I love your videos so much, Nate. The logical flow and breaking down the beats into their component parts is very helpful in a "teach a man to fish" way, so we can begin analyzing other rhythms. Thank you

Dave was one of the first clinics I saw in the late 80's still amazing. If you want to dive into clave and amazing Cuban drummers as Dave did- He sought out Changuito of Los Van Van for lessons too. Look up Changuito, Horacio El Negro, Ruy Lopez Nussa, Rodney Barreto, Ignacio, Samuel Formell... you'll enjoy. When I studied in cuba for a short trip i was schooled very quickly on the feel! Still haven't seen anything like the Cuban drummers!

Another great lesson. The fantastic tuning of Dave's drums new heads and what the drums sound like apparently in this auditorium greatly enhance the video so when doing a comparison I think its important to be aware of that. Your environment and who you may be performing with play a huge role in the way you perform. I think you would do just fine side by side.

Beautiful double stroke rolls. So smooth, so fast. Just sweet. Been working on them myself and even at half your speed, I find it really difficult. Thx for a really interesting lesson.

0:34 LOL, that's ironic considering I recall a Weckl interview when he mentioned practicing when he was younger and occasionally getting angry and throwing sticks at the wall

Nate, do you want to sound more like Dave when your playing his style licks? Something I figured out a looong time ago is to use really light sticks, like 7A's. Dave uses super small light sticks and it has a big effect on his sound and style and when I went thru my phase of copying everything he did, I found going to 7A's really made a huge difference...Try it!

Some of these parts remind me of Rock and roll by led Zeppelin. Would that be considered a clave?

You mean when I’m finished playing? Probably an old habit from classical percussion. Certainly not necessary when you’re doing this exercise.
