It's too bad that a LOT of music listeners don't care for jazz. I live in North-Central Wisconsin where jazz is only played (occasionally) on a PBS station. These "obtuse" listeners don't know what they are missing.

I saw Jimi Hendrix and Chicago Transit Authority in Charleston, WV, in June 1970. It's a shame that I didn't know about Dave's quartet playing there during the same time period. I was already transitioning to jazz at the time. As a drummer, I've always place Joe Morello at the top of my list. How could anyone not love Joe?

Dave's older brother Howard Brubeck was the 1960's-70's music director & administrator board member at Palomar College, San Marcos, CA during my term there. Dave Brubeck died of heart failure on December 5, 2012, in Norwalk, Connecticut, one day before his 92nd birthday. He was on his way to a cardiology appointment, accompanied by his son Darius. Dave Brubeck married jazz lyricist Iola Whitlock in September 1942; the couple were married for 70 years, until his death in 2012. Iola died at age 90 on March 12, 2014, from cancer in Wilton, Connecticut. Brubeck had six children with Iola. Four of his children have been professional musicians. Darius, named after Brubeck's mentor Darius Milhaud and the eldest, is a pianist, producer, educator and performer. Dan is a percussionist, Chris is a multi-instrumentalist and composer, and Matthew, the youngest, is a cellist with an extensive list of composing and performance credits. Another son, Michael, died in 2009. Although Dave had spiritual interests before that time, he said, "I didn't convert to Catholicism, because I wasn't anything to convert from. He declared himself a Catholic in 1980 after a performance at Notre Dame University. Dave also made his mark at University of the Pacific where I had visited their music Dept. but as fate would have it I recieved a scholarship at Stanford & missed out on enrolling at UOP. Lastly a woman neighbor named Alisa conducted a serries of Rudolph Steiner studies at her home where she announced that she was one of Dave Brubeck's girlfriends before he got married.
