From a 60-year old Scottish white guy living in Paris: Dave, your song Black doesn't just speak to me it opens my eyes and my soul. You, your generation, all that burning talent, brothers and sisters, let your strength and positivity wake up poor old suffering Britain from its post-Brexit bewilderment. Johnny Rotten said it first: "There is no future, in England's dreaming!" Now you and your fellow artists take up the struggle, and it will be glorious. The future is yours. Yeah just not a true lyric is it. A black man stabbed a white man to death on his birthday in front of his son at xmas for no reason other than he had mental health problems... @A A mitigation isn't a defence. Although I do understand what your saying. Mitigation is a set of circumstance to be considered in determining the extent of a persons guilt and the necessary action to be taken. Which is a valid thing to do if it is necessary. And accountability is just as important. That being said mitigation isn't as easily considered or applied to the black community due to reinforced schemas and notion burrowed deep in people's minds (all races including black people) that they belive to be inherently true - but aren't. So where a murderer - (a wife abused for years by her husband) can have her sentence quashed due to failed consideration of mental health issues after hammering the man 20 times in the head with a hammer, I'm very doubtful (I could be wrong) that the same application of mitigation would be as easily afforded to a black woman in the same circumstance. Particularly though there is a fear of the back male in society which is a historical trope. And unfortunately after 4 centuries of mental and physical abuse and taught self undervalue it's plane to see the effects of what is expected has taken hold of some black men living in poverty. The self hatred is evident. The real problem is that people think of black people synonymous with poverty - as though the two are interchangeable. Without considering why and completely ignoring factual reasons i.e historical racialised systems created to encourage social disparity of people based on race. This can be applied to class as well, but if black that disparity is compounded more so. Accountability is very important and always required - my only qualification to that is that if mitigation is necessary everyone should be afforded it fairly and in the same way. There are many studies show that there is a disproportionate treatment against black people comparatively to white people in the same or similar circumstances - probably due to the things I've mentioned above. If people do not accept this as a truth because they feel like the blame is being placed on them some how - then there will never be change . Accountability needs to happen as a collective.

@@coachTaps wrong. This is America is also rich in substance and despite it being a fairly simple song it's more the semantics between the lyrics that speak fathoms about the current plight of black people in America. Dave's song might be more universally clear as to its message but it's silly to call it "better" or "deeper" when they're two very different songs with very different meanings.
