I first heard this in Vietnam over the AFVN radio network in the late fall / early winter of 1967-68 while serving in the war. The fidelity wasn't good on the AFVN, so I never really knew exactly what they were saying. Never heard it again until I found it on here by shear accident. It still doesn't make a lot of sense, but the nostalgia is priceless!

@gymnastix I'm sure younger persons born in the '80s, '90s and the last decade will have their good memories of youth too. But if I had the chance, as in the movie "Groundhog Day," to live one part of my life over and over again, I would choose from 1958 through 1970. Just to have my mom & dad back, and be living in my first home, would be great in itself!

Indeed ,the violins interlude is pure magic. Although I recognised it at the time as well produced pop, it's not till the 80's that I could bring myself to buy their greatest hits compilations. For a Stones an Pretty Things fanatic that's a huge step to take.Good music is just good music, that's all there's to it.

First time I heard this song I was on my way from Los Angeles to San Diego... circa February, 1968. I was in the US Navy and my Great Aunt was dying of breast cancer.... I was riding a Greyhound Bus and this song started to play.... it's been one of my favorite songs most of my life. Sadly, my Great Aunt passed away shortly after my arrival in San Diego.....four months later, I received my orders for Swift Boats in Vietnam.... I remember thinking... if the breast cancer didn't kill my Aunt, these orders would have. Mark Bell

Another factor is the kids were probably told (by the director of this television program) to behave in a more restrained manner, or were just naturally restrained, knowing their parents and family would see them on television. But at a nightclub or real concert, where anonymity is more greatly assured, inhibitions are more likely to go out the window!
