Yeah, pretty mind blowing stuff! Sometimes I can't wrap my head around what the hell he's doing. The thing is, he knows every measure of so many complex tunes like the back of his hand. It's one of those things where a drummer watches, and shortly into the song, you are completely lost. Then, you just sit back and watch the rest in ahh. Like, WTF?!? 😂

I have been playing for 50 years now and I studied drums, I read drum music fairly well, but I got to tell you, Dave is "thee" grandmaster of the instrument! There are tons of great drummers all over the globe, but drummers like Weckl show up once in a lifetime. The notes are flawlessly and uninhibitedly flowing from his limbs into the drums, just like morning-dew dripping off a windshield at the dawn of day. This man is VERY talented!

I agree 100%. I’ve been playing for 40 years and sometimes get disappointed because I can’t play like Dave Weckl.
@cmtcfu
@cmtcfu 3 жыл бұрын
@@em65 - understandable ... however, i can, and have, been able to play at his level for over 15 years now ... and i honestly ran into limits having so intentionally focused on playing like weckl since age 10 ... i have since intentionally unlearned some of his stylistic decisions ... in favor of more benny greb-like decisions, or more calvin rodgers-like decisions ... depending on the music ... weckl is amazing, but he's not the be-all-end-all ... and he would agree ... if i had to pick one drummer to fit into that category, it would be virgil donati
@matsrekdal3065
@matsrekdal3065 3 жыл бұрын
@@cmtcfu I can see how you experienced limits, playing like Weckl. You're not Dave Weckl. 🙂 Nobody is, and therefore nobody should try to play like him. Just like nobody should try to play like Greb, or Donati. Play like yourself, everyone else is taken. Most imortantly: drumming, and music, is not a competition. 😊

@cmtcfu
@cmtcfu 3 жыл бұрын
@@matsrekdal3065 - not the issue. you are comparing the idea of learning fundamental, high-level techniques and their subsequent creative execution, that are agreed upon by literally everyone as being an effective means of playing, to individual stylistic decisions. similarly to how a house is built, there are rules that apply if you're going to build a proper foundation. it is not relative in nature. this is not about individual style versus emulating someone else. my individual take is a given, and is always in place. this is about learning the components of the best players in the world, and assimilating certain aspects of their playing into your repertoire. within that, i'm specifically referring to dave's approach from a creative decision-making standpoint, and its application. i used to think that it could be applied to any style. and i think that's a safe statement. it can be. and while it may be safe, it's not necessarily the best. that's what i'm after. that's why i changed my approach.

Just unbelievably good. Words don't describe the tightness, the fluidity, the absolute exactness, while still maintaining a feel and an impression of improvisation while all the while knowing that this is all very calculated. Amazing. I've always considered Weckl a favorite even though I don't even know a fraction of the catalog of music he's played on and I don't even listen to Jazz. Every time I watch him play, I'm reminded why I like his playing and style. And the memory to play all these bits with such perfection. There must be an award for someone like this!
