sandbox resistors, so that they wouldn't hurt a little boy (me). I was 9. Granddaddy soldered the first replacement power lead on it, and then handed the soldering iron to me. My little hand soldered the second lead of the power cable to the back of the little TV. Granddad and dad put the cover back on, let me drive the screws, and that was my first TV. I happened to have watched all Dave Allen on that TV. Benny Hill was there, on an adjacent channel, but Dave Allen was more my speed. Storytelling, resorting to (expensive to film, by the BBC, doubtless) filmed sketches only when Allen's joke could be best told visually. Watching Dave Allen at Large prepped me for my introduction to the BBC Radio Series "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", which I, a Kentuckian, was able to tape off the FM radio something like just a year or two after Dave Allen was syndicated here, around 1981 when National Public Radio in the United States received permission from the BBC to broadcast them. But Dave Allen was first. His was my very first intro to British (Isles) television comedy. Dave, I'm in Kentucky, and a shot of bourbon in your memory, even though I know you never drank.

Brilliant!!!! I wisched we had such imaginative Clowns in germany today. But sadly i have to say, that our "greatest Comedians" still this day steal by comedies from England/Brittain... The most famous sketch-shows, that i had sawn in the the 80´th are practibly whole stolen from brittish comedy-shows, 20 years before... Nobody knows Dave Allen in germany, what is a shame... but he was against "The Church" and that´s the reason no televison-station would bring him to the Televison in Germany this time. The bad Thing is, that our most famous Comedians had stolen his sketches... and till now they take his material to make themself good Clowns... cause they know... Nobody knows Dave Allen in germany... I... who is verry interrested by humor... and thought knowing the english humor, have to realised, that there was a more bigger Clown in Britain ... bigger than Monthy Python and Benny Hill together...and nowone in germany even didn´t know his name, or his work, where meanwhile a group of "comedians" had stolen his sketches and made their own comedyshows from it... till today!!! ...I´m ashamed!!!

Have found easier way by going backwards from my dad, his dad and so on. Many came here during the potato famine in the 1840s and docked at Liverpool before dispersing all around the country, some went further afield like USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia where food was easier to obtain for their families, found that many died of starvation, such a shame how they were treated by the English, no wonder they don't like us.
