In the film 'Walk the Line' Johny Cash is advised to only record a song as if it were his last testimony. This is what I feel when I listen ti Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings; that they are always singing their hearts out, as if for the last time. ` I love their work.

So cool when artists are mutual fans of each other, I initially got exposed to Welch and Rawlings through a vid of Conor Oberst (of Bright Eyes) singing Welch's "Everything is Free Now." Now, here I am watching Welch and Rawlings cover Bright Eyes' "Method Acting." Such an absolute treat, starting to really love this duo. So thanks Conor and thanks Welch and Rawlings, much love.

It was seeing Gillian Welch singing backup vocals on Conan O’Brien’s show that led me to a deep love for the Decemberists and Colin Meloy. Gillian Welch is the best gateway to other stellar musicians out there.

He's good. No doubt. Are you familiar with another great american music tradition called jazz? David Rawlings does face some serious contenders for the title in names such as Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, John Coltrane, Chet Baker, Brad Mehldau, Sonny Rollins, Bill Frisell, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Herbie Hancock, Ella Fitzgerald and many more. The Beatles did play pretty good as well.

@richardprice80818 жыл бұрын
+JivinJane bright Eyes are Conor Oborst's indie / folk band before he went under his own name. Method Acting is the second track on 2002's "Lifted or The Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground" . A brilliant song in itself but Dave takes it from a desperate place to one of gentle beauty.

From the UK can i say - THIS IS BEAUTIFUL music from 2 excellent musicians.
From Wikipedia: David Rawlings achieves his signature guitar sound flatpicking a small archtop guitar. The 1935 Epiphone Olympic that has been his primary instrument was a mid-priced guitar for its time, with a carved arched solid sprucewood top, carved arched solid mahogany back and mahogany sides. So basically something off the shelf in 1935, wow.
@colourlessbluethings8 жыл бұрын
I think it's just him that makes it sound it so good. It just suits his style perfectly. Gillian's guitar really is beautiful. It's so deep and full, it sounds almost like a piano.
@jonplauche50208 жыл бұрын
his style is very similar to the lead guitarist of Milk Carton Kids.
@ronwood14118 жыл бұрын
David told me the Epi is quirky and has damn little bass so Gillian'd Gibson has to do the depth. He did find a 1936 mad by the same guy.. so.. has a backup. He'd found another '35 Epiphone but it was not the same maker. NOT a match. I tol him he wrestled the Epi to make it sat things guitars try to keep secret. He liked that idea... its what he does.'

Method Acting: There's no beginning to the story A bookshelf sinks into the sand A language learned and forgot in turn Is studied once again It's a shocking bit of footage Viewed on a shitty TV screen You can squint at it through snowy static To make out what it means And keep stretching that antenna Hoping that it will come clear I need some reception, a higher message Please tell me what to feel 'Cause I don't know what tomorrow brings It's alive with such possibility But I know that I feel better when I sing Burdens are lifted from me That's my voice rising So T-Bone, please keep the tape rolling Gil, keep strumming that guitar We need a record of our failures We must document our loves I sat too long in my silence Grown too old in my pain To shed this skin, be born again It starts with an ending And I don't know what tomorrow brings It's full of such possibility But I know that I feel better when I sing Burdens are lifted from me That's my voice rising It's not a movie, no private screening This method acting, I call it living It's like a fountain, the door is open We have a problem with no solution But to love and to be loved So thank you, friends, for the time we've shared Your love stays with me like sunlight and air And though I truly wish I could keep hanging around here My joy is covering me, soon I will disappear *** Cortez The Killer: He came dancing across the water with his galleons and guns Looking for the new world in the palace in the sun On the shore lay Montezuma with his coca leaves and pearls In his halls, he often wondered the secrets of the world His subjects gathered round him like the leaves around a tree In their clothes of many colors for the angry gods to see And the women all looked beautiful and the men stood straight and strong They offered life in sacrifice so that others could go on Hate was just a legend, war was never known People worked together and they lifted many stones Then they carried them to the flatlands, but they died along the way And they built up with their bare hands what we still can't do today And I know she's living there and she loves me to this day I just can't remember when or how I lost my way
