Paul Shaffer's comment at the :26 mark is just priceless. "That's funny, because I used to be a swimsuit model." So totally indicative of the brotherly chemistry Dave and Paul had and why us old school Letterman heads just love the guy. Perfect foil for Dave and he got the up and coming bands on the show back in the day BEFORE they broke it big. REM's first performance was just wonderful.

My dad had to get up really early for work, so we never stayed up late enough to watch Carson and Letterman. But we watched Live at Five, and when Dave would do this, my parents were always like "Who the hell is this guy?" 😂

Elevator races witj Bob Costas, Chris Elliot sketches, dropping watermelons from the roof, etc. Those were the genius of Letterman in the 80s. Can remember watching him as a teenager, no one like then and since.

Yeah, he was still funny when I was in diapers, but it wasn't until I got into the double-digits in years that I started to watch late-night TV and by then Dave's show was kinda... meh. I mean it happens with age, you can't go around harassing everyone for fun forever, you don't have the energy for that as you get older, but it's a shame because I never got to see him in his prime until KZbin. I gotta say, though, I finally get it.

And that was Katie Kelley who was a regular on Live at 5 who finally let Dave him. I hope somebody made amends or at least apologized to BenBen who was just following orders. Control Rooms and Producers famously HATE when this happens, devoted they are to rundown sheets and stop watches which is perfectly understandable. But they lose how spontaneity breaks the predictable format which can be numbing to the audience. I've seen it myself when I worked in television. It's how the star deals with the "out-of-the-blue" that the audience loves, like when things would go wrong Regis & Kathie Lee and decades earlier on Ernie Kovacs. Notice how Al Roker, a true broadcaster, gets it and welcomes him. Roker didn't become a household name for 40 years by not understanding television. When Carson was in New York in the 60's, he used to do the same thing to Roker's predecessor, Dr. Frank Fields, whom Johnny would have fun with him in his monologue referring to him as "Crack Meteorologist Dr. Frank Fields." Fields was totally local and few knew him outside of New York. Early Carson would occasionally barge in on Dr Fields during his weathercast - or trying to - on WNBC. But as far as I remember, it was totally just for us watching at the time; not for a bit on "Tonight." On one intrusion, I recall, Johnny stood behind Dr. Fields and goosed him repeatedly with his wooden pointer.
