My friend Marc Smolders drowned in 1965. We sang together 'En aai laaik ill' because we couldn't speak any English. But every time I hear this, I think of him...

I'm 44 now but growing up my dad used to love this song. Me and my dad had a very broken relationship with him being mentally abusive, sometimes physically (though it would be more threats than actual violence). I didn't see him for most of my life after my teen years, but then he became terminally ill and wanted to see his children. We spoke but he wouldn't admit to his wrongdoings and I ended up being more hurt than I already was. Then he died and we never got to finding closure. Over the past few years since his death I've been able to let go of a lot of my anger and pain, and it's opened me up to look deeper into who he was, realizing that not one person on earth is onedimensional, and he once was a young person with hopes and dreams of raising a family. This song reminds me of that. It's from 1965 and my dad would have been 18 years old. A young teen possibly drinking his first beer, and falling in love for the first time, hanging out with friends, posters on the wall and possibly driving his first moped or motorcycle. This was the soundtrack to that. Today I mourn the child that was inside. The one full of dreams and aspirations, before everything turned sour and his mental health started taking a turn. What he did to me was wrong, and he was responsible for it. It has left its marks on me far into adulthood. But at the same time he may not have known better. He may not have wanted it this way. That's what I choose to think. Rest in peace father. If there is a heaven I hope you're riding that new motorcycle for the first time, every single day.

Wow. I'm awed by your ability to open up and rationalise something so raw and painful to you. Bless you and I hope you find some solace and love in this beautful Ray Davies song, performed so well by Dave Berry. Good luck and best wishes @TMCremixes
