Soak that last sentence in as a boxer. Best advice you'll ever hear. It may be the best fun out of it all, but sparring hard too often will take who you are as a person away from you. Doesn't take long in some cases either. What's he saying here? 20-24? Totally doable to be altered forever in that time if you just spar, spar, spar. Maybe - maybe not. But, you can't un-take the punches. Do lots of rounds slowed down, work technique, work the body, work circumstances, take the power out, work defence - you'll get better a thousand times faster than sparring hard every round. Don't spar 'up' too much either. As in, don't be the punchbag for the better boxer all the time just because you're tough - 'future you' won't thank you for it. Spar 'down' as well - let them work the basics while you work a specific and don't take the piss. Tonnes more value in sparring like that anyway. You need to be able to think and drill muscle memory to improve - you can't think when you're only worried about getting your chin took clean off or your brain bruised. Just my two penneth and if it helps one lad/lass take one less concussion, the point has been achieved.
@ruijackson76974 жыл бұрын
I agree with a lot of that. Too many idiots talking about sparring stories and knocking eachother out in sparring. Which is not what sparring is about. Its about practicing technique and how to react to punches coming at you. Ofc there is need for a small amount of hard sparring to simulate the feel of a fight but this should only be done a very small minority of the time
@Snabonen4 жыл бұрын
Hats of to you sir... agreed
@aguy4634 жыл бұрын
I think his main point was the last one you made, somehow I don't feel like aj was ever really made to spar "up", I don't really think any of the top guys did whilst on their way up. Its the team behind you, and what you want as well, you really need to get a guy to be a heavy bag for you that you are better than, you practice beating him up and get better, get a better guy in who you are still above and keep working. It's a ruthless sport where either you're the guy winning or you're the guy getting beat up, you need a good team who want to look out for you and I used to think that sparring more technical with higher guys or guys same as you was good, but it doesn't work, you can practice offense and defence better on a guy you're better than, it also builds your confidence which is a huge plus.

He's right, he lost something along the way, I can tell, I'm in the same boat when it comes to taking damage, it takes something from you, either from your body, your heart or your mind. Each beating you take can build character but also chip away at your foundations. I've only been knocked out 6 times (including street fights), but at the age of 44 I know I'm not the only one that noticed changes in my speech, mood, memory etc. Just in case you didn't know, fighting is dangerous even if you win. I'm just glad he came out of it healthy enough to enjoy the rest of his life.

Great interview of Dave regarding the life of a sparing partner & also highlighted what an great fighter & human being Usyk is as he knew himself that he'd proper rocked Dave & even though he said himself that it was pride that made him press forward to continue God bless Usyk for seeing this & calling time where as I'm sure other fighters may have followed up because of ego & put some real hurt on him. Yes of course i'm very well aware that at the end of the day it is a very tough sport but all the fighters have family & no one wishes to see anymore tragic events like Micheal Watson or Gerald McClellan to name but a few.
