The joke at 2:15 with Ed Asner being the mayor of Fish Town is probably a reference to the show Fish Police, an animated series that bombed in which Asner voiced the chief of police. It was cancelled a few months before this remote, but was still the butt of a lot of jokes.

Dave's contempt for the NBC management on the phone is why he's the GOAT. All the current late night hosts are network bootlickers. The company tells them what to do and what to say and what opinion to have, and they snap to. David Letterman didn't give a f*ck what some pinhead in a suit thought he should do on his show

Why do you think that would have been unusual?

@@dongiller Remotes are easily the most time consuming and exhausting way for a host to fill minutes of talk show airtime. By this point Dave is a humongous star; has outgrown the time period; middle aged; in a completely non-competitive situation; doing a bit that will air after 1 a.m.; in the summer which was very much a down season for TV back then. Maybe he's gunning it because he knows there's some blood in the water at 11:30.

All I can tell you is that Dave did his remotes nearly weekly until 1997, when they began tapering off in favor of other staffers (Biff, Bob Borden).
