Dave Scott has forgotten more about Ironman training than most of us have remembered. The dude was killing it back in the day because he was doing the stuff others weren’t....like REAL strength training. Training to failure....most of us don’t do it because IT’S INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT! Keep up the great content.

Look at Martin Sundby strength training he was one of the best nordic skiers, he looks strong. Some of the French nordic skiers in 2024 look great.

Thank you for mentioning "training to failure". I always try to explain this to my dad, who is going to the gym and is doing his 3 - 4 times 10 -15 easy reps of whatever exercise, so that he can say to himself "I do my strength trainning". I think that people who have no strength training background are sometimes afraid of muscular failure (for whatever reasons). But there are reasons for quotes like "go hard or go home" or "the last three to four reps is what makes the muscles grow (Schwarzenegger)".

Great point. Not something I'm an expert in and I'll now keep this in mind.

However in Nordic skiing a strong upper body gets you up the hill.

Not sure if the answer was on the mark...He asked about the old Triathletes being well built compared to new ones look like skeletons...I remember starting training in the 90s because i wanted to look like a triathlete...Now wearing full lycra in the run (Gay factor Major) to save 2 seconds and body type I'm not sure i would start..

check out on KZbin what European cross country skiers do. heavy squats, dead lifts, chins dips, BW cleans, 1 leg body weight squats, 1 arm chins, 1 arm pushups, lots of core, Olympic Nordic skiing is very scientific also look at the Norwegian runners these days. Don't get tunnel vision the US does not know it all. Mind you Nordic skiing requires more upper body strength then swimming. But have a open mind to knowledge across the pond.

Good point. I think most of us are quite aware of what the Norwegians are doing in this space, especially triathlon.
