I play guitar. At least I thought I did, until I saw and heard this man play. He aint frum earth, the man understands the instrument on a cosmic level. Christ, I wish I was born with that feel and touch. I am an old man, and knowing that I will never achieve what this guy does is kinda gallin...but, what the hell. At least I can listen to the man who owns the guitar!

the most impressive part of this phenomenal performance is Dave's originality on each solo between verses and how he builds them dynamically. Each one is unique, clever, and spectacularly expressive. So very, very hard to pull off. True mastery of the instrument.

Of all the artists I've listened to over the past forty years, these two have turned out some of the most spellbinding tunes. And they've done it more than a few times. Possibly their best KZbin performance - the venue and the closeness and attentiveness of the audience seems to have had a remarkable impact on the intensity of this amazing song's performance. Dave's solo is a mind blower and Gillian's singing and zen-like rhythm playing is absolutely breathtaking.
@kerthgersen31636 жыл бұрын
"Zen-like". Nice. It shows that perfection is better attained by simplicity than complexity, not to mention the 'beefy' Gibson sound completing the sonic spectrum with David's Epiphone.
@brucekreitzberg7876 Жыл бұрын
I agree. I have seen these guys live 4-5 times and watched dozens of their videos on KZbin and I think this BBC 4 production is them at their best as a duo. They seem to have taken it seriously, the lighting is great and of course - it's BBC - the recording and the sound are perfect. Rawlings is a master at using dissonance. Studying at the Berklee School of Music is a good reason for his brilliance. Listen to his guitar lines. Nobody plays like he. Positively original style. Hard to be original. But the dissonance is incredible.
@koho5 жыл бұрын
His dissonance gets a lot of comments, but more amazing to me is the consistently inventive melodic lines. I think his is even better displayed on, say, Scarlet Town and Tennessee.

So hauntingly beautiful, it’s like thousands of years of human collective consciousness went into this song because the perfect dissonances create such an emotional reaction that the words are superfluous, ultimately. One hears the chords and immediately understands that the song is about suffering and not wanting to anymore, ever again.
@brucekreitzberg7876 Жыл бұрын
That was nicely written. Lyrically, I think some of the words harken to both great moments and some of their worst, like being called a fake or an imitator just because she chose to play music she was not raised around. I suspect that was painful for her for a while, but she has continued doing what she loves and cares for and millions have enjoyed it. I think she's the bee's knees and David Rawlings is too.

I discovered them many years ago- I listened to them as I was running the road for my family and always loved the unique style that they were giving to us that we had never quite heard before- love Gillian and David - hope they continue to rock on for a long time - Ran many miles listening to “ I Dream A Highway Back to You “ Superb Song ‼️

Yeah, but he's no Kenneth Pattengale. Actually, that's exactly who he is - sound of the guitar, melodies, dissonance, body movement, everything. I'm not saying who is better or was first - I just absolutely love both their music.

No doubt! Raw and unpretentious, like true punk. Real and vulnerable!
