If we eat our carnivore OMAD meal in the morning around 8am and then fast until the next morning when we do glucose and ketone testing around 5:30 am( have not done triglyceride testing yet), would you expect the triglycerides to go down after 22 hours fasting? It it the hours more than 12-14 hours fasting, or the time of the day you test?

Request related to this topic: could you acquire a few days of triglycerides versus time at 10-24 hours fasted at 1 hour increments? The overlap with intermittent fasting and the relevance to lab timing would make this very interesting, IMO.

Hi Dave, I think Dave Asprey, maybe at end of High Intensity Health interview with Mike, said coffee increases ketones significantly and was thinking maybe related to triglicerides. On the question if you could only bring one [supplement?] to desert island...

I fasted 19.5 hours before a recent blood test and my triglycerides were 190. All my markers are fine besides that. No idea what to do at this point. I was zero carb up to that point for 4 solid months with absolutely NO cheating whatsoever. I did have an intense workout the day before, so dunno. Concerned, I have 2 young boys :(

Trigs are very noisy as they say many ties, and will go up if you're fasted for too long (past 16 hrs). My trigs were 800+ after fasting for 13ish hours if it makes you feel better. besides super high LDL as well, everything else was fine by keto standards, so not sweating it too much... but gonna retest soon. Pull out the coffee.

@@islaadele1212 I stopped checking lipids awhile ago but they were never that high again but often above 140 if keto or carnivore. I don't stress it really, and was always able to get them lower easily with the introduction of some carbs or taking flush niacin. to my knowledge there isn't evidence of a causal relationship between high trigs and atherosclerosis. I got a CAC scan and it was 0.

Please please talk about how to lower triglycerides !!! Mine are 321. I can’t find any info on what to do. Should I fast ? What if it’s hereditary? Can I lower it naturally even if it’s hereditary?

Hi Dave, I don't know if I should be concerned with my cardio check results.🤔 I ve been doing carnivore (95%) for the past 3 months and I have been checking my glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides for the past couple of days. I usually do it while at least 10h fasted and for the past 3 days my triglycerides are coming up as too low to measure, my cholesterol is about 7.3-7.8 mmol/L and my glucose is usually around 5.4 mmol/L. My cardio check just measures total cholesterol.

Dave, newbie here. My question is why don’t we want to count the triglycerides at their highest? If they even spike for a few hours doesn’t the body feel the effect of the rise during those hours? To me (common sense wise) it would be like cleaning the house before the maid comes. You are looking a numbers which may be low but not truly what your body deals with on a daily bases. Just trying to understand why we are waiting for our system to clean up before we look.

I tend to agree with you, Mary and the same thing for glucose levels. I think Dave is more focused on showing how labile these values can be and therefore are not necessarily the best way to determine morbidity. Things like CAC and inflammation levels might be a more accurate assessment of affects of these short but intense waves in glucose/triglycerides. .

Dave, I love listening to your experiments. I only understand about 1/4 of what you are telling us, but Im catching on. In regards to coffee, please confirm the conversation is talking about caffeinated and not decaf. Took me a month to come off regular coffee, but did it using decaf. I need something to put my HWC in! There seems to be sooo many variables in understanding ones lipid panel. Doctors are only looking at the numbers they have been trained to look at. What doctors can we visit that will understand the lipid panel results, that high tri's are not all bad, and that LDL's have pattern A & B, etc. They just want to put you on statins based on the original test. I am VERY tempted to just stop Rosuvastatin, but admit to being a bit scared.

About how many GRAMS of protein is your carnivore diet providing. Both Lewis & Clark and Richard Henry Dana Jr ("Two Years Before the Mast") commented of just how much healthier they were and how much more work they could do on a carnivore diet. I think it was Dana that said they ate up to 7 pounds of lean beef a day. I think they got it on the cheep because they were raising the cows mainly for hides not fattening them for market. I'm guessing they ate a LOT of bone broth as well during their time in California shipping hides back to the east coast.

I second the occasional "tiredness" after a meal. Really strange because it only occurs !Sometimes!, most of the time there's hardly any difference in energy level. If anybody can figure it out you will. I'm carnivore now several months after keto for a couple years. I gathered all the great benefits of keto but somehow I tried carnivore and was incredibly delighted with the results. My hunger reduced even further, I lost the last 10 pounds that hung on even with keto (male 63 6'0", now 195, I'm very lean I do yoga and full body calisthenics. ... loving it.. was recently called a "yum yum" by much younger pretty lady! -- I think that's a good thing; ) But I have been concerned about the occasional energy drop only after certain meals. I've recently increased potassium and magnesium uptake and so far seems to help but I not convinced. Please do a whole video on what you discover about post eating occasional energy drops! Thanks, you are the cutting edge!!!! (Like a great steak knife)

I notice a drop in energy most if I stuff myself too much, and especially if it involves a lot of pork or chicken fat. Could be the high levels of omega 6 in those fats?

We will never get a low trig test then if we normally do not eat after 2 or 3 pm unless we have our own tester and can get up that early but testing close to getting up they are usually elevated(??) I don't eat at night because of GERD at night. I go to bed at 9.30 pm and because I wake up a lot I dont get up till 7.30 am (10hrs in bed to get 6 hrs of sleep)

If blood glucose wasn’t tested and tracked at the same time the triglycerides were tracked, one can’t convincingly say it’s not Dawn Phenomenon.
@wardenclyffe207

Isn't it simply that high triglycerides is only bad when you are eating a lot of carbohydrates? Carbohydrates (glucose) can damage the lipids so a lot of fat with a lot of carbohydrates is likely a bad combination.

It seems cafestol not caffeine is the culprit in coffee causing high cholesterol levels. Cafestol can be greatly reduced by paper filtration. Any other filter does not work. Even decaf if not paper filtered will not eliminate Cafestol.

appreciate the human guinea pig aspect and just subscribed. Less enthralled with the all over the place nature of the podcast and lack of wrapping up conclusions and meaning of high triglyceride 15 hrs./day on a low fat carnivore diet. Also unclear whether sleep itself has anything to do, although it seems not. alo, perhaps--unsure as newbie--some rationalization and self-justification creeping into discussion, which imo should focus on health re these high readings, and also ways to lower, if unhealthy.

Really interesting information re coffee and triglycerides. I seem to always have high trig levels. I have recently found out re DNA that I have a gene that means I process caffeine slower. I wonder if that is relevant to trigs. I did have a drop in triglycerides when reducing the amount of coffee I had previously but had put that down to less dairy not the actual caffeine. Thanks for you continued work to solve all these questions.

@@michaelsmith1262 I mainly have my coffee when out or from the machine (with group head etc) at home because I am trying to give it up for good. At the time my trigs were really high I was using a French press mostly. I like the theory about trigs and inflammation and immune response that Siobhan floated. I will have to check if at that time I still had high WBC and neutrophils re my Autoimmune disease.

Regarding the coffee raising cholesterol , this is a well known issue caused by the substance in the Cafestol , this can be reduced up to 95% if you drink paper filtered coffee instead of French press / Boiled, the particles get stuck in the paper filter. This is still not 100% proven for the people who are sensitive to coffee, they still can have raised cholesterol even with the paper filter. More info in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/maiTo6egg616iqM . and don't get crazy it is a vegan channel lol I am after the science.
