Dave Grohl’s words about depression are SPOT ON. Most others cannot see this unseen disease. It hides, it dwells in the shadows and depths of despair. People tell you to “snap out of it” as if it were that simple a solution. “Get over it” is another go to people say. Do they not realize that if was that simple, we’d all not be depressed? Do they not see the depths of our despair? The stigma that goes along with depression? If only I could let a person in when I am spiraling out of control... When I’m overwhelmed by negativity and despair. Sometimes there is no trigger. Sometimes there is. But I’m judged by society either way with little compassion or comfort. You do not know the throes of depression until you’re consumed. But, by the grace of God, I have a network who supports me when I’m in its grasp. Quit judging. Just because Chris, Chester, and Kurt had fame and fortune, does NOT mean these men had peace.

@kristinemcgill60792 жыл бұрын
Well Kristina you're right about most of your points - please don't take this wrong. As a severely depressed person myself - I have learned - no one is JUDGING, because no one is really noticing the other person - they only care about themselves. So take that off the list of reasons for depression. I know the throes of depression; I know that if I don't care for myself, no one will, and if I don't do something for others (usually animals) I am done. By extending the caring you seek to another, an animal or person, you will get the caring you seek. But you have to force yourself out of yourself...and the stupid drugs aren't the solution.

As someone dealing with a long time depression, I have to admit that in retrospect I can see some painfully relatable ominous signs and cues in Taylor in this interview. There's a bunch of coping mechanisms for battling depression, and one that is very common - in my experience - is hiding your pain, and it's incredibly straining and draining. Also avoiding discussing topics related to depression is common, it triggers a defence mechanism and it is about detaching oneself just to keep it together. If you really break down this interview, you can tell that Dave has a very open and I would say healthy response to these questions. There's no signs of avoiding and/or suppressing emotions, and he seems to speak kind of "freely" as in saying what he is feeling and thinking. Taylor seems to be avoiding the topic of depression and death, and this is what I call a coping mechanism to detach oneself from the inner turmoil in self-protect. Also he's being very casual, yet I can tell that he is putting a lot of effort and energy in just keeping himself in "safe territory" and he tries to steer the conversation towards music itself. Before anyone gets angry or offended, I'm saying what I'm saying only in the sake of depression awareness. As I mentioned, I myself am someone who is trying to cope with long time depression, and these are just observations how I feel and how I relate to seeing Taylor in this interview. This has absolutely nothing to do with mocking, blaming, criticizing or judging Taylor. It's the very opposite, I'm trying to spread awareness about how individuals might deal with depression. It is super important to educate ourselves about depression, the stigma around mental health issues needs to be eradicated. I don't see how we could ever do that without speaking frankly, and it's especially important if it feels awkward, or when one concider it as something of a taboo. DISCLAIMER: I do not know if Taylor ever was clinically depressed or if he had any other mental health issues. Also I do not know about the cause of his death, and I'm not implying anything at all in that matter.
@willm30272 жыл бұрын
I’m totally the opposite and like many maybe? I feel happy and positive all the time. Sadness is really rare for me to feel and I have experienced people being sad but because I’m so caught up on being happy or whatever that mood is, I cannot see it or understand it. Not saying it’s bad but I understand at this point that it’s real. I personally cannot see how they hide this pain but anyone feeling that, please reach out because sometimes your loved one can’t see it coming. Maybe you are able to see the signs if you’re in the similar situation.. but what about the ones who really want to help but can’t see it? I see Dave and I see that no matter the tragedies, it’s not one of his options. Like I’m able to see my own kind just like you can see Taylor’s side.. I’m also not mocking or making fun of this issue just my two cents.

This is so very relevant at anytime. As someone myself who has suffered with depression since my later teens. It becomes very easy to wear a mask and give the impression that everything is ok but your feel completely empty, lost, soulless. On hearing about Taylor’s passing, the first thing I thought to myself was that the band must be feeling destroyed. Then of course his own wife and children. I think as fans of any band you may feel inclined to think about the band mates first and foremost before family. But I think that’s only because you automatically relate the group as that’s your first focal point. But that in no way is intended as a disrespect to the immediate family. I personally just thought of the band, then of course Dave. Losing yet another close friend. Whatever the outcome of any autopsy into Taylor’s death. I hope that all concerned can find some sort of peace and comfort. Rest in peace Mr. Hawkins.

It's this simple. People who feel soooo low just want it to STOP. it gets ALL consuming like chaos. And nothing else matters for that ONE moment. So at that millisecond you make a choice
@derekalen67035 жыл бұрын
Some things will never be understood unless those things have become reality. Don't just before learning the truth. I remember at a young age judging just the same for some that chose suicide,because i was hurt by the losses of the people that had made that choice.and the pain turned into anger because i didn't yet understand.those who choose scuicide "ARE NOT COWARDS,OR SELFISH!". they are simply lost and imprisoned in the worst and most tragic emotion that exists for so many. Later on in my life i had sadly realized this fact as i had suddenly understood by having to live with the same tragedy that is depression. I have a beautiful innocent loving daughter and other loving people that care for me in my life . unfortunately the pain, sorrow, sadness,sickness ect. are so severe that i couldnt see past it. Or even think of how it would effect and devastate my innocent daughter and many others in my life. The fact is that it hurt so tremendously that all i could do was immediately stop and end the nightmarish pain and sadness i was suddenly experiencing. If you were suddenly engulfed in flames, would you instantly do anything to stop the pain and put the flames out? Well thats how severe depression can be. and just as sudden as shockingly being set in flames u have no time to think u panic and what happens at that moment happens. That's the sad honest truth of how depression can be and is for so many. In the moment of the times i took my life i couldnt think of my daughter or any other.all i could do was instantly stop the pain, like putting a painful flame out from ones skin. Thankfully there were special people that had brought me back to life. I now constantly remember those dark times and think of my daughter and the effects that my death would inflict on her and others that care for me. I use those painful memories to care and think of those that i would have hurt and left behind by taking my life to prevent that tragic reality. Depression cant just be turned off and there is not always a magic pill to solve it. I hope this message reaches even 1 person that judged like i once did not understanding the truth behind the topic, and allow them to be part of a solution to help the suffering. instead of causing victims further insecurities, self esteem issues,and stigmas regarding depression..... Thank you to those who took the time to read this and i hope it helps to give anyone a bit more of an understanding or outlook to this issue. Too many suffer and feel the effects of tragic endings from depression. Every life matters. You are cared about even by strangers you haven't had the chance to meet. God bless everyone! 🕊💜✝

You don't wanna die. You want the pain to stop. You want the loop to stop. The rat in your brain. Turning your wheel. You want it to stop. And it won't. Unless u stop it. Don't know what it's like if you don't have it especially if you have clinical depression, it's a hard to do anything, even though you have everything, sometimes you get so tired from the battle that suicide is the only way to stop the pain

If you had to sit there and be asked these highly personal questions by a couple of morning zoo characters who clearly don’t give two shits about you or your response (see my other comment), you’d probably be sitting there biting your lip or trying to transport to another time/place too. Really do not think it’s appropriate to try to judge someone’s mental state based on a 3 minute internet clip. Especially considering what and who they are attempting to endure in said clip (while probably on tour, jet lagged, halfway across the world from home).

The older guy coming in at the end = literally the worst timing and sense of decorum ever. zero self awareness. Big goofy smile on his face as these two are pouring their hearts out while reminiscing about an inspiration who is now dead. Don’t ask the question if you don’t have the time to hear the response or you don’t actually care what they have to say. “Good luck with the rock 1000 - cuz you guys are killing it!” Derpity doop deep derp. Their faces in response to his utter lack of sincerity were priceless though. It must be so painful to have to hit these morning shows while touring.

My heart is breaking. It still hasn’t sunk in yet….I’m just honored I got to see the band live in 2011. Taylor IS the only drummer who’s so damn good that he could support Dave as a frontman. I can’t imagine how extraordinarily agonizing this is for his wife, kids, band mates, friends, etc. I know as of now (3/26 at 5:30pm NYC time, I nor anyone else, knows the cause of death, but people and me too are assuming a relapse OD or he took his own life- both equally horrible. I hate speculation and do not like to fuel it as it’s disrespectful- if Taylor took his own life would mean Pat lost his first vocalist Darby to, then Kurt (so they say), and if that’s what happened, now Taylor. Regardless of the cause, the world lost an incredible musician and human. (Sorry my drunken, ADHD-raddled brain made this so long-winded) Rest easy, Taylor🙌🏼🕊👼🏻🥁🖤

Taylor did not take his own life. He had an enlarged heart (which he knew about) and didn't stop drinking & using drugs, which can have fatal consequences. He didn't commit suicide. He had a heart attack.

It was in Bogota, right? And they said something like traces of 10 or 20 substances found in his urine. I'm sorry but I have no right to know the results, but I would believe Taylor's family would have US authorities complete more extensive tests. Some of the "substances" reported can be prescription meds. So a contraindication could have happened. Too many unknowns here. Let the family have peace and if they want answers, let them have them in private.

Being a public figure and/or a role model, is a 24+ hour full time job. Its really stressful. And Stress is dangerous, I know. I am in no way comparing my own life to theirs. But for my own personal experience, working 11 - 16 hours every day... It give you stress, and it does lead to some bad mental and physical stuff, including stuff like social anxiety, depression, broken sleep patterns, and isolation...

Fantastic points sir. This is an important comment because the more people understand what they are going through isn’t unique to just them, that they are not just batshit crazy, other people also feel super low at times or out of touch (or you name it) - it’s very helpful to know that you’re not alone. It can be extremely tough to see in the moments when you’re at your lowest - you feel like no one could possibly understand. Also, I think it’s actually probably very accurate to say you’ve probably felt extremely similar feelings. This isn’t a popular opinion, people think it’s assumptive or egotistical or in poor taste to say that you could possibly know what someone else is going through (especially a big name rock star!). Our society would have us all believe that we are all these complete unique individual snowflakes (it’s much more conducive to division that way). Truth is that we are more like the snowstorm. Our experiences aren’t indentical but the human experience is more similar than most people will ever even begin to contemplate. If we could all realize this, it’s my belief that the wield would be a much better place.

Rest in peace Beautiful Taylor 💔 The thread that runs through alot of these famous people's addiction/ depression/suicides, I believe stem from their early traumatic childhood experiences. As Taylor said : "It doesn't matter what's in your bank account..." The level of expectation to "stay on top", "show up" and deliver good music under the scrutinising magnifying glass of the public eye and be the "performer" whilst under the surface carrying a lifetime of emotional pain and have to appear sane in the public eye, I imagine would be extremely terrifying and lonely and at the same time trying to balance and maintain a personal life, relationships etc. RIP Kurt, Chris Cornell, Chester, Mark Lanegan and many more great artists gone too soon 💔🙏🕊

Two of the greatest paying absolute homage to Chris. He was in a category all his own amongst bands like Pearl Jam, Alice, Foo, etc all great great bands but Chris with Soundgarden as well as Temple of the Dog, Say Hello to Heaven today is still untouchable, it's one of the most beautiful tribute songs to Andy about addiction n depression. To sum it up Dave Grohl and Taylor just almost are unbelievably speechless over losing Chris because of how talented he was. I don't want to leave Chester out he was a great talent as well I just wasn't a big fan of Linkin Park but respected them. Dug some songs but anyway. Just wanted to comment RIP
