Dave Edmunds released this song in November 1970. It reached number 4 in the US in 1971.

Nice! "I Hear You Knocking" was a top ten hit for Dave Edmunds back in 1970. He drops the names of his heroes in that middle passage -- "Fats Domino, Smiley Lewis, Chuck Berry, Huey Smith, Bob Dylan!" The roots of the song date back to the 1920's with dozens of variations released in the decades after, notably "Keep Knocking (But You Can't Come In)" by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys in 1938, "Keep A Knockin' (But You Can't Come In)" by Louis Jordan in 1939, "Keep A-Knockin'" by Little Richard in 1957, and "I Hear You Knocking" by Smiley Lewis with Huey Smith on piano in 1952, and "I Hear You Knockin" by Fats Dominio in 1958. Also last, "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" by The Rolling Stones in 1971. There are lots of doors being knocked at in the history of blues and Rnroll. And it's usually the woman that wants to come back but there are many wonderful songs by female artists about men wanting to come back also. It's quite a common theme. Many times "trouble is knocking" in different ways. An old favorite of mine is Howlin Wolf and "Tell me". Dave Edmunds was a splendid artist. He really knew how to pick the old songs and made some wonderful covers, like "Singing the blues" and so on.
