i googled it just now and its only a hip hop studies minor. it's taught under the africana studies--so someone could major in engineering with a minor in hip-hop studies if they wanted to. from my understanding minors are pretty irrelevant, it's usually the major itself that gets you in the door--not the minor. plus, africana studies and hip-hop studies aren't too far off from each other; one could become an ethnic studies or africana studies professor and teach a course of the history and culture of hip hop.

Just putting this out there.. I make 55k a year working in manufacturing plant. On top of that we get anywhere from %10-%20 bonus depending on output for the year. Also, the benefits are top notch and the 401k match is great too. Just wanna say it’s okay to get degrees but it’s also okay to work manufacturing,construction or warehouse jobs. I struggled because I thought I needed a degree when I was younger until I found this job and I love it.

Worked, received several scholarships, lived in cheapest dorm, then moved 20min away to a duplex with rent at $215/month, went to cheapest in state university, did 21 credit hours at a community college in one summer, did not have car payments or credit card payments and still needed fafsa loans. move to states like NY or CA at age 18. work at mcdonalds as an independent for 12 months and then file for state schools at age 19 /20. dont worry about graduating late. just finish your degree. at the lowest cost possible. Reason why i mentioned CA and NY is because in these states your state tuition is zero if you make less than 100k and you have the added brand name of these states. for example . City University of New York sounds better than Wabash College. California State University sounds better than Monteclair University

This. The reason we have useless degrees is because we have useless students. We have useless students because we decided everyone must go to college. College should be only for rich people and such members of the poor and middle classes who are sufficiently motivated to rise above their station. Those people all should receive classical educations in languages, literature, mathematics, the social and hard sciences, and the arts. Most people, whom we shall call The Great Unwashed, should become tradesmen or laborers, as befits their station in life. They do not need college - as we have seen it is wasted on them. They study either useless subjects like basket weaving, or idiotically narrow career oriented subjects like business or computer programming - areas far better suited to apprenticeships, not formal education.

My path is very unconventional but I couldn't afford to go to college straight out of high school (my single mom couldn't afford to save money and raise a family at the same time) and couldn't qualify for *any* loans. So I started working and saving up. By the time I was 20 I opened a small business. I actively looked for opportunities and found one. Mind you, I didn't make millions or even hundreds of thousands. But with hard work and patience here I am 5 years later with enough money to pay for college debt free. Now I'll be able to study what was always of interest to me and it's also useful. I'll still be working part time so I don't run out of all my money but in my opinion if there's a will, there's a way.

I started working after high school. My father had owned a roofing company, and I helped him in the summers growing up. So, I started working for contractors. Then, I decided to become an insurance adjuster and got my license and certifications. I can't tell you how many companies I interviewed with that were quite happy with my knowledge level and experience. However, all the major insurance companies said the same thing of "sorry, I'd love to hire you because you're more knowledgeable than most people I hire, but we have a company policy that requires a 4 year degree." So, I got a job at a smaller independent firm that didn't have stupid company policies and never looked back. So ya, the whole college degree thing is out of hand also from the hiring perspective. Why would an insurance adjuster need a degree? No reason at all. Just some people and companies lack common sense.

I’m 32 and I have a PhD in microbiology. The Australian government paid for my tuition fee as it did for all postgraduate degree in research. I did some casual teaching at uni for USD$30-$33 per hour which is not enough to survive due to low contact hour but I’m so grateful for the fact that I don’t have student debt. Thank you, Australia! Secondly it also depends on what business course you major in for example courses such as business administration and management are not job gurantees but it's more based on how you apply it and market yourself in the practical world whereas courses such as Economics, finance and accounting are more specialised degrees, hence they are more likely to be job gurantees. Lastly out of the top 10 richest people in the world, half of them have a business degree.

It's not just about useless degrees. Be prepared before you go to college. If you have a "C's get degrees" mentality, plan on partying when you can, have no set plan to pay tuition, and/or have absolutely no idea about what to do with your major, then you're wasting your time and money. I know so many people who got their degrees, then never did anything with them. Most of these people still have loans to pay off as well. Honestly, I wish high schools would stress this more.

I graduated from a two year technical school with electro-mechanical technology in 1980 debt free by working at night and going to school during that day. The courses were designed to provide a well rounded exposure to optics, mechanical, and electronic disciplines. Xerox helped develop the curriculum so that one person could work on their copy machines since they contained mechanical, electronic, and optical components. I worked for a well known defense contractor for 35 years and rose from a technician to a high level nondegreed engineer during that time. I published numerous papers and some won company awards. I retired at 57 with very little debt, a nice pension, respectable IRAs and five rental properties providing excellent additional income. I tell young adults to skip college and find a trade to avoid debt and listen to you and Robert Kiokoski (sp?).

Watching this as a liberal studies major, I dont regret it though. Success is doing what you want when you want. I am not in debt. I made sure whatever college career I entered with I would have a plan. The attitude where we call things useless can be detrimental. I feel we are all different with different interest and we should be free to make those choice. For example it's based on what you value. If you value money? Good for you! If you value travel? Good for you! If you value teaching good for you! Someone has to fill these occupations. Just make sure it's something YOU want to do.

Every single degree is useful and makes someone money, the problem is that some degrees are taken too often when not too many jobs are available. An example is BA, the market has become so saturated that now certain employers prefer: Operations, HR, supply chain, and certain tech majors if they are a tech company.

Useless is only a valid description of a major if education is a means to an end. If I want to understand how to address poverty in low-income communities, a master’s degree in material engineering is useless. If I want to sway a judge’s decision on a major legislative issue, a degree in astrophysics is useless. So what exactly is a useful degree? A university has traditionally been an institution associated with class. It is not until after industrialization that we started to perceive education as a means to an end? Again, so what is useless? A degree in advanced microbiology might make bank, but they’re nor precocious thinkers. In fact, a lot of voters hold degrees in STEM and are just as uninformed and ignorant as someone living below the poverty line. So.. useless for what?

Additionally, the economy today changes so quickly. There are many people who had degrees in fields that made millions in the 80s and 90s that don’t exist anymore. There are many of us now who work in fields that will not exist 10 years from now. The most useful thing you can have isn’t a degree in a “useful” field, but the ability to be flexible, pick up new skills quickly and never be so tied into one field that you can’t pivot as necessary.

One of my friends girlfriend graduated with a BA in Russian literature. She was complaining about how hard it was to find an engineering job (only jobs where we lived ) with a nontechnical degree. I had no words. I am an engineer and the gulf in understanding of what it entailed and how little she knew was jaw dropping. Worse yet, I suggested working for the intelligence community reading Russian intel. Except I found out she didn’t bother to learn Russian. She just studied the English translation.

No question there are a lot of questionable degree programs out there and prospective students should use projected data regarding career growth to determine if a program is worth the expense. However, with that said I think it is an easy cop out to just blame pieces of paper called degrees. I know plenty of people that went to school for these so called "useless" degrees and by every measure, finances included, they are highly successful. Conversely I know others that went for these same degrees that are working retail or some sort of job not related to their degree. I think the takeaway here is the ones that are successful worked a bit harder, sacrificed a little more, took more chances, and yes caught some luck to break their way. All degrees are not created equal. Some programs have enough job demand that if you satisfactorily complete the program and show a modest amount of work ethic you can walk into a financially rewarding career. Other careers have much more competition or just lack the demand so if you want to succeed you will have to work a bit harder and go through more blood, sweat, and tears than others.

I’d be careful what I call mundane. What one person values can be completely different to what another values. Creating meaning is unique to each and every person. Now what society values, and tries to implement meaning too is very different. But I feel every person going to college or at least most, know which degrees society rewards. Going against that shows your uniqueness, and doesn’t let outside forces pressure them into something they do not want to study or get into for the sake of a well paid job. Creativity and passion should take precedent in your decision, I think should be valued more. But too each his own I suppose.

I had a college professor who said that a college degree was like a badge of honor. Knowledge is a great thing, but it should have virtue in it's use. You should pick a college major that will be marketable as a career. I know a woman who got a degree in sociology only because she had heard that it would be easier than other majors. she had no particular interest in the subject. Ironically , she is now a high school guidance counselor advising teens on careers and other life choices. Not all students are college material because some are not particularly academically gifted. They can still do well via vocational or technical training at a jr. college. Pick something that is needed in the marketplace, that you have an interest in, that you have the capabilities for.

That being said, a good return on the investment in college is something that a student should at least be aware of. I graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in 1996 and it has been extremely lucrative. Other areas I would recommend to individuals are computer science and the medical fields, like med school or pharmacy. The degrees you want to avoid are the soft sciences like philosophy, sociology as well as the arts areas. Also, for those individuals that already have degrees and are considering MBAs, I would HIGHLY recommend you do your research. Diploma mills have churned out so many MBAs that the degree is now all but worthless except when it comes from a top five school like Harvard or Wharton.

Accounting can yield good dividends. It is a math based profession and the need for accounting of any sort will always be in need. I don't know much about the program at UCF, but one thing you can do is perform some searches on accounting jobs in the area you want to live in and determine what baselines they are setting for recent graduates. You can align some of the those requirements with the curriculum of the school you are considering. Hope that helps.

@@kingsloth4106 Let's examine your examples. First of, Descartes got a bachelor in Law, not in Philosophy. So it's pretty clear that he didn't obtain his knowledge in university. If he pursued Philosophy, it's because he was passionate about it. He got his knowledge by himself and by reading books written by other philosophers. And Einstein got a degree in mathematics and physics, which is a good degree. No they didn't achieve all these things by pursuing money, but by pursuing their passion. Descartes was passionate about Philosophy, but he wouldn't have been able to live of his passion in his early life. So he got a degree in field where he could make money and wrote about his Philosophy in his free time, before he got successful enough to live off of his passion. And if you are passionate about something worthy on the labor market like Einstein, then wonderful ! I don't advocate for pursuing millions in profit, just to be able to live comfortably and not being stuck as an underpaid waiter with 30 000 $ in student loan debt after getting a degree in film school. I always was passionate about history, but I knew I wouldn't be able to get a job with a degree in that field (especially in Russia), so I pursued another more lucrative passion: Programming. I fell in love with it, got a degree in Computer Science and now I live comfortably and still read books about history and watch podcasts in my free time.

Would it be beneficial for someone to have some kind of monetary stability before pursuing their academic goals? Absolutely. However, the guy in this video had a position that leaned more towards calling people’s pursuits in academia “useless” because it doesn’t have economic value, implying that degrees in academia only have value if you could possibly make money from it. That’s the position I’m trying to hone in on. Quick point of correction: While it is true that descartes got a degree in law, he was in academia studying logic, Aristotelian Philosophy, and mathematics (Geometry specifically) long before any of his settling into law.

For a marketing job, most job posts require have a preference for a degree in journalism, PR, business marketing, or communications. Public relations is a whole other career field different from marketing but a degree in communications, journalism - PR emphasis, and sometimes business marketing would work. Remember, marketing and PR are within the communication field so there’s a bit of flexibility within the degree choice. For event planning; I would consider a BA degree in communication and get some internship or volunteer experience ASAP whether that’s shadowing a wedding event planner, etc. For all these degrees, you need to network, attend events, internships, volunteer in community events, reach out to people within this field by email or slide in their DM’s, ask them questions, show interest in what they’re doing and who they are as people. This is true, I totally believe this because there are so many people I know who have advanced degrees but work in a different field then they originally intended. I got my accounting degree from Liberty University and had my pick of the litter right out of school. I think it depends on the major you choose more than anything, unless you're trying to work for an investment bank or a large law firm that picks from only a handful of schools. I'm not dumb and I had enough presence of mind to know that, coming from a smaller school, I had to find a degree that was not only sought after, but also matched the rigor and intensity of much more recognizable programs. In my eyes, if your goal is to live an upper-middle class lifestyle one day, you have Accounting/Management Information Systems, Engineering, or Computer Science to choose from. Any other avenue to the same place seems to involve sales in one form or another, accompanied by commission-based pay.

@@musaahmed2431 The reason why I didn't list those is I know several people who got degrees in Economics at great schools like UVA, but they couldn't find jobs in their field without going back for an advanced degree. Likewise, with finance, people who go to average to good schools aren't going into Wall Street firms or good consulting firms, they're either selling insurance or working long-term for Booz Allen. A lot of the people who I know that earned Finance degrees ended up in accounting roles, while not being able to get the "good" accounting roles that require the CPA license.

@@rp338 Yes, it can be done! My maternal grandfather was a cavalryman in WWI and became art director at an ad agency in Chicago, which was when I knew him. I remember him as a grumpy old guy who wouldn't let us watch TV cartoons on Sunday afternoons at his house because he wanted the Cubs games on, even though he was in the kitchen and not watching. My dad's family included Uncle Charles, an art teacher in New Jersey. He also did newspaper cartoons and things like that but living where he did, I didn't know him well.

Useless? Education economists have found that on average those who have earned a 4 year college degree live 8 years longer than the general public. All who have a degree can qualify to teach public school in some State as long as they received decent grades. Those with 2 to all 4 years of college can qualify somewhere (often in their own community) to substitute teach and never be at risk of being unemployed. Those who have selected a interdisciplinary degree or art history or philosophy or literature or political science or other wide cultural major can become college assistant professors of communications, if they can obtain a masters degree in communications with good grades. This is because they are needed nationally to supervise education majors learning to be comfortable and skilled at talking in front of the classroom. An undergraduate and graduate quantative measures for communications course must be passed. There is NO useless college degree. There are, however far too many uninformed college and communiy college students (and members of the public) who are unaware that one of the most important aspects of having completed at least 15 credits at one college is that this is the typical requirement to qualify for LIFETIME access to the student placement office, including job guidance, interviewing & resume training, and the jobs available list. There are some employers who list their job openings nowhere else--only at the local college(s). Statistically, every additional quarter or semester of community college, college, or university completed garners higher lifetime earnings. For those who take student loans, it is ESSENTIAL to buy an adequate lifetime supply of SEALED copies of their transcript(s) and protect those, if they get in danger of defaulting on their payments. In default, records are frozen, so the student can NEVER otherwise PROVE there education to prospective employers. 10 copies might or might not be an adequate supply. There are middle aged people who have had to work their entire adult lives from their high school diploma rather than their 3 years of college because they could not obtain a SEALED copy of their transcript(s). If a person finds they are at a long term dead end, check an almanac tables for how much the local State spends on public education; if you are in a State in the bottom 25% or 33%, consider moving to an area or State that regards education more highly. In the 2019 employment environment, there are so few unemployed business majors that it is becoming common for BANK TELLERS to be holders of one of those 'useless degrees'--because a general cultural education enables them to converse intelligently with the banking public. Because the USA has produced 100,000,000 births between 1995 & 2019 but only 33,000,000+ births between 1972 & 1995, the nation now needs at least 30 % of these yo become college educated adults, or the nation is going to have shortages in MANY professions as 72,000,000 Baby Boomers retire. That is one reason Baby Boomers are being encouraged to continue working until 70. The nation has s shortage of 24-49 year olds to replace them. BS/BA in education, social work, & accounting are urgently needed. Physician assistants are more urgently needed than BS nurses. Licensed clinical social workers are more needed than psychology graduates. And the nation requires MANY more dentists. Occupational Outlook Handbook is updated annually by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Getting a degree of choice is NOT the issue; one also HAS to take the effort on campus to learn what to DO with a degree!

I went back to school ( tech school ) to become an LMT ( licensed massage therapist) I make an awesome living met my fiancé in school whose now an ICU NURSE we just bought a house and we both drive new cars! All our bills are paid and have money in the bank ! BOOM!

No degree is useless, but you should be in the field of the degree you're getting, and you should not be going into substantial debt to get any degree. Degrees are products of the university to entice people into staying in school. Some degrees focus on the essentials (philosophy, writing, science, math, law, theology, business, history), others are academic, hyper-intellectualizations of specific areas of study ("Pop Culture", women's studies, male studies, games,etc). None are useless. All (depending on the quality of the school and its curriculum) rely on the essentials to build the studies into the academic, hyper-intellectualization degrees. The uselessness is on what we spend our money. Be sure our money is spent wisely.

There are definitely useless degrees. If you cannot guarantee a job or the pay is low then that’s useless. Degrees are simply keys, they open up pathways for jobs for the future.

You can take courses in gender studies, or arts, ect. But paying that money for a degree is the peak if stupidity. Yes, some degrees are useless - but the courses is fine to take if you are interested.

@@zachb1706 I disagree. What is useless is a student not learning the essentials that universities should teach. Don't we all know someone whom went to college, graduated, but doesn't seem to know simple things? What's deceptive and devious is it can be, as if, the school pushed the student through, graduated them, just so the school could get paid; what's horrendously stupid is the student, by any means necessary, pays the school with money the student doesn't have and with no plan or purpose. What hurts the school and should be reported to incoming freshman and their parents is when schools are inefficient with the execution or organization of essential curriculum. What hurts society is the school having a "rate of graduation" they're eyeballing to ensure their school's marketability instead of ensuring the quality of the student graduating. A degree is centered on reading and writing. To quote Good Will Hunting: "You just spent 150 grand on an education you could have gotten for $1.50 in late fees at the public library." The information is available. School can be bypassed. The value of an educational institution is the gauntlet of criticism! and society's perspective of it; education, as an institution, is so because of society's perspective. I would be up for a challenge: name a degree you think is useless, show me the school from which the degree is granted; I will argue that the degree is not useless, adding points reflecting it's curriculum, it's respective industry and will, to the contrary, argue how the degree might disserve the grantee. P.S. If you have a degree I will hold you to the highest criticism; if not, call me a name: edit your comment - "peak of stupidity" not "peak IF stupidity".

claytonbill university’s aren’t essential, they are higher education that extend beyond what is essential for life, for finding a job and being a successful person in society. K-12 is when you learn your essentials. Sure, gender studies might have some benefit (although I have yet to find one), getting a *degree* in it is completely useless. The main purpose of higher education is to prepare you and give you the skills for jobs in later life - nothing else. Gender studies provides so little job openings and the pay is so low that it’s completely useless to the majority of people who get it.

If I were, I would disagree and argue: for a society to uplift itself from a destructive, indentured or enslaved path, universities are essential. I haven't done the research, but would be curious to know the state of modern nations compared with one another: number of or access to universities - low vs high - how each rank by wealth at the pleb level, the rate of middle class against other classes of the respective nation, and the GDP rate weighted with the nation's population. I value such metrics and would consider it in my agreement against the "useless" degree position; though I admit, a counter argument could be made. Thoughts? If what you are inferring as "[university's] aren't essential" is to say you and I can (and our ancestors have) work the land, build shelter, hunt for food, and (in a permitted society) enjoy our hobbies, I would agree 100% - universities are not essential...for us to survive; I must add the propositional piece to the argument; without it would be disagreeable. Having had some great teachers, some terrible teachers, some whom thought they were great and appeared to be great but really were just pompous, some who were there to get paid and go home, and others whom cared enough to drive the conversation but were not great, I would have to disagree; the education one receives with the intent of acquiring a degree is never "useless" until the student has exhibited lack of diligence or discipline to study the material. It is the student's responsibility to own the hours of study and understand the depth and value every course leading to any degree has. Can we be clearer by defining the term "useless"? My interpretation of your comments is: you are arguing against the utilitarian purpose of the information provided in the "useless" degree, and against the "useless" degree's applicability to a job (especially a better paying one). Case in point, Gender Studies incorporates literature, history, business, pedagogy, psychology, philosophy (and can include other courses of study). Are these "useless" forms of study? I would label literature, history, business, pedagogy, psychology, philosophy essential and utilitarian fields of study; I mean to say (and will not argue i this discussion), these fields of study are useful. That Gender Studies relies on useful fields of study, Gender Studies cannot be "useless". What about money? Money Money Money. I've met an executive from a computer company whom had a degree in philosophy - six (6) figures plus bonuses and investments leading him to become a cash millionaire. Michael Burry was a physician but went into finance - billionaire. I know business owners whom take classes to get the information but never get a degree; they learn what they want, when they want, they're excited about it and don't bother with the "useless" degree in mathematics or computer science or finance; they have discipline to read and apply what they read to their business and they make money - millionaires. This would be no different than a person getting a degree in history and becoming a game warden for the Department of Parks and Wildlife, or getting a degree in chemistry and becoming a truck driver - both examples I've encountered. The point here is, indeed, sir, I would agree with your argument: a degree should transform into a job relevant to the study. Though we luckily do not live in a country that restricts such freedoms to chose one's direction; we must direct ourselves and own the consequences - debt, no after-school job plan, unhappiness with our coffees. This is where our argument should really lead: should we exercise debt to get what we want, or what we think we need; should we flip flop our goals because our mood changes; should we have no plan when using our time toward a goal with no back stop? I can assert, any degree "will do" for many positions...within a company. I'm certain from your comments you know (as I know) any level of education - no matter how low or high - can give the person the tools to build their wealth with their own company. Wanna get wealthy? Conceptualize, build, market, refine. No school required. Just know: had you gone (not you personally, just the proverbial "you"), you might have learned something you would not have learned without having made the mistakes yourself. It's like a boot camp - instead of the screaming, you should be criticised to the fullest extent. One your other point: I would agree K-12 SHOULD be where essentials are taught, but I would disagree that they are taught well enough to say its absolutely true; essentials are learned by a student, not taught by any institution; I would say the difference is important to my argument of degrees being "useless".

What is most concerning is that these sorts of discussions about "meaningless" degrees never mention the hundreds of thousands of folks who pursued the degrees that everyone believe have more profitability and job demand. There are engineers, architects, lawyers, etc...who are too faced with the US job market not being as advertised when they were initially sold on the go-to-college plan. I have family members who pursued STEM degrees and were at the top of their class and did everything right from internships to applying early for jobs and they still ended up in the same unemployment line as the lesser "sensible" degrees. No one talks about this because to address this means that there are no guarantees with a college degree no matter what you major in and where you go to school...and most importantly...we need to get rid of the US college and university system all together. Its doing so little good for anybody. You tell this generation...well you should have went to a cheaper school...for a law degree? for an MBA? What about the jobs that look at your resume to see what school you attended even if you majored in these STEM jobs. Not going to an institution with a decent reputation sometimes leads to you losing competitive points over other candidates who went Ivy League while you went to your local no name college. No one talks about that. Its just more of the same hate for the millennial generation where we tell them that they were stupid for listening to the General X'ers and Baby Boomers who instilled this nonsense of going after top tier schools for top tier degrees to land top tier jobs lie that they secretly profit from. ITs all a mess.

I have to get my master's degree in order to be a therapist. Some degrees dont have a clear path, but if you understand what you need to know in order to have the desired career it's not a waste. I would say have some idea of what you want to do before you go to college dont just go to college to figure it out. It's okay to take a break or volunteer to find your passions if you're not in it for the salary lol.
