In the book she talks about how hard it was, as a teacher, to sign the papers for him to quit school. However, she also knew that music was in his soul and she wondered what kind of mother she would be if she tried to take that away from him for a piece of paper. Most of the moms in the book speak to the heartache of watching their child give a part of themselves to music and the fans. It's a good book, I highly recommend it. If you do the audiobook you can hear her read it and a couple of interviews between her and Dave.

Dave is one of the most authentic, REAL people in the world. I just watched a Jim Carrey documentary, and Jim said something very profound. He said that all people are “actors”, and they put on an act every time they leave home because they want to be perceived by people in a certain way. So they “act” in a way which they believe will cause others to accept and subsequently “like” them. Dave does not act. Dave is always Dave, and we still accept and love him. My favorite fart fact is that Cervantes and Shakespeare both included fart jokes in their work so they shared time periods and a sense of humor as well as artistic immortality. Don Quixote included maybe the oldest version of the “blame someone else for your fart” trope in a novel and Hamlet laid a silent but deadly double entendre when he bragged about letting his assassin get “hoisted with his own petard”.... So many famous historical figures were crude, rude, and my kind of dudes....
