*The lyric is: "Stripped down to the bone." lol* *"Depeche Mode" = "Fast Fashion" in French.* *One of my closest friends is a Who FANATIC!* *Dave mentions Thomas Dolby: I like 'im, too!* *And I L-O-V-E The Smiths!!* *Additionally, I've burned many a metric fucktonne of bud to DM!!* *Helps me think better.* 🙂 *OK, now what do I like about this ....* *Great question!* *I'll try to answer it from a non-musician's POV:* *DM started in 1981.* *Really, the only other "synth only" band around was Kraftwerk.* *But DM uses synths in a "hauntingly melodic" way,* *as opposed to the "kling klangy"-ness of KW.* *Their "musical phrasing for synths", if you will, was unheard of.* *Again, I'm saying all of this from a 1000% non-musician's perspective. lol* *So DM's music was using a completely new approach.* *They are very influential,* *so maybe in 2024 in a context of 40+ years of people copying* *their unique style of synth music, it might sound "too 80s".* *And that, I hope, explains what I like about the "Stripped".* *Dave's a drummer, like my Dad, and Shelly's mentioned on LMWTP* *that she used to frequent that place in Brookaleen "L'Amours".* *So I can see how DM's not you guys' cup o' oolong, I get that!* *But thank you both so very much for doing this one!!* *P.S.: Stuttering John is a drunken buffoon ....* *On LMWTP, you mention you worked with Who-Who.* *Didja ever have any run-ins with Drunkie ...??* 🖖🏻❤️

90s Depeche was edgier and had some guitars in lots of songs. "I Feel You" stands out.

just check out I Feel You (1993), Never Let Me Down Again (1987), World In My Eyes (1990), Strangelove (1987) or Black Celebration (1986) ... and you will know why some people like it.

Give them a chance .2 or 3 more songs and you will get to appreciate it. BLASPHEMOUS RUMOURS is a very very deep song.

Stripped was the 1st song I heard that got me into Depeche Mode. Their live version on the 101 concert album is amazing. I'm usually into guitar based rock n roll but Depeche Mode are a fine example of electronic music done right with good song writing. Their Violator album is still one of my favourite albums of all time.

I would recommend the live concert Album Depeche Mode did in the late '80s...called 101......never ever did "Stripped" sound as good!!!

The name of the band is the title of a French fashion magazine that was published from 1976 to 2001. "Dépêche" (first "e" with an acute accent on the "e" and there's a circumflex accent over the second "e") is a journalistic term translated into "cable" ((in the past) a message sent by electric signal) or "telegram"; it's basically the latest news or hot news sent to every newspaper by a press agency or a reporter and "Mode" (in French) means "fashion". I've heard that Lead singer Dave Gahan was having a look at the French magazine at a time when the band members were searching for a name for the band and he suggested the title of the magazine as a name for the band. Whoever the female voice-over is: "You pronounced the band's name correctly!" You were wondering why so many people like or love Depeche Mode: Well, it's British New Wave, Synth Pop; catchy tunes, Dave Gahan's baritone voice which matches both the music and the lyrics perfectly, deep dark lyrics (Blasphemous Rumours), societal issues (People are People), a criticism of the Yuppies in the 80s (Everything counts), BDSM topic (Master and Servant, Behind the Wheel, Strange Love, a Question of Lust, Stripped (Maybe? Not sure... But a reference to "1984" by George Orwell, that's for sure!)), relationship issues (It's called a heart, Shake the Disease, a Question of Lust) and so forth To me, every kind of music reflects a certain mood; sometimes I feel like listening to the Who or Jimi Hendrix or any other rock band and in other circumstances I am likely to listen to Depeche Mode, the Cure or another New Wave band or something totally different such as Funk music...

Hands down one of the best songs of the 80‘s. Total classic. Great statement to open yourself completely in a relationship. The whole album „Black Celebration“ was a milestone for the band. The „synthiness“ was exactly the thing: getting away from tried and tested roads and doing something fresh. Depeche Mode mixed great songwriting and deep lyrics with highly innovative production. „Stripped“ for example contains samples of fireworks and a sampled Porsche engine which were used as rhythms, effects and sounds. The way the band explored new territory made them forerunners of electronic and alternative pop music abd was super-exciting at the time. By the way: Depeche Mode were pretty much into Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix, too. They are just as legendary as those today. Highly influential for electronic music as well as for alternative rock. If you like rock, check out „I feel you“ from 1993 or „Barrel of a gun“ from 1997 for Instance.

I liked Depeche Mode a bit in the eighties. That tune Enjoy The Silence (Dave prob heard that one) was the main song I knew and I did a cover on KZbin of that one. Here's one for Dave to check from the Michael Schenker Group which features Slash and vocals from Erik Gronwall from Skid Row. I’m with Dave here. They were a band I was aware of, but never paid much attention to them. Not really my thing, but I appreciate the musicianship. Shecky, not sure if you saw that Johnny Cash’s son came across some of Johnny’s unreleased material and decided to release it. Country was never my thing, but Johnny always was. Amazing song. Not that fond of it live as I think the sophisticated sounds and samples in it sound a little muffled, but oh boy, it’s a powerful masterpiece of a song on record.

@@thadonis. Lol we're doing a test live stream in a few minutes in preparation for it. I will put a poll asking for best times and days. Dave is in a band that plays a lot during the summer so we need to come to some sort of a compromise if we all can. Look for that poll in the next day or so!

"New Life" was pretty good (back when I was 12!). I kind of lost interest in them after that. Good synth sounds and "moods", but there's just not enough to the Depeche in the end. They're semi-interesting pop at best, and always have been. Bet you've never heard of the group "Japan" (or David Sylvian). Now they were interesting! But just when I was old enough to start being interested in them, they broke up, the swine! Try their 1979 album "Quiet Life" just to ease yourself into them. But then go backwards. I think their first album, "Adolescent Sex" (1978), is fantastic.
