Gosh, Dave, hope you are ok after your tumble. Thank you for all the trouble you went to to take us on your walk. Above and beyond, I'd say, going back the next day to do the bits you couldn't do with Logan, bless him.

Thanks. Yes I am fine. Luckily the fall was "in slow motion" so I could take appropriate defensive action (sort of!).

10/10 for effort Dave! You showed much determination, I am pretty sure by the 2nd no dog sign I'd have been off home in a huff!! Hope the aches and pains were not too long lasting, thanks for another great video :-)

Thank you Mark. I must admit that after the second sign (to The Cuckoo Stone), I did think about making an instant "short cut" to the Stonehenge Inn at Durrington!

beautiful walk around Wiltshire, magnificent wonder Stonehenge, imagine the stories of the past those stones could tell; disappointing of National Trust to not allow dogs in some areas of the trail

It is a shame that the fields cannot just be "Dogs on lead" but I guess the landowners have had a few problems there in the past.

@@DaveFord Agree. Probably some unreasonable dog owners ruined it ! I walked without Alfie last Sunday ( he was having none of it !) felt totally wrong, didn’t know what to do with my hands 🤷♀️! 🐾

Hi Dave, I've done this walk and similar in the area but without a dog so much easier. One thing you, and others, might be interested in is the "Nile Clumps" planted on Horatio Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar, which are just to the east of King Barrow Ridge (the bridlepath you were walking with Logan) and north of the A303. It's a collection of small plantations/clumps of trees from about 1805, laid out based on where the ships were positioned at Nelson's victory at the Battle of the Nile. Originally there were 26 clumps, which spread South across the A303 as well, but now only 17 exist. If you visit Stonehenge and are perplexed about why ancient people built all these banks and henges and walls and cursus, it's rather like why somebody in the 19C planted a bunch of trees to commemorate a famous battle. Utter madness in some ways, but people do crazy things given enough time and resources. Maybe it's something in the water in this area?
@DaveFord2 күн бұрын
Thank you for the information about the "Nile Clumps". When you look at the landscape around there today (I realize that it may have been different, with more trees etc, many centuries ago), it does make you wonder what was so special about the area as it is so open, so relatively flat and really there is not much protection from the elements. I would love to be able to go back in time just to ask the question "Err, why are you building that, folks?"!
@jeanblemings53522 күн бұрын
It seemed the gods were not entirely on your side for this walk! A fascinating area though. I have visited Stonehenge a couple of times and always like to approach it on foot from the visitor centre though there is a bus shuttle service. Lots of barrows and earthworks all about so it must have been - and still is - a very special place. Loved the shot with Logan and his shadow!
@DaveFord2 күн бұрын
Yes, the walk presented some challenges for us! An amazing place though and indeed it appears to have had much meaning for folk over many, many centuries.

We know Woodhenge quite well, living not too many miles away in Ludgershall . When we were English Heritage members, we visited Stonehenge on several occasions. I remember lying on my stomach waiting for the sun to go down behind the stones with my camera at the ready. If you go into the centre (entrance), there is a great deal of information and demonstrations to look at.
@DaveFord2 күн бұрын
I shall have to go back and pay a visit to the centre - it sounds very interesting.

Nice video Dave but I'll add a bit of local knowledge, woodhenge becomes a dogging site after dark and us locals don't visit Stonehenge, it's a rip off, Avebury is a much better destination and better dog walk.

@DaveFord park at the "unhenged" coffee shop car park on the bend by the cricket club, pay at the bar. It's much cheaper than the main car park and serves a good selection of cake and coffee.

They do say that an artist must suffer for his art and you certainly seemed to by taking that tumble. I suppose that if you were able to return the next day nothing major was damaged apart from your pride. I probably haven’t been in that area since some point in the 1970s. As a child in the 1960s we would stop en route to Devon or Cornwall and have a family picnic amongst the stones.

Yes, I remember as a nipper, visiting Stonehenge .... and I even had a photo of me sitting on one of the stones!
