He's not the best singer but it adds to the performance somehow! He really nails the bitterness and the emotional repression finally coming to the surface that is so important to Pierre's character

people sometimes forget that over-saturated, sometimes autotuned (but of course can still be beautiful live) vocals that have become a staple in modern musical theatre, are not the pinnacle of what's considered "good."

Also to be fair Dave didn’t plan on stepping back into the show when it was on broadway. He had to do it because of the stupid controversy surrounding the show. I have nothing but respect for him and this show truly deserved better.

Dave Malloy really nails down the depressed and drunken state Pierre is in. No I am not insulting him by any means. I mean that as in, I see him as Pierre and his voice captures that emotion despite not being "Broadway professional" quality.
@emalaw1329 Жыл бұрын
Of his plays I've only experienced Great Comet and Ghost Quartet, so I can't say if it's a constant in his work, but it appears that he likes to place himself in the role of the "sad old man", and he plays it remarkably well. I really hope he's in a good place today, bc his acting feels somewhat informed by real life.

i think he portrays pierre's character better than josh, but josh has a better voice technically. if you could combine dave's acting and josh's voice you'd have the perfect pierre edit: nevertheless, he did a great job with this song. his voice may not be the paradigm for Broadway, but this performance moved me emotionally. stan dave malloy
@personne9803 жыл бұрын
See I disagree with that. I find this rough, gravelly voice to be perfect for sad, depressed Pierre. Josh Groban’s got the voice of an angel which doesn’t really fit imo.
@musicaltrash20244 жыл бұрын
my favorite pierre by far. he was amazing live, he really embodied pierre emotionally and while his voice may not be as "classically pretty" as josh's, i feel like his rougher tone suits pierre better.
@kueller9173 жыл бұрын
He was the original Pierre so not surprising he can still pull it off. But it's still clear he wrote this song for Groban (or someone similar) since those big moments don't hit as hard. Imperfections are more than welcome for Pierre and Groban was far from soulless with his own emotion and growl, I just also like the power of some of the other performers. Still credits for Malloy for filling in the role I wish the show could have gone on longer.

His voice may be imperfect but it adds so much fragility to Pierre, it fits the first part of the song so well. At the end you can tell it was written for a voice as big as Josh Groban's and that's why it's his version that brings me to tears. But much love to both performances still, and huge props to Dave Malloy for writing one of my favorite moments in musicals

There is a difference from being a bad singer and not being the most phenomenal singer. I would by no means consider him bad the same way I wouldn’t consider Lin Manuel Miranda a bad singer. Also broadway performers typically get months of vocal preparation and training leading up to a performance. Dave didn’t get that, he never planned on stepping into the show on broadway. He was forced to because of the controversy surrounding the show.
